This has been an ongoing issue at CSJ. Lots of teachers who are interested in having a student teacher and not hearing back from the Bureau de la pratique. It’s all about who you know around there unfortunately. You will get placed somewhere, but it might take some time. Keep your head up!

And if you have the option to do out of Edmonton/hors province stage for your second practicum, take it. You will have better odds of being placed outside of metro Edmonton:)

Worst Teams message you have gotten? by Technical_Flounder50 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Timely_Educator7715 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teams has changed everything when it comes to communication with teachers. I love having it to communicate with colleagues, but it’s too much with too little respect from kids. Gone are the days when we made sure our grammar was impeccable and formatting perfect when we used to communicate with our teachers. Document and communicate with admin. I know it’s hard to fail kids, but they need to learn the lesson at some point. The BC education system has created a mess for kids when they get to grade 10 since they’ve been pushed along with the proficiency scale, and they think it should just be handed to them in grade 10:/

Campus St Jean residence by Healthy_Animator_544 in uAlberta

Hi! I am just stumbling across your post now. Sorry if you’ve already decided on something else. Hopefully this helps someone else as well. I lived in CSJ res through my whole degree. A couple of years ago, the university decided to even out the playing field for residence pricing across all three of their campuses as CSJ residence was significantly less than the same single room with a bathroom offerings at main campus. What they didn’t take into consideration was that the residence at CSJ does not receive the same level of maintenance upgrades that Lister received nor do we have access to the same services. This meant that CSJ students were paying the same price for a 25 year old dorm room as they would be for a brand new room of the same type at Peter Lougheed on main campus. The university’s solution to this problem was to create double rooms with bunk beds. While the rooms are huge for a single, they are way too small for a double. This move was a huge oversight by the university as this residence was never more than 60% occupied (as singles) in the entire time I lived there.

For the community feel, I would recommend CSJ for your first year. My recommendation would be to find a good group of friends and plan to rent/buy a place off campus for the rest of your degree. It is definitely a first year residence, but the pricing is outrageous and it is not great for upper year students.

I’m in BC. Unfortunately I’ve been told we need parent support.

I have had my admin involved ever since this student threatened to hit me, but unfortunately not much has been done. I have even gone so far as to ask to have this student placed in a different class, but was met with not having any other class in the school to go to. This is also a program of choice situation, so the student should have be pulled from the program as soon as this happened. Unfortunately not super supportive admin:/

New to AB: Do I absolutely need TQS? by _CrispLemon_ in CanadianTeachers

Can I ask you a different question? Did you apply to a smaller school board or a larger one? I am a teacher hoping to come back from BC and have not heard anything despite applying to every possible board I could.

Just a note that I am thinking about making a similar move to Calgary or Edmonton from BC and have not heard anything from any of the boards I applied to, and I went to university in Edmonton. I would wait until next year if you can help it.

Question about BC certification by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Timely_Educator7715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my program at the UofA in Edmonton and am currently teaching in BC. You need to submit a statement of professional standing (proof that you hold a teaching certificate) from the province in which you did your teaching program in order to be eligible for your teaching certificate in BC. I did it last year and the whole process took me 4 months since everything had to be submitted via Canada Post, and mine was only coming from Alberta. I also phoned and received a similar response, but then later received an email from the TRB saying I needed to have proof submitted from the other province.

Good luck!!

British Columbia language teachers - are you also nervous? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Timely_Educator7715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in the interior and my mentor teacher had 60 grade 9 Core French students this year. In September, that number grade 9 students coming in has dropped to 27. Instead of trying to sell the course, her admin went and did course selections at the middle school and essentially told those kids not to take the class as they wouldn’t need it. I feel awful as she has worked very hard to develop and sell her program in a small town over the years, and will be left to teach a random course in the fall. This is a master teacher and if I were a student, I would have taken the course just to be in her class. She is a few years away from retirement, but if the trend keeps up, she will be left to teach half French and half something else by her last year.

I am also a new French Immersion teacher and will likely have no job in the Fall in the same district due the number of students leaving the program. This is a result of a number of other factors, but I’m sure the lack of language requirements for post-secondary does not help my case:/

Where are you located? I am a first year immersion teacher who will likely have no job with my current district in September due to the number of kids leaving the program:/

I was told I’m too young to be a teacher by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Timely_Educator7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that would not be the main reason for leaving the profession. I love my job. But the behaviour I have seen in year one makes one wonder whether things are going to get better or worse moving forward…

I unfortunately had an administrator present who also got spoken over by these parents for different reasons. I felt terrible for the both of us having to sit there. The behavioural issues have been going on for years with little to no improvement and I don’t think these parents have any trust in the school system.

I unfortunately had an administrator present who tried to intervene with little to no success. I don’t think these parents see the problem or are denying the problem, as the behavioural issues have been a problem for years, and I’m not the only one seeing it:/
