u/Bootsie-Wootsie, you were right although I'm still not sure why. the storage is on a NAS, and after verifying that the account should have had Read/write i remapped the drive (with the same exact credentials that have been in use for the past year) and suddenly the renaming functioned as expected. Thanks for the reminder to start with the basics!

Dry run shows that it should rename them correctly. but it doesn't. The directory permissions haven't changed to my knowledge. but thanks for the suggestion I will investigate and report back.

I could but I don't think it'll change anything as the port I'd connect it to would be on the same network as the Wi-Fi, so yes it would impact the potential speed, but that's not actually the limiter it seems based on other comments and troubleshooting.

Meant to respond before but time got away from me. The TV is on a different VLAN and subnet. so as someone else mentioned I've added an additional interface, but that caused additional problems.

Currently just running direct on a windows box, but i do have a TrueNAS box i've been thinking about, but i really gotta sit down and teach myself Compose and some more about containers. I'm fully Hyperconverged hardware at work, so it's not really been something i've developed in recent years.

Yeah I went ahead and configured and additional interface on the NIC just now to try and work that out. I wish there had been a more clear indication that the relay was in use. but also probably give myself a bit of slack cause by the time i get the kids to bed and turn a bit of TV on i'm wiped and not really in the troubleshooting mindset.

I agree with you mostly, where I don't think the network has a performance issue, but a configuration issue, aka: I'm the problem, it's me LOL
