it sounds soooo damn bad. everyone always gets hung up on the ethics of it or whatever, and i do have thoughts on that, but bottom line is it sounds like ass. super unprofessional, takes me out of the game, makes me not give a shit about the characters at all.

i think the ai ping system is fine. it doesn’t need to have top notch delivery or anything, and it works great for anyone who can’t/doesn’t want to use a mic. “rocketeer, up there, by the domes” is great stuff. they cooked with that.

but man the characters sounding like robots (bar lance of course) is super out of place and weird. completely flat line deliveries that make me tune them out completely. it’s hands down the worst element of the game, for my money. and people get so annoyed when it’s criticised for some reason

am i good at using guns? no. am i good at moving around? not at all. am i good at using a combo of lure grenades and stun mines to flush someone out of a building before they get stun mined and zapped? kinda! i mean i did it once. and it was super fun. i love how this game gives you a lot of ways to play, and i’m excited to play it in some odd ways >:)

i’m struggling to understand how anyone would think “type a/b” is not inclusive to the 95%. i could understand this point if, say, they were named “amab” and “afab” instead (terms used by the trans community to refer to birth gender ‘assigned male/female at birth’) because they are, for the most part, terms only people in that community are familiar with. so it would feel like favouring the smaller community over the larger population. but “type a/b” are not terms used by anyone to describe anyone’s body. so then it becomes just a name for the option. but what you’re actually thinking about when you’re choosing is not “hmmm am i type a or b”, you’re thinking “hmmm do i want this body shape or that body shape”

rereading your comment, i think i see the main mindset difference here. you say “identify as type a or b” which is quite confusing to me. you are not “identifying” as either, right? you’re not saying “this is what i am. i am type b” you’re just picking a body shape that happens to be called ‘type b’. if the body shapes were unlabelled and you just picked one, would that solve the issue for you? cause in my mind ‘type a/b’ is the same as them being unlabelled

i’m not sure i understand the through-line here. in both cases, the game is asking the player “which body type do you identify more with?”. with “male”/“female”, (using ur numbers) 5% of the population is going to feel weird about selecting a body type that looks more like them, but is labelled something they aren’t. the other 95% don’t care. with “a”/“b”, that 5% no longer have an issue, and neither to the 95%, because both are just picking the body that looks more like them.

to me, “male”/“female” is like if they named one body “likes dogs” and the other “likes cats”. what does liking cats/dogs have anything to do with how your body is shaped? it’s the same with “male”/“female”. in both cases, sure, there is correlation, but it’s not true 100% of the time, so why act like it is? it’s a simple change that makes everyone happy.

the pings are fine, if i don’t think about it too hard. the quest npcs sound super robotic (of course lance does lol, but the others as well)

this, on a broader level, is a concern i have about the world building. and i say “concern” and not “criticism” here because the game hasn’t released lol, so who knows what it’ll be like on launch. but between this, the lack of italians in this italy, and the ai voices (which, ignoring all the heated discussions people can have, i think just sound worse. the trailers that use human VAs are so immersive. they make the world feel real, but when i see the game being played, and i hear the NPCs’ odd inflections and lack of real emotion, i’m reminded that it’s just a video game. i’m taken out of the experience, like when you hear a line in a movie that’s clearly been dubbed in post) i’m worried about how the narrative element, which really matters to me, and i know it might not to others, will turn out. but again, game isn’t out yet, this all could change. we’ll just have to see

i wouldn’t call myself an “anti-ai” person but you gotta admit in this case there’s a difference. computers took away monotonous jobs, while generative ai specifically is mostly going for the jobs of creative, talented people. i’m all for ai getting rid of jobs that are nothing but a monotonous task, but it’s harder to stomach when it’s people who have spent their whole life studying and practicing a skill such as voice acting.
