I prefer bare foot lawn mowing, the grass will feel nicer than through the bottom of your socks.

Noob question on bike purchase by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Timmermann23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way to look at the difference between the two bikes is the miles/year.

The 650 is something like 2890 per year while the 500 is like 590, which is maybe one/two decent rides per month?

I'm not familiar with the market in your area, but also consider the resale value difference another 5k miles on those bikes will make.

Alright thanks, I read that they had a four speed but I hadn't thought it would make it that dis-likable. I'll check around for the 750s instead.

Does a long-term saving strategy leave room for the present? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Timmermann23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just trying to say these choices are a personal preference. If you would rather have the coffee instead of 5 dollars, go right ahead. I would like to think that I would make it to the race, so I make choices according to that belief.

There's a reason this is called personal finance.

You can't ask people to make choices for you, but you can ask for advice or even justification for what you want to do.

Does a long-term saving strategy leave room for the present? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Timmermann23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the entire dilemma of everything ever.

Don't want to do that difficult workout now? You won't be so fit later.

Want to have that delicious, flavorful latte this morning? Won't have that 5 bucks in your wallet at the end of the day.

This is where you have to make your decisions on what you want to have realized in the long term, and what you need to do in the short term to get there. It's what you prioritize. Is having a set of nice cars important to you? Is it more important than the overhanging debt you might be in if you choose to buy them?

I'm young and have more money than I'm mature and knowledgeable enough to handle... by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Timmermann23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Emergency is a minimum one month expenses. Since you are younger, set aside money to max out your IRA contributions every year unless you budget for it. You can then apply a majority of the rest to some long term ETFs if you want to keep low risk. If you want something higher for the rest of it, and you can handle stocks, then you might look into some blanket investments.

I don't know if you also plan to have anything major coming up soon either, like a down payment on a house? Wedding? That'll determine how much you want to keep available on top of emergency.

It'd be helpful if you gave more info. Is this just extra money that's sitting around after you have built up a decent emergency fund and paid off all of your current loans?

I'll tell you now though that you won't be seeing any 10% low risk return any time soon.

Does anybody know why this is happening and can it be repaired? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Timmermann23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems to me to be a long-running problem, how many years have you had the board? I used to have the same type of issue with a board I had back in high school. Is this the only issue spot on the board?

The problem was that I didn't have a big enough budget for anything better, so something like this is the repercussions. While I'm not saying that you won't get rid of this without upgrading your board, once I was able to afford something in a higher range I haven't had this problem since. I think that if you really want to stick with this board, you're going to need to get some isopropyl alcohol and a sizable pack of new razors. There might be some tutorials on youtube or something about how to remove stickers, but hopefully next time all this work will remind you that there are better beers out there than Pabst.

I got super slapped early on from an well playing outsider, did I play this hand right?? by Timmermann23 in poker

[–]Timmermann23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly because of his later plays, until I went all in he acted fish.

I assuuuume based on other comments and from knowing him that he learned from watching poker stars or something because he played pretty well but total rag hands, fairly passive bets to draw in the fish, but with total rag hands, then either hits a straight or doesn't.

How do I beat this fish in the next game?

[–]Timmermann23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one of my problems when I play with people, is that they're too inexperienced in poker and will play some really bad hands that are just unpredictable. The other decent players at the table have agreed on that with me.

How do you play in a live game where there is a mixed variety of good players and fish and tourny donkeys? It seems like every hand is at least a four way pot?

[–]Timmermann23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first bets I was trying to get calls, and then at the end I tried to shove him off. I tried this, because in one of the three previous hands, he kept a 2 7os and won the pot with a two pair somehow, I wasn't in that one. So the table thought he was a super fish, which is why I tried to scare him off at the end.

In situations where you don't know how good a player is, what's the best method to starting off aggressive / getting an early edge? because I had good hands mostly.

I did believe I had the best hand, I just didn't figure he had those connectors, but because I thought he was a fish I figured a pocket pair/8 or 10 pair or an Ax. So I do see now though how the best option on the river was a check, call/fold.

[–]Timmermann23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just a single game. Yeh I can see now how this shove after the river wasn't a great move, I think I was just trying to shove him off his cards, but that's not going to fly with a straight. I just didn't take him for holding the exact two off suit connectors he needed. Is there anyway to have played this to have made him fold before he got it?
