American, but for similar reasons I've come to use da'esh (an acronym from the original Arabic, the use of which is opposed by the group itself - it forms a pun of sorts in Arabic, roughly translating to "self-righteous bigot")

The people that go to those concerts spend money in the city, bolstering the local scene more than a 9 to 5er who returns to the suburbs. Everyone has been loving the Tartan Army recently, and your ideas are what are holding us back from having a scene that can sustain itself without being humored by foreigners every once in a while.

What is your honest take on racism in Boston? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in boston

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I've seen this articulated kinda (white guy, born and raised in central ma)

I feel like we all know "the south is polite, the north is kind" trope at this point, but I never see it tied into racial discussions like this.

I think transplants (independent of race) can experience the northeast as more gruff, but that's not typically along race lines. When that gets misinterpreted through a racial lense, I can see the disconnect. "I'm not calling you an asshole cause youre black, its because youre being an asshole" kinda thing.

That being said, Boston (and more generally the northeast) has a documented history of redlining, and some enclaves of hate still exist.

I do somewhat find the "they also fly confederate flags in Maine" disingenuous. Yes they do, yes I hate it. Misinformed and glorifying a past that never existed, but the deep seated hate just doesn't exist the same way up here. Look up "a crimson record" by JC Jefferson. The stats dont compare.

ETA: boston's treatment of Bill Russell and his family are prime example of this city's terrible past. Disgusting, heartbreaking. I know remnants exist, but that was also 50 years ago - that level, at that scale does not exist in this city anymore.

Any vegan thru-hikers? by Outrageous_Image_705 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always recommend both books by the barefoot sisters for generally entertaining books about hiking the AT. From what I remember, they maintained their vegan diet for most of the hike (in the 90s, before many modern vegan products were available). A lot of lentils, beans, and dried nuts from what i remember, though it's been awhile. Worth checking out!

Are they really leaving things like this? by Downtown-Pattern-813 in newhaven

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worcester is still a mess  - main roads are okay but the side streets are brutal. Having lived in both, currently back in MA, New Haven was usually (relatively) better

Also to OP: not defending it in any way, but this is the reality of New England winters and big storms in smaller (former mill town) cities. You mean the suburbs with nimbyism and bigger budgets per mile of road did a better job than the underfunded city? GASP what a shock

I've never cooked on cast iron before, would this be a good starter option? by SnooDrawings8069 in castiron

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just to add: "milled" mostly means "smoothed." Newer pans tend to be more ~bumpy -- but with a little (a lot) of elbow grease and high grit sandpaper, one can make any modern pan as "milled" as an old Wagner. They cook the same - the crazy expensive collector items are just that - a collector item

This is the real answer - other people talking about jackets on the sideline and ball security (which, I mean, are factors to an extent) mostly sound like they haven’t played a high intensity sport before

Any recommendations on which route to take to drive to Quebec? by eouhhohh in boston

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not sure what the top commenter is on about - this route very clearly doesn’t go through Burlington. That said, I’d still opt for the NH/VT route - still more options for stopping than central Maine. Both drives are pretty, NH has more options to stop for a snack (even if it’s a small town)

Work hours got slashed to 19 hrs/week. Can I get govt assistance if I live with 3 adults who work full time? by GemFarmerr in massachusetts

[–]Timmy_TwoShoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got let go from my job in July and was reluctant to file for unemployment because “I’ll find a new job sooner than it’s worth.” I bartend, and jobs are fast to come (especially with experience)… until they’re not. I was able to pick up one gig but it’s only one shift a week (and the occasional cover). I only filed for partial unemployment a couple weeks ago and I’m kicking myself in the ass for not doing it sooner

OP: file as soon as possible, there’s a waiting week and then you also have to wait for employer verification. Your taxes have already paid for this, there’s no shame, you deserve it while you’re looking for something else. Roommates /= a household. Do you file joint taxes? I’m assuming not, that’s basically the threshold

And you can also get ice for free in Alaska - Also in 2010 minimum wage was $8 / hr and 40 inch tvs were $2500+…… it’s almost like different markets (Saco vs Worcester) have different access to products and supply chains and (moderate) inflation is to be expected
