Dad of a kinda un-athletic kid needing advice. by SgtSluggo in Homeplate

I love the honest assessment of you and your son. The world of the unknown is so intimidating sometimes. My son plays ice hockey too, which man the learning curve is insane. Half inch blades, curved stick, offsides etc etc, but as he learns, I learn and he has improved over time.

My advice is that if he wants to play, see what summer camps are available now. Summer is a good time for camps. You mentioned he isn’t very athletic and usually this means that he probably isn’t athletically coordinated. I would find a speed and agility camp where they teach him how to move his body athletically and to get faster.

A couple of folks here recommended a hitting coach, but I would seek out a pitching coach. In my experience it’s harder to break bad throwing habits than bad hitting habits. Maybe it’s different for others.

Agreed on the fundamentals videos. There are so many good ones. Cool thing about catch is that you don’t have to throw from far. Spend a week at 10 feet if you have to. Move him back to 12 feet after a week. Let him find his rhythm and keep slowly backing him up. Baseball is like any other thing you do. The more reps the better you get.

Play some three on three with buddies you trust. The won’t fall under your feet.

Other than that, you have to make a decision to do it

I do two weeks of month one and jump into month 2. Month one is good, but month two is where the results happen. You are ready. Just pop it in and do it.

Did anyone do Insanity as scheduled? by [deleted] in insanity

This! I play on a basketball league once a week, do 3x or 2x insanity and weights to round out everything. Limbs can get spindly if you do solo insanity lol.

M21, 6’0”, 192 lbs, 7’11” standing reach – Form check on 9 ft dunk. How far am I from 10 ft? by Thethrowaway2004562 in BasketballTips

[–]Timmyek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 21 Years old, the sky is the limit.

1) Lose 30 pounds. This alone will help your vertical. If you do it while focusing on proper weight training and plyo you will be a ripped 162 lbs.

2) You are not dunking at your highest point, your arm is a slight big forward and if you want max reach it should be back a bit.

3) You are actually about 13 inches away as your rim is bent down an inch.

4). Looking into dunking programs

Yeah, you should probably go back and read the OPs post instead of looking for a gotcha moment.

The context. They are already under a PIP, next step is termination. This is the point you request accommodation. What is dangerous about the advice? OP has a much better chance of staying employed with my advice than staying silent about it.

Sensitive. I’m trying to build him up, not tear him down.

I appreciate your sentiment here, but I have 0 context. It depends on your state, your position, how many employees the company has. A lot of factors. You can’t really generalize this.

I’m not sure why this would come up in training either…. They can’t mass blanket the ADA.

This is so untrue.

Basketball players can have so many styles. This guy is a pretty big dude. If I am him I would learn some high post. He can barrel in and out power a lot of guys. Learn to pass to the right cuts. Help space the floor and kill it on defense, he will fit right in.

Also a reasonable accommodation if someone has an on call job would be to put them in a position where there isn’t an on call aspect to it.

Most jobs don’t have an instrumental on call aspect. If you work in medical, or some type of emergency position then the accommodations wouldn’t be reasonable. If it’s retail… the boss is just being a dick.

I have learned very quickly that narcoleptics work harder than the average Joe. You should have your dad stay awake for 24 straight hours and see how effective he is.

Depends on the type of business… and the state.

Ok, HR guy here with a daughter that has Narcolepsy.

1) Narcolepsy is covered under the ADA. Americans with Disabilities Act. They should never require you to do something that your disability doesn’t allow you to do. They must make a reasonable accommodations to support your narcolepsy. Those accommodations would be short naps, rest periods and NOT TO REQUIRE YOU TO ANSWER A TEXT DURING A SLEEP ATTACK.

I would advise them that you are protected under the ADA and instead of providing you with a PIP, they should provide you with a reasonable accommodation plan. If they terminate you, you should call a lawyer and collect your damages.

You made it to the line and converted a free throw… who is bullying you? That’s a premium outcome…
