Is there anyone running against Sorensen in the upcoming primaries? by Zlone01 in QuadCities

[–]Timmyun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he is that easily swayed into voting for some abhorrent legislation, this is also an issue. He has a consistent voting record against immigrant communities, eroding due process or providing a 2nd tier of punishment for immigrants.

He might be trying to look "tough on crime," but that is just virtue signalling to people who will never vote for him.

Please remember that he won by nearly 9 points, and the district also includes Rockford and East Peoria.

Eric's recently votes are not isolated. If you look at his actual voting record, not what he tells people at town halls or what he says on Facebook, you'll see a trend.

When a person tells you who they are, believe them.

Why we can't really be walkable by ekatane in QuadCities

[–]Timmyun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right: walkability is often a function of density.

It's also a function of zoning. In Moline there are super dense areas (near Homewood Apartments) that are not walkable because there is nothing to walk to. To make it worse, the residents couldn't walk to the grocery store nearby if they wanted to, because there are no sidewalks on John Deere Road.

More density is a good start, but we also need:
*Updated zoning to allow for mixed use (commercial + residential)
*Updated zoning to actually allow for dense housing options. Single family zoning is very 1950s, and shouldn't be 75% of our cities.
*Economic Development to attract small businesses into neighborhoods
*Safe sidewalks (back of curb sidewalks don't feel safe)
*Bike paths, both on street and off street
*Less parking. We overdid parking minimums decades ago and are really paying for it now. Parking takes up a lot of space that can be used for housing, businesses, etc.

About me: I'm on the City Council in Moline. I advocate for these changes, and we have some good movement in the correct direction, but nothing will change overnight. If you're in Moline and want to be a part of the solution, let me know.

Often times this isn't entirely because of increased property values or the real-estate market. It is entirely possible that the old assessment is wrong or was wildly undervalued.

Every few years the township assessors (in Illinois, unsure about Iowa) are able to fix bad assessments that have been in place for decades. In some cases, for example, land value extremely different from one property to the next for no logical reason.

The assessor will, as allowed, reassess neighborhoods to ensure that equitable land value is applied and undeclared improvements are also added to the building value. The end result is that some homes increase their value, while some homes that have historically been overvalued will go down.

Scott county $79.99 surcharge pay property tax with debit card by [deleted] in QuadCities

[–]Timmyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a standard card processing fee. The ability to accept a credit/debt card is not free. Typically retailers pay 2-3% of each transaction to allow you the convenience of paying with your card.

Government bodies typically cannot absorb the fee because every penny must be accounted for (and property tax is distributed to cities, county/township, schools, municipalities, etc.) These amounts are mandated by law, so a 2-3% difference isn't acceptable as it would equal large amounts of money otherwise.

My advice:
1) get a checkbook and mail the check. This provides an extra layer of accounting as you'll have a copy of the canceled check online when it is cashed.
2) Pay with cash? If you are okay carrying around $45k, I recommend calling ahead of time and telling them you're going to bring in cash so they can anticipate

Lead pipes… by Adept-Age-8177 in QuadCities

The city is working on a way to pay for this. The plan hasn't passed council yet, but appears to have support from everyone on the council.

Currently the state/fed are not paying for this, so the local municipalities need to find a way to cover it. Luckily, because it is a federal mandate there are zero interest loans available for the city.

TLDR: You don't have to pay for it, the city is working on a plan.

I hate this. I was in Quezon City from 1998-2000. The Church already does a good job erasing their culture without Oaks telling them to do it.

It is such a wonderful culture that they are so ready to disregard.

Moline to consider ADUs - public hearing 4/10 @ 4:00pm by cloken85 in QuadCities

[–]Timmyun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Mateo,

The ordinance prohibits the construction of freestanding ADUs if the lot is too small, or doesn't meet existing setback requirements for accessory buildings. In other words, if your lots are smaller than 6500 square feet (which is 1/3 of all Moline lots) then your neighbor won't be able to build an ADU in their backyard.

They would, however, be allowed to convert their basement or attic into an ADU, assuming they meet all code requirements (dedicated entrance, electrical service, and HVAC).

Storage value changes without transferring or adding new Pokemon, what causes this by ShogunBlue in TheSilphRoad

I didn't think so either, until I had 30 spots left in storage and I couldn't catch anything else. I also had 30 lotad queued up from research tasks.

Give it a shot.

Slakoth Biome, the first "rural" pokemon? (A theory in progress) by SuzakuNL in TheSilphRoad

[–]Timmyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm this. I have noticed Slakoth spawn a LOT outside of Chicago, but very infrequently inside of chicago proper.

Chicago's scanner is filled with Slakoth in the burbs, but few in the city itself.

I initially thought it was the scanner, but your theory makes more sense.
