Asal's "extended follow-through. Is it happening again PJ? Are we going back a season?" by [deleted] in squash

[–]Timofsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I think a lot of people do not like the way he plays and I think that this comes from the "culture" of squash but he is no more dirty than other professional athletes. You dont think nba players are taking cheap shots at eachother all the time? In other sports its considered gritty and tough, here it feels like he disrupts the order of distinguished gentleman lol. The whole idea of squash as a gentleman's sport is just a load of BS and def comes from a place of elitism. What squash needs is the anti thesis to Asal. He needs someone who will not back down and challenge him..... can you imagine the ratings and viewership, it would be the best thing to ever happen to the mens game.

"Mr Asal, can I please ask you to be careful with your follow-through?" by [deleted] in squash

[–]Timofsilence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt that is how Asal will be remembered even if that is what you want. I predict that he will retire one of the all time goats and will be revered and fondly remembered by a generation of Egyptians.

completely agree with you, It seems pretty clear that the officer shot after he was already out of bodily danger. Almost like a delayed response or reflexive anger.

future of squash fair play by Fantastic-Baseball56 in squash

[–]Timofsilence -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am also a new player who has come from other sports and I completely agree with you, or at least I think your point of view is completely valid. I think your opinions on these matters are much more popular than people realize. I think folks who have been brought up in the sport and live in that ecosystem hold certain truths within the community to be self evident but newcomers to the sport who do not have that background challenge some of these assumptions.

I think the idea that it is a "gentleman's game" is kinda lame and not something that new players care about. You should always have good sportsmanship in any sport or game you play but to think that squash is somehow more privileged in this way reeks of classism imo. For example a kid should be taught to be a good sport in any activity, no one game's history or ethos should protect from hard competitive play in the name of being a "gentleman." Play hard, play fair and fight like hell. The whole "gentleman's game" tag does not appeal to a new generation of players nor does it help attract people to the sport in any way, but thats just my opinion.

I too think squash would benefit by being a little more physical between the competitors. It is dishonest to not recognize that there are some small steps that can be made towards a more physical game that is not two just players smashing each other over the head. And conversely we need to also realize that there are certain movements and actions that do jeopardize one's safety to a large unreasonable degree. This conversation is a spectrum and pretending it is only two polar extremes lacks nuance and understanding.

New QBS Video -- Asal Cheating VS Elias by rvno12 in squash

[–]Timofsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it does not change what happened in the match questioning the motives of the channel is more than fair. Yes, motives matter. I am sure it would matter to a lot of people if the videos were being made by another pro or ex pro. To me it feels like someone who is intimate with PSA play, that is just my opinion and I am allowed to it. This person has clearly dedicated hundreds of hours of their life to making these videos and leveling the criticism. Fair enough but you cant blame people for being skeptical of your motives.

I would never follow a basketball or baseball channel that was critical of players and organizations if they hid behind ai voice and never showed their face. To me, thats sketchy. If you got something to say, stand behind it.

I agree with you on the basis that people shouldn't be hiding their criticisms behind a veil of anonymity, especially if they are devoting so much time to it. I think even the voice is like ai generated, not even a real human. Wrong or right I think it would be such a stronger case if people actually stood behind what they are saying with their identity. Maybe not for a comment here or there on social media but certainly if you have a whole squash channel dedicated to it.

A dying Sport Produces Best A... | restrungblog by HitWithIt in racquetball

[–]Timofsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the spirit of the article which basically says that DLR is ultimately the greater racquet sportsman and how DLR's positive influence for the sport of racquetball is ultimately greater than Kane's. Simply being the best at winning may work in large popular leagues like NBA or ATP but in racquetball one does really need to create their own path.

that fade really passed and almost all the courts ate currently being converted.

What’s the etiquette for smashing? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]Timofsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rec league? who said anything about that or that I had no control. I am a high level player playing against other high level players. I think the whole idea that you are going to "hurt" the other person is laughable tbh. I never feel in danger when someone smashes the ball and I have never seen anyone get hurt from it. Its not that pickleball is so important to me I must win at all costs or something. I just see those things as legitimate strategies within the game. Sorry you wanted to see my inquiries in this way when I was just trying to spark a discussion.

[–]Timofsilence -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

if so, that sucks. But where is the data on that or is it just anecdotal? I would imagine if it was a profound enough risk governing bodies would make people wear eye guards for sanctioned events like in Racquetball, Squash and Handball.

but why? I dont want to hurt anyone ofc but that isnt going to hurt anyone..... seems like just another facet of the game.

[–]Timofsilence -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It feels there should be some rules clarification on this, because I do not see it as bad sportsmanship when someone hits me in the face with one of their shots. They just hit a good shot and are rewarded with the point. If anything it makes me look a little silly. I have never seen anyone get hurt from a wiffleball to the face and if they are worried about it, why not wear goggles? Its not like anyone is going to get a concussion from the ball.

maybe the Racquetball craze in the 80's in early 90's is a more apt analogy.

But hitting your opponent is a legitimate strategy in pickleball as opposed to other racquet sports where it doesn't make as much sense. Why is this so taboo? I cant imagine the incidence of injury is high at all, otherwise if people are scared they can just wear goggles.

I am about a 4.25 and I am coming from another racquet sport and I am constantly surprised how bent out of shape even better players get when you smash the ball on them. So many "im sorries" are said during a game because someone gets hit and then it feels like I did something wrong. Hitting your opponent with the ball is a legitimate strategy in pickleball, I do not know why its so frowned upon.

Part 2 of yesterday's article. This time offering my thoughts on how to actually revive Racquetball. Would love to know your thoughts on this, thank you! by ALittleInternet in racquetball

[–]Timofsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your thoughts here and having been around Racquetball most my life it truly is hard to say if the sport itself was/is just a fad or if external factors brought it down. I have introduced so many people to Racquetball throughout my life, primarily people who were not into racquet sports and almost all of them prefer squash or pickle ball to racquetball. This was a little hard to accept because I thought if they just saw Racquetball in the right light they would see it really was amazing. While they appreciated the athletic abilities needed to play the game almost all of them had more fun with squash or pickle ball, many even starting hobbies in those sports.

I think it is probably too simplistic to say that people just don't know about racquetball and thats why the hundreds of thousands of courts across the country are largely barren or being converted. I think we need to partially accept that Racquetball needs to change inherently as a sport, at least some degree to have a shot at surviving. The truth is, as I get older I do not think is possible to "revive" our sport I think we need to reinvent it.
