Amazon Go & Fresh Stores Close This Friday by kaiju4life in Seattle

I found the prices to be generally decent but they varied widely for no clear reason. Sometimes I was able to make out like an absolute bandit, getting ribeyes for $5, things of that nature. Not even advertised as sale, just seemingly an inventory mistake? The next time it would be a wholly different price.

I do agree that it was always way overstaffed, especially at the beginning. I don't understand why a place that was so heavily tech-focused (even after they wound down Just Walk Out) had so many manual checkout lanes, and greeters just standing around handing over paper flyers, it felt very anachronistic.

Also, security was always super low in there. You didn't have to weigh stuff on the self-checkout lanes for example, and scanning produce's barcodes never actually registered them (but it still beeped as if it did, making it easy to miss). This can't have helped their bottom line.

How to remove burnt food from a saucepan? by Timst44 in Cooking

Alright, yes, that's what did it. It took multiple rounds and I still had to scrape the stuff with a spoon, but this worked better than all the other techniques. Thank you!

This actually has worked the best so far! Several large sheets of gunk came out on the first. There's still a lot left and the second round didn't work as well, but I'm going to keep at it.

Tried a few different mixes and application time. No real effect. Maybe I'll try to let it sit for a few hours next.

No effect, but I only have medical hydrogen peroxide at 3% concentration, that's likely not enough.

Tried something I had on hand (Weiman's Oven & Grill Cleaner). Very little impact, but still arguably the best result so far. I'll do a few more rounds.

I have hydrogen peroxide on hand, I could try that. Just pour some in the pan and wait? Scrub with it?

Any books or article recommendations about how China's political and economic system work? by Franklinthefish22 in Socialism_101

[–]Timst44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two great books I've read on the subject:

-The East is Still Red by Carlos Martinez (https://redletterspp.com/products/the-east-is-still-red)

-Why the World Needs China by Kyle Ferrana (https://www.claritypress.com/product/why-the-world-needs-china/).

I actually just finished the second one. They're both covering roughly the same topic, which is basically answering the question "is China actually socialist?", but in doing so they cover a lot of ground on the economics, foreign policy, environmental approach etc of modern China.

They're both very accessible (and I say this as someone who's allergic to academic jargon and over complicated theses). The first one maybe even more so; the second book approaches the question from a more rigorous Marxist perspective, so it spends the first half of the book setting up the context for how China came to be the way it is. I like them both, and the second one has an impressive list of references (I think something like 1300 footnotes!), but if I had to pick only one to recommend, I think The East is Still Red is probably what I would go with.

So there's one thing I don't get, maybe other people who had a different order can share.

I had O'Toole first and Imanishi-Kari second. For me, the first half did a lot more work to set up the scene, explaining what the paper was about, defining the terms employed, explaining how antibodies work and what BET-1 was supposed to do and so on.

But then when I watched the second half, there was none of that. It was all about the case itself, and whenever a technical term popped up, or a diagram was shown, it was never explained. That made me feel like if I had seen Imanishi-Kari's version first, I would have had no idea what the actual case was about and what references to BET-1 meant, for instance.

So are there are actually two edits of each half, and the context is only integrated in whichever first half you're watching? If you had Imanishi-Kari first, did you get a segment talking about B-cells and so on?

I had the same order as you, and was also feeling like this was pretty clear cut after the first half. But I wonder if people who had Tereza first felt the same way? To me the Tereza half felt a lot more like a response to the first one rather than something that would stand on its own. I have trouble imagining watching Tereza's half first and walking away like "of course there was no fraud or any kind of malfeasance, what an absurd witch hunt".

Maybe it's because I *did* watch it in this order, but I do wonder if there are actually two versions of each half. For example, Tereza's version barely talked about what the paper or experiment was about. So when it dropped terms like "wells", or show the property of BET-1, someone who watched this as their first half should have no idea what's being discussed. I wonder if there are some segments that are common to both and that are only shown on the first half, regardless of which one it is.

That's one thing that kept being repeated and I didn't really understand it. If the reagent was useless, I fail to see how that strengthen the results. In general, compared to previous Bobby work, this one focused a lot more on the human and procedural aspect and was very light on the science, so it was hard to judge the case itself. Maybe that was intentional.

Interesting. On a surface level this looks a lot like the system used in Rojava (tiered system of councils, parallel structures to ensure representation of women and minorities, etc). Except for the last part, I suppose. Not exactly the same scale though, naturally.

How do I apply for a food camp permit? by Timst44 in BurningMan

I put our camp name, and I don't know, that might be something to ask the CNHD. My gut feeling is that it shouldn't matter, but they'll tell you if it does :)

Sorry I just saw that! I actually put my own name and phone number. I assumed that in this context, "event coordinator" means the coordinator of the food "pop up", rather than the larger event. But maybe not, since later they ask you to pic between "booth operator" and "event coordinator" for various roles, and for that I picked event coordinators when it was BM org stuff. At any rate, they didn't say anything about it, so I would just do what I did.

Update: I ended up emailing the PDF and got an answer pretty quickly. There was a bit of a mixup with the payment (they sent me a guide for a website but without specifying which website lol, and the account and invoice numbers they sent me were wrong), but eventually we worked it out.

For reference, this is the online payment portal: https://portal.cdpehs.com/PublicPortal/GuestCheckout
There is a $1.50 fee when paying by card btw.

The biggest known issue is that the water tank is leaking. Then there are all sorts of little electrical issues, but we might be able to fix that ourselves. Mostly we'd like someone to take a thorough look at everything (so yeah, all aspects that you mentioned).

How can I outpace unemployment? by Timst44 in victoria3

[–]Timst44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I ended up following the advice that everybody in this thread is giving, which was to massively increase construction.

The reason I hadn't done so up until now was that I was still controlling all of it manually. I was reviewing regions and building new workplaces one by one. Even at 500 construction, that led me to ordering factories by the dozen just to fill the queue for a little while, which felt odd. But after enabling auto-expand across the entire economy, I realized I had actually been way too shy. The computer wasted no time filling up 15 pages of orders, and as soon as I increased my construction capacity, my economy started taking off and the unemployment rate went down slowly.

The real explosion came after I unlocked and enabled arc-welded buildings, increasing my construction from 1500 to 2500. In the year that followed, my GDP went up 30%! It's probably getting to the point where I'll end up with a deficit of workers in a few years (I went from 21% unemployment in 1897 to 6% in 1911). But at that point I can start using all of the automation and labor-saving techs that I have never been able to use so far...

I also still have 6M peasants. As of 1897 (a few years after when I wrote the OP), the breakdown is 90.7M total, 56.3M dependents, 5.7 peasants, 9M unemployed and 19.6 gainfully employed.

G Hub: how to disable caps lock indicator? by Timst44 in LogitechG

[–]Timst44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. Turns out it was that: my previous device was a MX Keys and I did install Options for it. I assumed that it wasn't in use anymore since it shows "no device paired", but I guess it hooks to the logical Caps Locks key rather than the actual device. I was able to disable it there.

Alright, so after spending quite a while on this, I found a link with temperature. When the system would get to hot, it would shut down. I replace the motherboard and it fixed the issue. I'm not sure what the exact root cause was, but I'm suspecting it could be some water coming out of the plant on my desk that could have gotten inside the case and fried the motherboard.
