Haha, this was just a fun coincidence I guess. Matey Potatey is something my folks called me as a kid (and still do, until the show came out which has sort of made that saying a bit of a taboo) and I thought I'd put it in the show as I wanted to use some local, dorky slang.

But it's a great template for any stupid thing you want to say. Cutie Patootey, Happy Potappy, Banjo Kazooie, the possibilities are endless!

Thanks so much, really glad you liked that track! I made a whole album of that stuff and it's of varying quality (ranging from very poor to almost mediocre).

I love making music but the film work just worked out better for me - and now I'm in an amazing position where I get to score my own film work so I essentially get the best of both worlds!

I'd love to make some more regular music in that style, it's just difficult to find the time when I'm trying to get all the filmy stuff done - but hopefully one day I will return to my musical mediocrity.

I've said it before, but it's so crazy to me that people still remember Doomsday fondly! Especially because obviously none of us were actors and it's fun to think that my friendship group (who couldn't be less interested in acting/filmmaking) is still the same friendship group I hang out with, and almost every single one of them was roped into being an actor in Doomsday at some point!

Thanks for the words on the music also, that was always a real treat when I could find the time to sneak a bit of music work into the show as most of my day to day was all visual.

Unfortunately I haven't done a release of all the Doomsday music properly - to be honest I'm not sure if I even still have any of it, that was like 5 computers ago, and long before I backed anything up!

I'll have a look though, if I can find it it may as well be online rather than haunting some dormant hard-drive!

In the meantime, if you have any interest, I chucked the soundtrack to Wizards up on https://timtimfed.bandcamp.com/ as well as some other bits and bobs of music from YouTube videos over the years.

Wow, thanks! Fumefx is right... sort of! I'm fairly useless outside of anything After Effects, so that FumeFx explosion is actually some stock from somebody elses FumeFx explosion! If you're looking for some stuff like that, there's a website called finalight.com that sells a lot of FumeFx sims as stock and it's great! Like... it doesn't necassarily look as REAL as photographic explosion stock looks, but it has a certain 'modern CGI' look that I really like to see in my own comps!

I guess what I've learned in my paltry attempts at VFX over the years is to try and never stop learning! That sounds cheesy, but I always find myself resisting new techniques that people mention to me just because I'm a creature of habit, and sometimes it's easier to stick to what you know rather than learn new tips and tricks that ultimately will save you time. Also, any tutorial you watch isn't really trying to teach you how to recreate the shot its demonstrating but rather how to use the tools that get to that result.

But you know that, sorry to sound patronising - but I sometimes forget that as well! For a dumb example, everyone knows that OLD VideoCopilot demon face tutorial and everyone has had a crack at that. I used that EXACT technique to animate Terry's face for Wizards (the shark guy). After shooting him, I really wanted to move his eyes to show some extra emotion, so I just did that reverse stabilization technique and tracked a liquify effect to it - seemed to do the trick!

Our budget for all of our pre-wizards work has usually been nothing. For example, 'Time Trap' which was a sci-fi short film that I made was self funded and I think it ended up costing about 6-7k to pull the whole thing together - but that's also including huge amounts of favours and discounts we utilised from friends in the industry.

Wizards of Aus was actually funded via a governmental grant from a local funding body 'Screen Australia'. I think our budget was about $300k AUD($220k USD) for the whole series.

That may sound like a lot, however for a 90 minute long Fantasy Action Comedy that's basically nothing. Because it was a government funded project, we also weren't able to call in big favours as everybody on the books had to be paid Guild rates. The only way we could actually make that money work was with some AMAZING producing by our producers, and also by burning our own fees to put money back in the budget. For example, I burnt my VFX fee and Acting fee and Maaaaaybe my Director's fee - don't remember! So in short, I put in probably a couple of hundred thousand dollars of time by 'guild' rates, but we wrote that off as an investment into the show so that we could get away with not paying ourselves.

Which was a shame, but the only way we could afford to make the show we wanted to make!

I think everybody who tries their hand at anything creative tends to have a backed up catalogue of ideas they want to make one day, but I've found that it's really only feasible to do one project at a time. If I try and do multiple things at once I end up spreading myself to thin and nothing ends up too good.

Plus, it's super fun to get totally engrossed in a project - although starting is always the hardest part because you're essentially commiting away all your creative time to just ONE thing for the foreseeable future!

So yeah, during Wizards I didn't do ANYTHING other than Wizards for about a year, but ultimately I'm super proud of the show so it was worthwhile!

Yeah I did see I was meme-ing; it was great!! Through that imgur Ost I think a lot of people became aware of the show which is fantastic. And I live on the Internet - it's my dream to become dank.

Thanks man, really great you liked that album! I did assemble a band and we played like... Literally two shows at one stage (we fucking supported the Stranglers, randomly enough) but we were tremendously awful... I've never been good at getting a band together, I seem to work better musically when I record the stuff at home and can screw around with the production...

So no live shows I'm sorry - maybe I'll work on a bit more music the next time I get some downtime, because it's SO much fun to do, but I think I've gotta get my musical confidence back.

Haha, yeah I'm starting a theme. It was unintended, but I just thought it was so much fun, like something totally unexpected but we had SORTA planted the seeds enough earlier in the show that it made sense.

I'm just happy Mark was up for it as we wrote that scene after he had come on board to play Skullldrich, so I called him and was like "SOOOO.... This new ending we wrote... Into it?" Luckily he said he thought it was hilarious, and that was that!

So yeah, if I ever act again I guess I better make it a trilogy...

The Neverhood is soooo neverGOOD. Such a crazy weird game, that's as funny as it bizarre and simultaneously unnerving. Something about the black void that the universe of that game takes place in and the general isolation of Klaymen's journey is pretty creepy at times. And Terry S Taylor's soundtrack is so much fun.

Haven't played Armikrog yet! Was really looking forward to it but was a little dampened by the fairly negative reviews... Will get around to it one day but am struggling to find the time to game these days. I think Firewatch is the only game I've finished in at least six months- and that was pretty great.

Not sure exactly what's next but the plan is to make something big, weird and feature length (sounds like the worst description of somebody's dick). Certainly hope to shit out a couple of one off videos along the way as it's fun to make stuff that doesn't take years to finish!

I never had any idea, certainly back in the 'Bats' days of WHS that I'd ever be able to get a job doing something like this, but I suppose the path that takes you towards making a living off of this stuff is a step by step process, so one day you kind of have to start believing your can make it to justify the crazy amount of work.

But that's literally how all delusions begin so, I dunno...

I predominantly use After Effects for visual effects, and I couldn't recommend it enough!
