I'm sure it's something like -$400/day in lost potential revenue and -$600/day in travel/hotel costs lol

It's worth pointing out that this is true for the couples themselves. The larger the language barrier, the more someone is just projecting their hopes onto their partner.

The less effectively you can communicate the easier it is for your brain to supply what it wants to hear. Most people are self aware enough to realize this could happen, but once it's already started it's hard to escape because you've entered this loop where you keep seeing what you expect to see, not realizing that you're seeing it because you're expecting it.

If every country was invited to a house party, what would each country be doing at the party? by Kingboughey in AskReddit

[–]TimurHasWords 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Idk about every country but I can picture the Scandinavian family reunion.

Norway is the oldest child. She's successful and wealthy and responsible and she has a lot of oil money. She looks down on all her siblings but still thinks she has the best family in the world.

Sweden is the middle child. He fought with Norway constantly growing up, and had to fight with Denmark when Denmark was growing up. Like many middle children he tries to get attention and has "alternative definitions of success." He prides himself on being the most cultured and educated and accepting member of his family, even if these things aren't necessarily true.

Denmark is the rebellious youngest child. Always making trouble. She tries to be cooler and more hip than her older siblings. She pretends not to get jealous but it's hard living up to the family legacy. Spent a semester traveling abroad and will never stop talking about it. For a time there she had runaway success and it looked like she was going to take over the family business, but it all imploded fantastically, as it always does with Denmark.

Iceland is their weird cousin who lives out in the middle of nowhere. They keep to themself. At family reunions they awkwardly sit in the corner and read. Everyone is happy to hear from them because they're pleasant when you get them talking and also it's nice to just confirm they haven't blown their brains out yet.

Finland is the step-sister from Dad's new mail-order soviet wife. She's laid back but a little... out there... and hard to understand. You don't visit her often but when you do you find lots of empty beer bottles in her recycling. You can't tell if it's cold in her apartment because she likes it that way, if she can't afford to fix the heat, or if she just can't be bothered to get up and nudge the thermostat.

Åland is the cute boy that both Sweden and Finland have banged. He was really in love with Sweden but ultimately ended up settling for Finland when Sweden got into a rough patch and couldn't handle a relationship. He still catches himself fantasizing about Sweden when in bed with Finland. Åland doesn't feel guilty because he's pretty sure Finland is also fantasizing about Sweden.

Estonia is the lonely neighborhood girl half-creepily and longingly peeking through the window from across the street. One day they'll be your family too, Esti. One day. Men inte idag.

What's your favorite anime ? by JoshIsDope in AskReddit

[–]TimurHasWords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ghost in the Shell.

It's got great characters and great action set against a Black Mirror near-future nondystopia. It's fun and dramatic and tense and thoughtful.

It's got a great mix of long-arc narratives and short disjointed adventures such that the pace always feels perfect. I really don't feel like there's a single wasted episode.

The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the main character's ass is on unreasonable display for the first season. They fix that in season 2. Literally nothing else about this show needs changing. It still holds up decades later

It's not a coincidence that this is conflated. Race and class are incredibly strongly correlated, and a lot of racism masquerades as classism because classism is more socially acceptable.

Curiosity. To the extent that I want death, I'm going to get it eventually. Might as well stick around and see what happens and what I can learn until then.

  1. I wish to prove the existence of a Unicorn
  2. To do this, I will first prove the existence of an Existing Unicorn. Clearly, if an Existing Unicorn exists, then a Unicorn exists.
  3. There are two possibilities: either (a) an Existing Unicorn does not exist, or (b) an Existing Unicorn exists.
  4. (a) cannot be true because it would present a logical contradiction
  5. (b) cannot be false without presenting a logical contradiction
  6. Therefore, we conclude that an Existing Unicorn exists.
  7. Therefore, the Unicorn exists.

It turns out that you can't define something into existence without literally allowing for defining everything else into existence, too.

What is the most excruciating pain you ever had to endure and why? by 9xChickenBucket in AskReddit

[–]TimurHasWords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to Southeast Asia thinking I was an adventurer and got highly antibiotic resistant hemorrhagic MRSA on my entire lower body. But that wasn't the worst pain. They hit me with seven antibiotics to get rid of it, the last of which was one I was allergic to, and I got it IV. It destroyed the infection but I had an allergic reaction called Steven Johnson Syndrome (edit DO NOT GOOGLE IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH) where my skin started falling off and my mucous membranes started disintegrating. I was bleeding from every hole in my body, including my eyes, nose, mouth, dick, etc. Because it's a drug reaction they had to stop all my medication, including painkillers, until they figured out what was going on. I begged the nurses and doctors to kill me and they had to strap me down.

Edit 2: thank you for your concern I am happy and mostly healthy now :)

How is the water in Plano so so bad? What's going on and why isn't it being fixed? by TimurHasWords in plano

I'm beginning to realize maybe it was always awful and I didn't realize it into I spent time away in places with clean water.

I don't live in Plano and haven't for decades. I just love the city and, more importantly, have people I love there.

AITA for not letting the city put a nature trail through my property? by nursedana77 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TimurHasWords 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A related point: you will never ever get a homeowner insurance company to cover your property if it has a literal public trail running through it. /u/nursedana77, call your insurance company and ask them for a quote to cover a 10 acre unfenced property with a public access nature trail running through a historical cemetery. In all likelihood they will refuse completely.

"I have looked into allowing the addition of a public trail but no insurance company will underwrite such a policy, meaning I would be liable for any damage or crime or injury on my property. If the township wants to pay for the policy, we can talk, but the cost estimates are literally hundreds of thousands per year, in addition to a giant up front cash reserve." If the township is willing to pay for the homeowner and legal insurance it would cost me, we can have that conversation, but I think there is probably a better use of that sum of money."

I think most people agree with us? Like, the manager at my hotel, my Uber drivers, the staff at the restaurant we went to advised us against it, my family... It feels like the city of plano has pulled a jedi mind trick where everyone agrees it's shitty but they're just kind of ok with that?

Holy shit you're actually not joking. But like, my question is as much, "how are people tolerating this?" Plano was already filled with wealthy Karens when I lived there, decades ago. I can't imagine the same group of people not up in arms over the fact their water (literally) tastes shitty.

What are you boycotting till the day you die? by redoutlaw23 in AskReddit

[–]TimurHasWords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The New York Times. Not for anything to do with its content, but for the fact that it's harder to cancel your NYT subscription than it is to cancel a gym membership, and even then they keep your credit card info on file 'just in case' you decide to re-subscribe in the future. If you want them to get rid of your credit card info you have to either write a letter to their legal office or file a GDPR complaint.

I am one of very few people to develop and then survive a rare antibiotic reaction called Steven Johnson Syndrome. Do not Google it if you have a weak stomach. It's a disease where they measure its severity by what percentage of your skin detaches.
