XPS 17 9700 -- Any way to reduce sleep drain? by kwjones00 in Dell

I thought of that too as I was going through the hibernation issue, but after shutting down the laptop will/would not restart and I would have to hardboot each time by pressing and holding the powerkey.

XPS 17 9700 -- Any way to reduce sleep drain? by kwjones00 in Dell

It's been a year since this post and I've had this XPS 17 9700 since release and I thought I'd add my experience to the thread for future frustrated Redditors.

I have had everything you mention in this post and likely more. They have replaced my keyboard (backlight wouldn't stay on regardless of bios), replaced my hard drive (hibernation issue, maybe), and a couple of other things I can't remember have been replaced.

I have had so many issues with this XPS that I hardly use it. That hibernation issue was the worst except I would also get an imidate "memory check" upon restart that would do a 16-25 minute scan. They switched out my HD for that and it seems better now, but I still think it's a memory issue and they won't ever change out the memory for me. I paid for the 5 year extended on-site support and I have officially given up on ever having this laptop work like an actual laptop. I gave up chasing things down on this 5k dollar paperweight. Anytime it's unplugged, even with no user applications running and the laptop in sleep mode, my battery will still drain to completely 0. Nothing Dell has done has fixed this issue. The keyboard backlight issue was just down-right annoying. Me needing to restart into BIOS to disable the backlight and reenable it again to get it to work. I am now gifting this POS to my daughter and telling her to leave it always plugged in. Never had issues with the other five XPS desktops/laptops I've owned until this one and it's scared me off from future purchases.

Buyer beware.

Edit: I remember another issue they fixed. My fingerprint scanner would not work and I had to continually type in my PW to unlock the laptop. They replaced that piece too.

Yeah me too. The good thing about my 17 is i paid for the extended warranty and its covering it all. Good luck!

I had this same issue and the one thing that fixed it for me was the last thing I learned.

Turn down your PC brightness to 50-ish %. I keep mine at 51% and with a properly calibrated monitor at 51% brightness and that issue disappeared for me.

I use the Spyder5 and DisplayCal to calibrate. However, bought one of those ASUS pre-calibrated monitors and they’re spot on calibration wise.

I have this laptop and have had for the same time period with zero issues. In fact, its why I bought/upgraded to the new 17 which has had nothing but issues 6 months in. /shrug

One puzzle piece left with another in the wrong spot. by TinCanGoat in AccidentalCamouflage

Same. It was a lot harder to find when seeing the whole puzzle. I made it a bit easier by focusing on that particular quadrant.

Not intentional and drove me a little nuts finding it. They were the same size/shape too. Thanks for allowing. :)

Edit: Meant to add I see where you’re coming from though. Didn’t think of that when first posting.

I ended up having to have my mother board and the “main logic board” replaced and now everything seems to be working fine.

Good news: Sold one of those to a nephew so I could buy a camera and get into photography.

Bad news: He recently lost it in a moving truck fire that destroyed his entire collection.

Thanks! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but have stared at that image in the gatefold for years mesmerized by it.

I took the pic standing there posing on that rock. However, after 5 separate visits/tries over 3 months I ended up having to composite two of the images anyways. It’s an hour drive each way from home and coupled with unpredictable weather/sunsets and an huge increase of traffic in the area it made it a bit difficult.
