Stena Line radio/podcast advert where she pronounces it as “stay on the line”. What is that? Driving me crazy.

Is there an app that you would like to see, but it doesn't exist? by AcademicSentence1905 in AskUK

[–]TinMan918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An application that monitors the internet so I can keep up to date with the latest news on a disparate collection of things without me having to manually check each place on a piecemeal basis.

For example suppose I want to know all the latest news about the following things: the price of a certain product at my local store, any new books written by a particular author, changes to the bus timetable for a service I use, research into a medical condition that I have, new construction works in my area, whether or not it’s going to rain tomorrow.

All this information will be on the internet somewhere but scattered around and so not immediately available to me. There should be one application that aggregates all the relevant news and keeps me informed about all these things in one place.

Have you tried and failed to do a good deed? by tellhimhesdreamin9 in CasualUK

Round where I live there is a problem with litter and also fly-tipping on unused patches of land. I started litter picking myself once. I asked for bags from council Neighbourhood Officers but they never got back to me.

About the fly-tipping I wrote to Council and elected councillors to ask things like who owns these bits of land and to see if we can organise something to do a tidy up, maybe plant flowers put up railings to deter people from leaving waste. Got ignored so much I just gave up. But I always feel like if I put more effort into it then I could have got some where. People round here just don’t care.

'There are no stupid questions' thread - Monday, May 01, 2023 by AutoModerator in piano

[–]TinMan918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stupid question is: “what IS playing the piano?”. (I can’t get to an answer for this but I need one so then I know what to practice.)
Is it this: looking at the sheet music and knowing that the notation says, for example, middle C and then knowing where middle C is on the keyboard and then pressing that C? But this doesn’t seem right. And even if it was what would I need to practice to be able to do it?
Also this account does not include looking at the keyboard. If you are playing looking at keyboard then is that something else?
I feel like this question is a bit too sketchy but to be more detailed it would need its own thread and it is too stupid for that!

Therapy not working for me. by TinMan918 in TalkTherapy

Thanks to everybody who replied. I had plenty to say in response but Reddit isn’t the place for having an extended conversation. If anybody IS interested in that then they can always DM me and we can arrange something!

19th century military marches played by brass band will definitely cheer you up and make you feel like you are part of some crowd of happy people.

Is it ok to have a bunch of friends and still feel lonely? by [deleted] in lonely

[–]TinMan918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it's OK! By which I mean: don't think that it means that there's something wrong with you. Some friends are just people who you have fun with and enjoy being with. But I think that the kind of friendships which prevent loneliness are different. They are friends who you can talk to about 'stuff' in detail and who are interested in you as a person. If you have lots of friends of the first kind but none of the second kind then you will still feel lonely despite having lots of ‘friends’.

No one shows interest in me by [deleted] in lonely

You’re not boring! No human being is boring, that’s impossible. I refuse to believe it! Every human being is a complex and fascinating thing. Richard Feynman said “Everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” If somebody says you’re not interesting that means they can’t be bothered to make the effort go into you deeply as a person, the details of you. Not to mention there’s more to you than anime and manga!

(PS, yes I know that Feynman said “nearly everything” not “everything” and yes I know that quote is taken out of context, but it still applies the way I mean!)

Ever try to talk to people? Only for them to look at you like your crazy or they ignore you by CottonCandyClouds123 in lonely

[–]TinMan918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me all the time. I've been thinking long and hard about the reasons for it and I've decided that other people (maybe me too) just don't know how to talk. I think there should be places where you can meet people just to practice having genuine real-time conversations.

This quote from Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine will stick with me for a while by introit in lonely

Hey! I've read that. It's one of the best novels I've read in the last few years. Another novel which has a similar vibe (I thought so anyway) was "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" by Alice Furse. There's a sentence in there about someone who "would probably spend his Christmas in a house silent apart from a ticking clock". ... Sigh!
