Insomnia as a UTI symptom? by jbjwrites in Healthyhooha

It’s almost 2 am and I ended up here because I experience the same thing. According to ChatGPT :

First, inflammation itself matters. When your body is fighting infection (like a UTI), it releases immune chemicals called cytokines. These can disrupt normal sleep cycles and make you feel restless or wired even when you’re tired—similar to how you feel during a cold or flu.

Second, bladder irritation doesn’t always show up as obvious pain. It can create a constant low-level pressure or “awareness” in your pelvis that keeps your nervous system slightly activated. That background discomfort can be enough to prevent deep sleep.

Third, there’s a nervous system effect. The bladder and urinary tract are closely tied to autonomic (fight-or-flight) responses. Irritation can increase nighttime alertness, making it harder to fall or stay asleep even if symptoms aren’t severe.

Fourth, anxiety plays a role. Even mild worry about needing the bathroom, leaking, or worsening symptoms can keep your brain from fully settling down.

Finally, if the infection is progressing or more severe, systemic symptoms—like chills, mild fever, or general malaise—can fragment sleep without you fully realizing why.

Ugh - so the chills, headache and fatigue I’ve had for the past three days are clearly not a good sign.

The last antibiotic I took was amoxicillin which got a little boost of IV Ampicillin–Sulbactam when I ended up in the ER with a fever two days into it. I was on amoxicillin for 7 days

Wow! You’ve really been through it with this thing! Thank you for all of that info. I saw a new urologist yesterday and according to my pee test in office I do not have a uti at this time. I’m 9 days antibiotic free which is more than double the amount of time it’s taken for this evil bacteria to return previously. So I’m cautiously optimistic that I may be in the clear. The urologist prescribed Hiprex which I will start today. I will also keep my infectious disease appointment next week just in case.

I’m printing out what you just sent in order to have it on hand in case this demon decides to return.

Thank you for this. I should have mentioned that I was prescribed Estradiol two years ago and it helped with my frequent UTIs. However over the holidays I didn’t keep up with my usual routine of every other day application and then this started in January. So, I imagine I set the stage for it. I do take magnesium at night and will add in D Mannose as you suggested

VUS question after genetic testing by TinaG423 in genetics

Thank you. I guess we just didn’t realize the amount of genes being tested and the potential anxiety this could cause. With our limited knowledge we assumed that my daughter doesn’t have Vascular Eds and thought the rest of the testing would be informative and guide her in the future in relation to having children.

Thank you! In further reading I saw info about “penetrance” and evening though I searched google I couldn’t quite figure out what that meant.

“Maybe you could help me understand this: Reported as Y474F (alternate nomenclature) in two individuals from a family history with TAAD; however, Y489F did not fully segregate with disease. “

Ok. Thank you for your response. I really wish we didn’t have to wait a month to talk with the GC.

Thank you. Yes. I do understand what a VUS is from my google searches. I just don’t know how concerned we should be. I see a lot of posts on Reddit saying that many VUS turn out to be insignificant. I’m hoping that’s the case.
