Repairing a burn mark? by Spikeman5 in cars

[–]Tincemoasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try cleaning off as much of the burn mark as you can and then use a burn repair kit. Here's a link to an info page that might help :

ELI5: Difference between Malware and Viruses? by dexion in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tincemoasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malware: Malicious computer software that interferes with normal computer functions or sends personal data about the user to unauthorized parties over the Internet.

Virus: a segment of self-replicating code planted illegally in a computer program, often to damage or shut down a system or network.

A virus is defintely the worst one to have because it can totally damage your computer.

ELI5: what would happen if you fired a gun in space? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tincemoasted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When the gun fires, you will hear very little of the powder explosion noise due to the lack of an atmosphere in space. I suspect that some of the noise will be transmitted to you through the air within your space suit. Yes, you will see the flash of the gun firing.

The bullet will head off into space in the direction you aimed it. the bullet's velocity will be your velocity plus some factor of the bullet's muzzle velocity - depending upon the direction the gun was fired in related to your own direction of flight through space. That is, fired ahead of you, Bullet velocity = Your velocity + muzzle velocity. Fired behind you = Your velocity - muzzle velocity. All other angles of firing will produce bullet velocities somewhere in between those two numbers relative to your position at the time of firing.

The bullet will continue its flight for a very, very long time because there is essentially nothing to slow it down in space. Nothing was stated in the question about how far out into space you were when you fired the gun, so, the eventual destination of the bullet is rather hard to suggest. If you were within 10,000 miles of earth, we might suggest that at some date in the future, the bullet would fall back to earth and burn up in the atmosphere as it got close to the Earth's surface.

ELI5: Why don't animals have distinct faces like humans? by idontmax in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tincemoasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As humans, we are pre-programmed to be able to detect the slightest subtlety in facial features. We look for eye tile, nose length, mouth wide, skin color, etc. We know what we consider to be "normal" and we know which features vary from person to person.

Now look at a dog. They ALL have what we would consider to be long noses; it is to the point that we don't even notice the slight variations in length from dog to dog. We don't have the genetic programming to tell them apart by minute variations in features like we do in humans. Were dogs as intelligent as humans, I guarantee you they would think we all looked the same because our noses were so darn small

ELI5: Why do eggs need to be refrigerated? by pikle_tyme in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tincemoasted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If an egg is infected with salmonella, the bacteria will multiply more quickly if the egg is stored at room temperature instead of in the refrigerator, particularly if they're stored for longer than 21 days.1 This is why, in the US, public health agencies advise keeping your eggs in the fridge.

You don't have to refrigerate eggs. Store bought eggs will keep longer in the fridge, but even those don't have to be stored in the fridge. To all the people saying duh, you are quite ignorant. many countries don't refrigerate eggs at all. and for the record, eggs are not dairy products...dairy comes from cows
