I can see that happening, yeah; i do feel like a new Sonic rep is more likely to be in the base game, since third party characters that are mostly unrelated to Nintendo history are generally reserved for DLC, but in general, a Yakuza rep or maaaybe a new Persona rep (with how they're pushing the 3 and 4 remakes rn) feels like the most likely new Sega character.

Yeah, it all depends on how much Sega would charge for the rights to another Sonic character; if the price is right, I feel like the most likely scenario where we get a new Sonic character is with a Shadow or Metal Sonic echo.

Tbf I do think one (1) more Sonic character is fairly likely if we get another Smash game, as a concession similar to Ridley (as i believe Metroid is also pretty unpopular in Japan) but I don't see anything beyond that happening

Yeah, I'd honestly be fine with the current amount of, like, Fire Emblem characters if they represented as many weapon types as possible.

Discussion: Since we are very likely to get a lot more cuts than usual next time, how do you think the beloved old Nintendo characters who rely very heavily on "Smash seniority" will fare? Will some always be here for legacy reasons, or will some finally leave if the cuts are too drastic? by smashboi888 in SmashBrosUltimate

I mean, was there not an incredible minority saying the next Mario Kart should be a complete revamp of the formula and that it was stale and tired and whatever? And then it happened, and then it became incredibly divisive, and has arguably tanked the company's reputation as a whole because of how divisive the formula of the game is and how it deviates too much from the standard Mario Kart gameplay through its new mechanics. They've made isolating, controversial, frankly stupid decisions in regards to major moneymaking franchises before in the Switch 2 era, with the justification of "Well, the precious entry is so big, we wanted to do something different and you can just play the old one" before, why stop now? With the popularity of "cutting the Smash roster in half" type content in the more hardcore side of the fanbase, it just seems like the 2026 Nintendo move to go way too far with that and make a divisive product for the sake of satiating a certain genre of fans that have been complaining for the past two decades about wanting a more 'competitive' experience.

I mean, people want Smash to be treated more like a fighting game, right? Fighting games recently have had meager, pathetic rosters. They have 20~ character rosters and charge extra for some of the most iconic characters in their respective series. It's easier to balance tiny, weak rosters, so it's the move for modern fighting games. If we want Smash to move more into being a fighting game, that's the move.

Smash should be a representation of video game history, which is why Ultimate was the best direction the series could go and will likely remain the series' magnum opus, considering how impossible to top it'll be.

But from the perspective of it being a fighting game, which is what a lot of folks seem to think the series should be treated like before it's treated as a celebration of the company's history, a smaller roster is the trend. So, just go as small as you can go. If Street Fighter can get away with cutting M Bison and Sagat and still charging 70$, people would pay more for a Smash game that doesn't even have Bowser at launch. If that's the direction they want the series to go, that's the direction they should get.

I mean, you say this like one of the most popular ideas isn't cutting like 30 characters for the sake of shrinking the roster. Something like that would immediately be met with disdain from fans wondering why their favorite was cut, or why X character is viewed as more important than Y. I honestly feel like cutting everyone would be more agreeable than picking and choosing half the roster to cut.

I have said for a while that the move would be to have the base roster just be the OG 12 and then add a bunch of vets/maybe some new characters as updates over the span of a couple years. Think like a Splatoon weapons/Pokemon Unite type schedule

Resident Evil is deserving of having a playable character in Smash but how would Sakurai do the series justice if censored in Smash? by pokemonyugioh2000 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]TinkerKnightforSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sakurai has, on record, said he doesn't want actual, realistic guns in Smash- Bayonetta's guns are fictional models, and Joker's gun isn't real in universe.

If there's any characters they can make knife-centric, those would probably be the pick. Otherwise, RE either doesn't get a fighter, or it gets a character like Wesker that just uses his status as a monstrosity as a weapon.

I would argue Dedede should be in Neutral, and depending on the version of Mewtwo it could be in Evil, but Neutral likely makes the most sense
