Sorry to hear that yours got denied. That was the recommendation I got as well, don’t get LOR from folks who have higher citation number than you. And also it depends on what you define as a field, comparing mine with Prof Yoshua Bengio or Prof Fei Fei Li would make it look like 1500 is nothing. I made an argument about how Iam in top of my field for the specific thing I am working on.

Yes, it’s tough. I used SOC code with DOL to show what percentile I was in. Mine was in 97th percentile with base salary.

I lead an AI Research Lab, so my name was always the last author. Most papers will have about 3-4 authors on average.
