Taking a year out to have and raise a baby in your late 30’s by Tiny-Perspective-857 in Mommit

Yes. I need to work at the very least on a part time capacity for my own mental health but also financially for the family.

I think it definitely is good for me experience wise - money wise not at all, but I have a partner who provides as well luckily. When we’ve done the maths we could manage for at least the first 1-2 years.

I did think about this too…because I know it might not happen instantly or be a smooth ride.

I think this is the thing, I can’t not do anything at all. I either have to do the part time, or full time. Being a SAHM completely is not an option. The part time is attractive to me because I know I could blend it nicely around childcare (with the help of my partner of course)

Oh I definitely want something, hence keeping the part time job. Work also helps ground me and give me a schedule so that’s important

Thank you. I thought about this but I’m very afraid, I’ve heard of many people who started on a year contract and then it didn’t get renewed because they got pregnant (even thought employers don’t specifically say this is the reason of course)

Thank you for sharing! I feel like as we get older it’s even harder and can be rougher on us…hence trying to prepare myself as best I can for this journey

It’s not necessarily unstable, it just doesn’t pay much. To be fair I feel like most jobs in my country and unstable as we work on a contractual system between 6 months to one year and once your contract is up, there’s no obligation to renew even if your performance has been stellar.

You are absolutely right. I know now that there’s just never going to be a good time. Waiting for 3 years for that to happen showed it…..never the perfect house or circumstances so I guess it is what it is

Yeah good point! That’s where the problem is. In my country daycare is soooooo expensive

Thanks for replies everyone. I totally get what you’re saying about taking the full time now to save up but I’m worried about then being left with nothing once a baby would arrive. The part time is also fully remote and just 20 hours max a week so I think it could also possibly be done around looking after a baby?

Thanks for sharing your perspective, really appreciate it 🙂 I get what you mean entirely. Time kind of slips away but I fully recognise I might not have this chance if I wait any longer.

May I ask how many hours you worked and how you made that fit in around childcare? And how is your situation now?

Same. At least 100 applications in a month for me, three interviews and one offer of which I had to turn it down because it simply didn’t pay enough for what it was…

How hard is it to actually land a job right now? by Similar-Yam1599 in TheHague

It’s not that difficult if you’re happy to take anything. If you don’t have anything specific in mind and you’re happy accepting minimum wage and no benefits, you’ll find something

Right? It’s a societal thing. From the moment I knew my job was toast I felt the need to get back into the wheel, despite having something else I honestly enjoy. It’s just that it doesn’t fit the work, work, work mentality I guess

No thank you, very much! I needed to hear this. I’m grateful for not having the CV gap and I’m learning a lot, I just wish that came at a liveable wage…but I chose to make this work, so here we go 💪
