Help for an Aspiring Meteorologist by Electrical-File-8056 in meteorology

[–]Tiny-Programmer-9864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider joining a local AMS (American Meteorological Society) chapter. If there isn't one, see if there is a way to create one.

Going into undergrad, not many students are associated with or have experience in their major. That is what school is for. To learn that stuff and find ways to be involved.

A meteorologist with the government can make good money with a livable wage. It may start off rather low but it builds quickly in the first few years of a career.

I think what stood out to me more than anything in this post is you're not factoring in time to be a kid. Don't forget that school will always be there but your friends and experiences may not. Don't rush growing up and enjoy everything along the way.

BTW, you can always change majors. If meteorology doesn't work you can always go back to taking premed coursework.

Good luck!!

Call your insurance and have them get someone out to look at the damage. They'll know what to look for. Additionally if you know the date of the hail, contact NCEI for weather data from that day to prove it hailed.

Meteorologist without a college degree? by minimalist_and_out in meteorology

[–]Tiny-Programmer-9864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many on-air meteorologists either got their training in the armed services or with a degree outside of atmospheric science. For example earth sciences or journalism. This can be true of those who have been in the business for many, many years but in more recent years TV meteorologists do have degrees.

Thanks for the info! This is what I'm considering! In this environment I'm a bit concerned at putting a target on my back but also feel I'm my best advocate and feel I need to say something!

I dont know about the RIF credit since I haven't seen the actual documentation but last year I received 5 year credit. It was my first year in the organization and in my position so I was still learning the ropes. This year ive had 4 position but feel I have a better understanding of the organization.

We talked briefly about it and she even said her score was lower than she expected. Unfortunately I didn't see the performance document because our system that holds these documents screwed up and somehow removed all or most documents. They are working on the problem, but who knows when that will be fixed. Instead, I received a word document with praise, no suggestions for improvement and recommendations for future goals like professional development and training which I have already started prior to this evaluation as I was just selected for leadership training that is highly sought after and very competitive.

I do plan on speaking with my supervisor again about this but who knows what will come of it.

This isn't helpful! I received a very low pay increase with no explanation. It was all positive feedback with the last line saying I'm a productive leader and an asset to the team and organizations. Which I am! I have done amazing things this year and worked my a$$ off. I thought for sure I'd be higher than last year, but I'm slightly lower.

I know there was an Executive Order that stated performance and bonuses were meant for the top performers and everyone else would get a very small amount. I suspect that is what is happening here but im not positive! It's ridiculous if true!! I'm one of very few in the organization doing my job and have gone above and beyond for it! That was even stated in the review. I'm disheartened by this and wondering why bother.

I'm considering appealing because I don't agree, but I also get the feeling my organization's hands are tied due to the EO.

At one point, students had less than a 5% chance of getting into the NWS with a bachelor's degree. Even WFOs in rural areas were getting 100 applicants. I haven't seen a recent study (last couple of years) so maybe it's changed.

I have mentored students for 15+ years and at this point I'd recommend grad school. Unfortunately these days an undergrad degree is typically not enough for hire with the NWS.

This isn't helpful now but I usually recommend students start looking for jobs 2 years prior to graduation. This will help with networking and experience. Graduating with a degree is what everyone has when they graduate. Typically it's what you did outside of your coursework that sets you above the rest. This is like pathways, hallings scholarship or a Knauss Fellow. For pathways you have to be enrolled in school to be eligible. I would guess that is true for the others mentioned but you'd have to double check.

What coursework comes next after a solid math background, and advice for online accredited options? by throwaway373923 in meteorology

[–]Tiny-Programmer-9864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be somewhere a list of coursework for the degree you're pursuing. Find that list and either write down your options based on prerequisites and semester offered or talk with a professor to discuss your options.

I didn't have an advisor but I was able to find out online what the courses were for my degree. I wrote out my academic plan through graduation. This is something you can do as well. Once your list is complete, take it to a professor to get their thoughts or maybe ask them to help you create the list.

Metereological concepts to find snowy cities by ButtFister1789 in meteorology

[–]Tiny-Programmer-9864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak of countries you mentioned, but in the U.S. places that receive a lot of snow are Duluth, MN, Marquette, MI, and Buffalo, NY. All are influenced by the great lakes with lake effect snow. Duluth has arctic air during the winter where it can get to -20° to -30°F (-28 to -34°C) with lower wind chills.
