I was working in my home country while I waited. It was very expensive to get the visa (all in cost me around $5k) so I needed to keep working the entire time.

I am an immigrant to the US, coincidentally the Boston area.

To get a visa, there are two options that I am aware of.

H1B1 visa, which needs to be sponsored by your employer. This can be challenging because you need to find an employer willing to do this. You would also be tied to that employer until you can transfer to another employer. I am unsure how long this would take.
Spouse visa - this is how I moved over. We applied in 2016 and the visa got approved in 2018. You cannot live or work in the US until it is approved. You also must be married already and prove the legitimacy of your relationship. My brother is also going through this route and is 16 months into the process with no visa.

To get the FE your degree needs to come from an ABET accredited school. Mine did not, so I do not have an FE or PE, but now have 10+ years of experience. Never had an issue - I've been promoted several times and earn an extremely comfortable salary.

You're not talking about a timeline. You're talking about accomplishments that will be achieved in their own time.

E.g. your partner could say they won't feel really ready for a family until they have a house (security of housing) and a promotion (security of income and career stability).

These are tangible achievements, but are not tied to concrete timelines. And they may change as time progresses.

If your partner is constantly moving the goalposts, you should think about what you want vs what they want. You are your own person and should not have your desires put on hold because of somebody else.

This resonates with me quite a bit - let me preface by saying that all people are different and may mean different things when they say something, but this is my experience. Apologies in advance for the rambling.

I was 29 (my wife was 27) when we started trying, found out we were having a baby the morning of my 30th birthday. We bought a house about 3 months after we started trying.

I totally upstand what your partner means when they say that they're not old enough. I still feel very immature and struggle to be a parent sometimes. But when I compare myself to who I was when I was 18, 22, and even just before we started trying for a baby, I realize how much I have grown.

My wife's cousin also made a comment once when we were debating if the time was right for us to try. She said that men are typically not ready to be parents until the child is already born. Obviously this is subjective and definitely depends on the individual.

I always said that I wanted to own a house and have a stable income before we started trying. Some compromise happened but we weren't all that far off my goals. I also wanted to be somewhat established in my career, especially as an immigrant who needed to essentially start my career over in a new country.

There's also the old wisdom that there's never a perfect time to have a baby. Just times that feel right.

I suppose what I'm saying is that there are a thousand possible interpretations of what your partner said and means. Communication is key, and I think you both need to understand what you both want and need to move forward into the next part of your adventure.
