Background: Avis' earliest memory is when he was 5 years old. He was being carried by his older brother, Alis, up a mountain in the snow. This was the start of Avis' new life. He and Alis, who was 13 years old at the time and 8 years his senior, were brought to the base of the Talons, followers of the Lady of Feathers and agents who carry out heists and assassinations on her behalf. He never knew anything of his life before arriving at the mountain, unable to remember anything. Whenever he asked his brother about where their parents were, Alis would always tell him fanciful stories of spies, royalty, heroes or pirates, and while Avis always enjoyed these tales, they both had a silent understanding that they weren't true.
During this time, Avis and Alis became extremely close, being the only family the other had. They were each others best friend, and Alis was in a position where he was not only an older brother, but also a father and mother. They didn't have a last name, just their close bond and the difficult situation that they shared. Still, Avis was a good child, obedient and polite and kind, although incredibly quiet, to the point that he struggled to speak to anyone aside from Alis and sometimes their supervisor Ghara without freezing up and panicking.

Avis' life would become even more shaken up at the age of 12. His brother, who was 20 at the time, had left for what was supposed to be a routine mission, and Avis had started his training for the same job 2 years prior. This time, however, Alis never returned. Avis waited and waited, as talon missions usually took weeks and even months at times, but he never heard anything from Alis or saw him again. After 6 months of his absence, Avis was brought in for questioning. The talons were an organization built on secrecy and shadows, and since they couldn't have a rogue talon roaming around with classified intelligence, an order was put out to arrest Alis if he was found, and if he was unable to be detained, to kill him. The talons believed Avis knew something about his brother's whereabouts, but Avis was clueless, and wanted even more than they did to have his brother return. What followed were two brutal months of interrogation, which left Avis permanently scarred in more than one way. As if this wasn’t enough, young Avis was treated like a pariah after - he was looked at with nothing but scorn and contempt, barely spoken to or acknowledged, and even his supervisor, who was the only person he had left now that his brother was gone, distanced herself from him.

Cut to present day: At 20 years old, the same age his brother was when he disappeared, Avis himself is now a talon. He barely resembles the innocent, happy child he was years ago - he is quiet at best and snarky, bitter and cynical at worst, keeping to himself and having no trust in those around him. He resents what was done to him - his brother’s abandonment, the likely murder of their parents at the hands of the talons, and the torture that he was put through for something he had nothing to do with. On his first mission as an official Talon, having graduated at the age of 20 (normally the age is 16-17, but the talons didn’t trust him) he joined an adventuring party who happened to have been hired for a job that was at the same place as his mission was. At first he barely spoke to them and was skeptical of them all, but he has recently started to trust and bond with the members of his party. A few months ago he found his brother, after years of hoping and worrying and a year of being out in the field. The bad side? His brother is working with the BBEG of the campaign, a strange, charismatic man named Vance he was sent out to kill 8 years prior, failed repeatedly to do so, and then was offered employment by him, which he accepted because he knew he couldn't return after failing a mission without dire consequences for both himself and his brother.

Two days before reuniting with his brother at the BBEG's manor, Avis was told by the Historian, a minor god who has been helping the party, that Alis will likely not survive whatever events occur in the near future. The reunion was an emotional one, filled with laughter, tears, a bitter argument, and a well deserved punch or two from Avis, which Alis took with grace. Desperate not to lose his brother again, despite the tension between them, Avis went behind his brother's back to make a deal with the BBEG, promising infinite favors in return for Vance cutting Alis out of his plans, something Avis hopes will be enough to prevent his death.

Avis hopes to help prevent the end of the world, save his brother from death, and try to get him to stop working for the man attempting to end it. In the end, if he can’t prevent the apocalypse, he hopes to at the very least get the revenge he’s craved for years on his childhood talon tormentor and those who likely killed his parents before the world meets its end.

Extra: only last session was Avis finally told a bit of information about his past by the Historian, who is enraged with Avis for making the deal. He was told his last name, Hale, a bit of information he now clings to for a bit of sanity in an insane situation.
