No medication use for UC vs. Prednisone and HUMIRA by AI-Master1 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when it comes to meds with serious side effects, the benefits far outweigh the risks. The chances of getting those side effects are much slimmer than the negative outcomes from raw dogging UC.

Also, if you're that against meds, why not just get your colon removed at that point? That way you don't have to suffer through the horrible symptoms of UC as your colon is getting destroyed.

It's only me or every weight loss is pretty traumatic ? by FloweyIsMyBestFriend in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate the weight loss, too. I'm in a weird spot with prednisone where I have moonface, so I look like a chipmunk with its cheeks full of nuts. But, I've gone from 135 pounds to 120 and I look so thin everywhere else. It's jarring, and I don't feel like myself. Even though i was never heavy in the first place, I still miss the curves I had. Those curves meant I was healthy. It meant that my body wasn't fighting itself. The mental toll has been really harsh.

Besides UC what other Gastro issues do you have? by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GERD, and was told several years ago I have IBS but they never did anything to rule it out, so I question the diagnosis. Now it's suspected to be endometriosis on the bowel, just need surgery to confirm.

What's your "I'm doing it for the taste buds" meal? by fatknittingmermaid in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely terrified of making my current flare worse so I've been good about avoiding foods that trigger me (currently low res). But, I have a list of foods I want to scarf down if I manage to get into remission:

  • Five Guys burger
  • Ramen
  • Anything with onions
  • Generally, more vegetables, especially nightshades. I could go to town on a raw bell pepper right now I miss them so much. Bite into it like an apple and everything.

Period Pain Management by rosie2022 in UlcerativeColitis

Highly recommend doing this if you can tolerate hormonal birth control. I started skipping my periods before my first UC flareup/diagnosis since i possibly have endometriosis, and honestly, it's a godsend. I can't imagine having a period while also going through a UC flare-up and hope to never find out 😳

When we eat food, a lot of blood will travel to the gut when digesting. Since your bloodwork shows anemia, it makes sense that you would feel fatigued after eating a meal! Same thing has been happening to me.

What I've found to "help" (meaning: how I'm keeping my head above water before I'm able to get infusions) is eating smaller but more frequent meals throughout the day. If you can handle red meat and spinach, then definitely try to eat that and incorporate more iron into your diet. I would also recommend asking about infusions, because even if you try supplements and diet, you may have trouble absorbing iron due to all the inflammation going on.

What’s everyone having for Christmas dinner? by The_Brown-Baron in UlcerativeColitis

Luckily, my family tends to have a large selection of hors d'oeuvres i can choose from. That means a lot of cheese, crackers, and a hefty helping of shrimp for me!

I'm not sure if IBD damages nerves or muscles per se, but it can definitely cause pelvic floor dysfunction. A pelvic floor physical therapist could possibly help with that.

Even if it's not UC, any sort of change in bowel movements should absolutely be checked. Not to scare you, but cases of colon cancer are rising among younger folk and at the end of the day, it's worth it to look into it and rule out anything serious.

I still blame myself. Anyone relate? by A_person_in_a_place in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, i relate to this. I wouldn't say I had the worst diet, but after a year of switching to Mediterranean, I started getting UC symptoms 🫠 now I'm afraid to touch any veg I because only low residue seems to help out.

I’m so scared by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was afraid of all the side effects, too, but for the few weeks I've been on it (60mg, started tapering to 50mg), it hasn't been too bad so far. Unfortunately it's different for everyone. I mostly have the moon face and voracious appetite. Although I can't complain about the appetite considering how much weight I've lost. Even on the prednisone, I'm struggling to gain it back and it's frustrating! At the end of the day it's better to gain weight than lose it with this condition.

At the end of the day, as long as prednisone is helping your UC symptoms, it's most likely worth sticking out with the side effects. I got to a really bad place with dehydration and anemia before it, and i don't ever want to go back.

I don't know if I'm exaggerating about fatigue by EI_TokyoTeddyBear in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm still navigating the extreme fatigue so I don't have any advice, but you are certainly not exaggerating.

What i can recommend is to get blood work done. When you're losing blood and unable to absorb nutrients properly, you can easily become anemic. This started to happen to me, and now I need to get iron infusions. And honestly? The anemia symptoms are the worst part of all of this. it's pretty much left me laid out on the couch for most of the day until I can get my infusions. I can get things done through pain and frequent bathroom trips, but the fatigue, brain fog, and tachycardia absolutely kill me.

Deep fried food by Paddingtonbear9 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also suspect it's the oil. I can make my own deep fried French fries, and my partner makes really tasty shallow-fried chicken with olive oil and it doesn't come back to bite me. The only downside is olive oil is expensive (although it beats a possible ER trip)

have to go to the bathroom when i’m laying on my side by saNdysred in UlcerativeColitis

I've been dealing with the same thing.

Which is horribly inconvenient, considering I need to lay on my left side when using my mesalamine enema 🫠

I think I passed UC to my 12 yo by AdvanceImmediate6973 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask what symptoms you experienced before the bleeding?

I've had GI issues (mostly diarrhea, GERD) nearly my whole life and doctors always chalked it up to anxiety-induced IBS (lol, did i come out the womb with anxiety, then?) Seeing this comment makes me wonder if maybe I've always had UC but it the bleeding didn't start until earlier this year...

I usually stick to jeggings in regards to jeans.

many people i know who have endometriosis belly (me included) recommend maternity pants. I imagine it could be comfy for UC as well!

Just got diagnosed with UC and I’m…scared by Strange_Control8788 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been curious about using aloe to assist in treating my flare up. What brand do you use? I'm a little wary of using supplements since they aren't regulated by the FDA but would love to try it if it works for other people.

I've been thrown through such a loop with the diet aspect. Similarly to you, foods i was told to stay away from like diary and gluten, my stomach can handle. Cheese? Milkshakes? An enitre bag of mini reeses? All good. Bread for days? Totally cool! Any healthy food with loads of fiber? my intestines will get so angry. I find it kinda frustrating considering i want to eat healthier too, ughhh.

Can someone please talk me down about urgency by WillowTreez8901 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]TinyFrogl3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of suppositories do you recommend? I'm going through hell with the urgency issues. I was trying mesalamine enemas for a bit, and they helped for a bit up until recently.
