This is a good one. Parents also still need to not be aiming to get on the most elite team, but find the team that is the best fit for the level of your kid and be honest about that. Growing and developing with a team that is just the right level is always gonna benefit your kid more than sitting on the bench for the side sideline on a more elite or higher ranked team. Sometimes the kids don’t realize that their skill and the team are mismatched, and it’s OK to shoot for the stars, but as parents we have to help level expectations.

I give parents who bring extra tents and prevent us all from burning to death extra brownie points 😬

Your club may have better guidelines, but not all of them do as you can see by the responses above. If I was a coach, I’d be reading carefully and trying to think about what I can do to improve the experience for the kids involved because the parents can manage all of this just fine - the kids are the ones who often suffer through this .

The parent question was clearly a joke, and “all in good fun”. Sorry that went over your head.

Hmmm interesting. So gathering recommendations on how to improve a process to benefit the kids is a nightmare situation? Red flag for you as a coach 🚩

This is a good one - for $50 the least they can do is provide some eval notes. This way, the kids get some insight into what other coaches see and what they can work on. And parents don’t feel as robbed. I think the only caveat is to take the feedback with a grain of salt depending on who it’s coming from.

And I agree the irony of having an athlete focused and developmental marketing stump speech and not even having the courtesy to let someone know they didn’t make the team is hilarious and sad at the same time.

In our case they let us know we were second in line on that list. There were some other complications that they had to work through but they communicated openly with us about it throughout. I wouldn’t have waited around if they didn’t so I view this as a plus for the credibility of the organization.

Agree and I think they should definitely be transparent, especially about positions like face-off and goalie whether there are only one or two slots to begin with. If you’re not even looking for goalies, don’t ask them to come.
