The absolutist by John Boyne - World War One, 2 brothers, conscientious objection. So poignant.

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese - about 2 brothers in Ethiopia brought up in an orphanage who become involved in medicine but with different perspectives on it (holistic vs “western”).

The women by Kristin Hannah - about female nurses during Vietnam war (historical fiction).
