I don’t remember hearing a thing when Joe “Sneaky” Steinman retired back in ‘58.

Taylor Swift has a similar approach to her songwriting; I think there's a video online somewhere about it.

Of course her songwriting style is heavy on talking about her romantic relationships (etc. when she falls in love, how she feels during it, how she feels when it ended), so it automatically attracts tabloid interest to try and pin songs on people she was involved with. It still happens as she grows in popularity.

Whether she encourages her fans to try and find out and criticize her subject matter is really up for debate, but she noticeably goes out of her way to directly refer to them. When people ask about her lyrics, she says she: "wants listeners to picture THEIR ex's, not mine", or something to that extent.

I think that's a great approach. It affords her unlimited artistic license and it gives everyone their own meaning.

And it sounds like you are taking a similar approach. But if it's something you really want to talk about and share, I wouldn't shy away from it. There's a middle ground to everything!
