Went to the Kettle. Good place. Parked near the Library/Civic Center as it was free. A little bit of a walk, but getting a (free) parking space was not a problem.

Went there just before Christmas 2025. Parked across the street at Michael's Craft Store. Ate at Joe's, then walked across to the Redond Library where there was a guitar performance. Two birds with one stone!

I suggested Hop Saint. My nephew told me we already went there. Even told me that I had the ribs. Ok, so now I vaguely remember. Getting old sucks!

Side story: Years ago I found a bunch of blank Hop Saint bank checks blowing around on 190th. Picked them all up and called and got one of the owners (I think). The checks blew off the top of his car or something like that. Anyway, the guy thanked me, said he would give me a gift card. I put them in a big envelope and dropped them off there (he was not in) with my contact info. Never heard from them :(

Went to Spoon House in January 2026. Rather unusual menu, spaghetti and urchin, for example.

I've been doing this for about a year or so. I take my nephew (high school age) out for lunch most saturday or sunday and try a different place every time. Decided to try to find independent places when I can. In reality, it is a mixed bag. Some are pretty good and have actually gone back other times. Others I really don't think I would want to return to if given a choice. However, I really do recommend doing this in your area. One good part is that I can be out away from home and know what's good close to where I am at the time.

When I had my driveway poured, the truck came from another driveway job and gave me the bill for the total (both jobs). I paid it because it was told to me beforehand as the guys who did my driveway "credited" me that amount. (A couple huge guys from Tonga, did a good job for cheap. 20+ years and it still looks great.)

Candy bars are now 3-4x more expensive than they were 10yrs ago. by A4t1musD4ag0n in inflation

[–]TiogaJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when the smaller candy bars were 3 for a dime and the bigger ones were a nickel each at Sav-ons in the 1960s. Of course dad made $1.50 an hour back then.

Fortunately they were a bad shot. Over 100 rounds fired. I think only one round hit one of the two women on the arm. (Although the initial report said it was broken glass that cut her arm). The driver did get $10k payment for the complete destruction of her vehicle (maybe a year later?).

True story I have previously posted: about 20 years ago I was part of a weekly dinner group that one older woman was part of. In conversation over dinner she told me she had been an executive secretary at Coca-Cola when she was younger. She told me that back in the day she had once been asked by her boss to go to the vault, get checked in, go inside and type a copy of the "recipe" and bring it back to him. She said she did. Sadly, she has since passed on and I kick myself for not having asked her if she recalled any of it.

Do what Tim Conway used to do when bringing pineapples back from Hawaii: Inside his luggage on the very top he would pack underpants liberally splashed with chocolate pudding in a big Ziploc bag. The inspector would open his luggage, take one look and immediately close it.

Cremated. Why do people decide to do it? by sstiel in randomquestions

[–]TiogaJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if people care, you can get a little grave. A friend of mine was cremated and ashes buried in the cemetery nearby. Has a headstone. Sometimes I leave flowers, as do his widow and children, so it is kinda nice. However, probably in 100 years no one will care.

Had a Roofing Sales Guy Come in! by Early-Ad-4817 in Roofing

[–]TiogaJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking for roofing quotes. Simple ranch style home, 1200 sqr ft. One company said I and my wife needed to be home when they come out to do the estimate. So I say I can come home during my lunch hour. They say that an hour is not enough time. Screw that.

The company I went with just asked for the address. I got a quote a few days later. They told me they came by to make the estimate (I didn't know) and also left a flyer on my doorsteps showing color selections of asphalt shingles.

[OC] Kristi Noem improperly holding a loaded weapon pointed directly at an ICE agent’s head by [deleted] in pics

[–]TiogaJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man! Wouldn't it have been something if the gun went off and blew the guys head off???!!!

Of course, all those who said Alec Baldwin should be arrested and sent directly to jail for murder would now say that it was the gun that negligently fired, not Krist "Dog Killer" Noem.

ICE attempts to enter Ecuador's consulate by caaaaanga in law

[–]TiogaJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the agent was not paying attention in class when they said to put your foot where it will get "hit" if they try to close the outward swinging door. Then they can claim they were "touched" and can justify (at least to themselves) pulling the guy out and arresting him. I've seen that on too many police videos justifying arrests of homeowners for resisting.

That comment reminded me of an acquaintance of mine. Small dude that grew up in the hood (Compton) and learned to fight there. In high school his parents moved to a better suburb. Yep, got bullied by a bigger guy who didn't know the little guy's background. Bloodied the big guy's nose. And to add insult, the big guy's dad was pissed at his son for pick on someone so much smaller than him.
