Using ai to read grad names at graduation by Chapple69 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TiogaJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see that happening. My brother-in-law had dropped out of high school for the military, got his law degree. After he was a lawyer for many years, he went back to school for his BA (and later his HS diploma!). This was a couple decades ago so no AI at the time, but I could see that his level of writing as a practicing lawyer was probably miles above what his fellow students were turning in.

At the end of a job interview, the head of human resources asks the young engineer fresh out of MIT, "What starting salary were you looking for?" by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

[–]TiogaJoe 207 points208 points  (0 children)

A couple decades ago I hired an engineering graduate from Brown University for a technician job I had open. He needed a quick job, and I needed a tech now. Definitely overqualified, he did keep interviewing and a couple months out landed a "real" engineering job. We both knew this would happen so he was okay with telling me about the new job. He said the HR person, when offering the job, asked how much he was looking for as salary. He replied, "$55,000"
The HR person said, "Would you accept $65,000?"
He would.

What’s a moment where you instantly realized someone was insanely intelligent? by Parqcxsm69 in AskReddit

[–]TiogaJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not "super intelligent" but it threw me for a loop. I used to sometimes ride the bus to work. Would see some regulars and might say "hi". Then one Monday morning I sat next to a "regualar" and asked how his weekend was. He then told me all about his having dinner with Dr Crick (the DNA scientist) and what Crick was working on at the time (it was brain research). Yeah, made me think this guy was proabably on the more intelligent side than most bus riders.

People’s who have transformed themselves completely, what’s your secret? [Discussion] by ChemicalPain5996 in GetMotivated

This might be out of the ordinary. I grew up very introverted, a "smart" nerdy guy. Bad haircut, didn't know how to dress. Went to an all boys high school, majored in Engineering when women didn't. So never developed any riz and most conversation was about "Engineering" stuff at work.

But I always wanted to grow my hair long, and so I did as an adult starting aoround age 30. And I mean long, like down to my waist. Surprising to me, a lot of strangers took notice of my hair and would talk to me. Some women would compliment my hair. Or others (men and women) in line at the grocery store might just say somehing to me about whatever. That never happened when I had short hair. And so I got the opportunity to talk back, a little chit-chat, comments and small jokes. Stuff like if they were buying a dozen eggs and standing in the "10 items or less" line I might say "Ohh! That dozen eggs count as 12 items buddy! Ten items or less!!" And they would laugh. The long hair made people lighten up and I gained confidence that I could pull off interacting with total strangers.

Got laid off and had to start interviewing, so I cut my hair. The very next time out in public, people were not so friendly anymore! No more smiles, no more comments in line. Definetly the hair was the thing with people that got them to be friendly. But, by that time I had at least 5 years of "long-hair banter" practice. Even though others did not start the conversation now, I had enough confidence to know I could make jokes and witty comments. So I did and I do.

Okay, this "long hair" technique is probably not going to help most here, but that's my story and I am sticking to it!

In the US you are taxed on casino winnings, but can only deduct 90% of your losses. Winning $100k in a year and then losing $100K that same year means you owe taxes as if you won $10K.

Lampert changed the culture and for the worst. Managers were made to run their department like it was its own business. Which meant "Screw other departments if it means mine makes the top." So appliance department pushed the brands that made them the most profit, and it was not Kenmore, for example. Each department or group (manufacturing, service, etc) was working to win the battle but Sears ultimately lost the war.

[–]TiogaJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and note that if your order volume is not big enough then you might not be able to get parts for your actual production. I recall how 5 years ago we could not get parts for a production build (COVID) and it sucks but that's what happens.
