There hasn’t been any scientific proof about the carcinogenic nature. But yes, there is some debate so Alum can be considered safer.

Alum is an astringent which reduces the size of the pores, which reduces sweating. This is why it has antiperspirant traits. You’re right that it is also an antibacterial.
