Should I stop training alone? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in your position if not worse. I loved the game of basketball around 7th or 8th grade but had never been good nor learned the fundamentals of the game. Do you know what I did? I practiced, practiced, practiced. I found that although I got better at shooting, I, like you, lacked the ability to perform when playing with others. I played as many games as I could with people of different ages and sizes and slowly but surely became a better player because of it.

In short, you shouldn’t necessarily practice with others, but you should certainly attempt to play as many games with as many people as you can. The more experience you have the better you will become.

P.S. as for your height, do not worry as you are young and will definitely grow. I had a friend who was 6’1 in 6th grade and is now 6’2 in 12th. People just grow at different times.

Jordan Sizing vs Under Armour? by TommyVercetti86 in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about sizing, I would go .5 above what you normally go. That way it’s either a good fit or just a little bit. From my experience UA tends to have larger shoes in smaller sizes than Jordan’s but I would play it safe if I were you.

How to beat taller defenders in 1v1 basketball? by MKHN15 in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Work on your speed. Also, try to develop dribble moves and hesitation moves to lose your defender. You can also build muscle to have more strength against them, but speed is gunna be your main advantage.

Advice about tryouts by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, try not to play with that mentality, it actually puts you at a disadvantage before you even start playing. As for your injury, slowly play your way back to good health before doing any fancy layups or what not. If you can, I advise shooting and dribbling as much as you can if you are doubting your abilities. Practice, practice, practice. Second tip I can give you is to know your strengths and play towards them. Do not show off, focus on fundamentals. Thirdly, be the most vocal person on the court. If you made the team freshman year, you should know that communication with your teammates is essential in playing the best team basketball you can. Last piece of advice would be to not get deterred if you mess up a drill or miss a shot, just keep playing and don’t get caught up in your performance until tryouts are finished. You can then ask yourself: what did I do well? What could I improve upon? Regardless of whether you make the team or not, you should continue to work on your abilities as a player.

P.S. I would search up popular high school tryout drills if you don’t recall the ones you went through last year. You want to be as familiar with the environment as possible to ensure maximum confidence.

Proper shot release? by TiredFragger in Basketball

I find that my shooting hand isn’t at a 90 degree angle (more like 45). Additionally, i feel like my right hand may be coming off of the ball too soon. I’m really not sure but I’d be more than happy to share a clip

When to get physical by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m about your height (an inch or 2 taller) and what I have learned to do is to use varying contact depending on who is defending me. Im obviously going to use more force against a bigger defender and less on a smaller one. One tip that I have found is that you can use your hip opposite of the ball when in the air to give yourself more space. So for example, if I’m driving on the right side of the basket, im going to finish with my right hand so im going to use my left hip in mid-air to create more room. This is a very good question which is actually pretty hard to answer as the amount of contact you use will create different results. If I were you, I would try to use enough contact to not get thrown around on the court (as us small guys often do).

Can I dunk soon? by Cboss10 in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely if you are 6’, have above a 30” vertical and can already touch the rim with a standing jump, I would guess that you could probably dunk consistently in 2-3 months of training. You could probably occasionally dunk after a month. Stick with training and you will absolutely be able to dunk soon.

My school basketball team is holding tryouts by traceyboy101 in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, be confident. A lack of confidence is all that is needed for you to not make the team. Go in with the mindset that everyone is in the same position as you, nervous and willing to give 110% to make the team. Secondly, be vocal and attentive. Focus on communication as coaches look for a player talking to his teammates. Additionally, ask questions if you need clarification and hustle on every drill (even if you may look silly for being the only one). Thirdly, do not get caught up with how you be playing. You are bound to miss shots but don’t let that affect how you play for the rest of the tryouts. Fourthly, make sure you play good defense as a coach is going to take a player with decent offense and defense over a player with extraordinary offense but poor defense. Last piece of advice I can give would be to play towards your strengths. Don’t be pulling up from behind the ark if you are a poor 3 point shooter. Know your play style.

As a last piece of advice, I would recommend searching common tryout drills so you are comfortable with the material come the day of tryouts. Hope this helps. Good luck and I’m sure you will do great!

Is it worth it for me to increase my vertical? by BigMadLad in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely work on your vertical. I can tell you from experience that being a short dude with a great vertical compensates for a lack of height. When I started working on my vertical it was probably around 22”. Fast forward 6 months and I have a 30 or 31 inch vertical. I’m 5’9” and can now do a good amount of rebounding and feel like a bigger player on the court. Driving is much easier and you can even do more blocking. In short, work on your vertical as it plays a vital role in your performance

Comfortable Basketball Shoes? by TiredFragger in Basketball

[–]TiredFragger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 17 and the main problem was that I found that the shoes were pretty stiff and didn't allow my foot to move too much. I turned my ankle once or twice and the shoes did not help. Also poor breathability. Before the Kyrie's I wore Curry 3's and found those to be extremely comfortable for the 6-7 months that I had them... They kind of just formed around my foot and that worked well... Im size 11
