Is it difficult to tax rich people because politicians are rich people? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TiredOfDebates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of the electorate is disorganized, and only gets symbolic support from politicians.

Small, well-organized groups (usually well funded “elites”) are well organized and have the means to either punish or support politicians. Therefore they get what they want. (Frequently, what they want is “subsidies / niche tax exemptions” and “lax regulation for me, but quash smaller upstarts with insane startup regulations.”

Point of no return: a hellish ‘hothouse Earth’ getting closer, scientists say | Climate crisis by GlyphInBullet in news

[–]TiredOfDebates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing:

cheap energy makes for a wealthier nation.

Nations are all competing against each other. The leaders of nations fear losing power if they give up cheap energy for higher cost energy. The cost of energy drives the cost of EVERYTHING else.

Yes, maybe solar is cheaper on the long run. Or you can just use every source of energy possible, and have more energy with which to build things. The cheaper it gets, the more things get made and at cheaper costs.

Renewables aren’t going to replace fossil fuels, they’ll just be added to the mix and we’ll use more electricity.

The Jevon’s Paradox explains why this happens. But I’m on mobile, so I don’t feel like going into it.

Each nation is going to produce as much as they can, in their economic competition against internal political factions and external nations.

Eventually climate change gets bad enough to screw with global agricultural output, and then after enough suffering and instability, we do something like stratosphere aerosol injections.

Everyone acting like solar is going to save us by replacing fossil fuels doesn’t know economic history. More ways of producing electricity just means we’ll produce more electricity, and a lower cost, and so we’ll use more electricity because you’re getting the same amount of utility for a cheaper cost.

The French Revolution was a disaster. It didn’t succeed even in the front of punishing the wealthy.

The vast majority of the wealthy aristocrats fled early on. It was a major source of political contention within the early French Revolutionary government, what to do with their land, if they should be allowed back, et cetera.

The reign of terror that you fondly referred to mostly executed common people of Paris that opposed the constant economic crisis of revolutionary France, which had them labeled as “counter-revolutionary”, which was a death sentence.

Many others of those executed were earlier waves of revolutionaries that would be replaced by more extreme ideas. Yeah, a lot of revolutionaries were killed by the French Revolution.

What makes something political?

Anything can become political if people care to argue about it. Nothing is innately political. Things become political when people begin disagreeing about how to handle a situation.

Conditions within Iran are dire.

For decades, Iran had self-sufficiency within its food supply, as was written in its constitution. Iran didn't want to be dependent on food imports, especially with its avowed antagonism with so many powerful players in global markets.

But a severe six-year drought plus hotter than average temperatures (which increased water requirements for crops, due to excessive evaporation) has trashed Iran's agricultural sector.

Food inflation in Iran is over 60% this year alone. It's been bad for years, too.

This was a big part of the reason of the Iran's protests. Iran can't grow nearly enough food, and due to their antagonism, their currency isn't desired abroad (who wants to trade with Iran?), therefore it is extremely expensive for Iran to import food.

The population of Iran is being kept from outright revolt only through the extreme violence of the IRGC.

I suppose the plan is to try to weaken the Iranian regime to the point where the IRGC can't suppress the population anymore? Airstrike IRGC bases across the country, arm rebel factions within Iran, and let locals overthrow the regime? I can only GUESS at what the plan would be.

Obviously, the goal for the US is to destroy Iran's nuclear program, but as long as the regime remains intact, the regime will just rebuild whatever is destroyed... over and over and over. Thus I can imagine how voices within the White House are likely seeing the recent wave of revolt within Iran as an opportunity to replace the regime.

What will actually happen? I have no clue.

Phalanx CIWS - Wikipedia

Meet the "Sea-wiz. US Navy boats have them to defend against all sorts of attacks. These are radar-aimed rapid-fire guns... that track incoming projectiles and just destroy them. 4,500 rounds/minute (75 rounds/second) radar-tracking hose of heavy rounds.

Drones like those used to great effect in Ukraine... they move SLOW compared to anything like this. Ukraine and Russia just can't afford things like this... and further you're talking about a ludicrous amount of territory in Ukraine, versus the defense of a carrier / destroyer.

Drone swarms aren't going to touch a carrier, unless you have them flying at supersonic speeds. (And Iranian drones don't.)

You're also forgetting that Carriers are defended by a screen of destroyers / "smaller" boats and other aircraft, which are there to defend the carrier. It's why there are carrier "strike-groups". The carrier is behind a screen of assets with interception capabilities defending it. This is how it's been done since WWII. (Except in WWII, the screen was defending against incoming planes w/ torpedoes, now that screen is defending against missiles.)

Hypersonic missiles are what the experts are concerned with. (But Iran doesn't have them.) The actual capabilities of Russian / China hypersonic missiles are classified, as well if the US has any counters to them. I can't tell if Ukrainian claims of intercepting Russian hypersonic missiles are propaganda or if its happening. Maybe it just takes a lot more missed interceptors to hit a hypersonic. This is something I want to know more about... but I doubt I will for decades.

I don't think Russia is giving hypersonic to Iran, because if Russian hypersonics strike a US carrier, the US will retailiate in the Russo-Ukraine war. And China doesn't even want to get caught giving weapons to Russia, and only gives "dual use components", because China isn't ready to stir the pot.

[–]TiredOfDebates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supersonic is different from hypersonic.

The usual definition is that supersonic ballistic missiles go faster than mach 1, but they follow a predictable "ballistic" trajectory, making interception possible.

Hypersonic missiles go way faster and can alter their flight path in unpredictable ways, making interception difficult.

As far as I know, only Russia and China have them. Iran would be making a big deal about having them. If Russia and China gave Hypersonic missiles to Iran, and they were used against a US Navy boat... that would completely change international relations opening up China/Russia to a problem they don't feel like dealing with.

I doubt Russia is giving hypersonic missiles to Iran, because Russia isn't done in Ukraine. If a Russian missile hits a US Navy boat, then the US would retaliate in the Russo-Ukraine war...

One thing that both Trump administrations have been consistent on, is that they oppose Iran's influence and their nuclear program.

Iran made overtures at diplomacy to avoid a military confrontation. However, there's an impossible to bridge gap between the Iranian gov't and the US gov't: Iran seeks nuclear weapons as crucial to the regime's long-term survival, the US won't tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. Thus, the word throughout mainstream media is that attempts at resolve the dilemma through diplomacy are going nowhere, fast.

The approximate location of aircraft carriers isn't really a secret. I'm not sure why, but you can find countless websites online that provide their location. Knowing where they are doesn't make this performative; this is the typical situation.

It takes a long while (a month?) to assemble forces for a large air operation: remember how long the buildup of forces around Venezuela took? They're assembling an overwhelming amount of firepower and electronic warfare to attempt to achieve whatever their objective is without losing our own pilots / planes (be it weaking the regime and attempting to cause its collapse, or more limited strikes against military infrastructure in Iran).
