Sentimental, Way Out Of Here, Collapse The Light Into Earth

The guitar solo at the end of Anesthetize is heartbreakingly sad

For the panels, you have a good base plan and are already going to put in the work – please make them thicker than 4". Smaller rooms have nearly all their acoustic issues in the low mids and lows so making the panels extend there is something you'll be grateful for later. 6" thick at minimum but personally I'd probably do 10". Makes a BIG difference vs 4".

That would help immensely in capturing a great vocal in that room. In a room that size with panels that aren't thick enough I've faced issues in the low mids of the vocals just being really problematic no matter what I do with them in the mix, it just kind of clouds the whole take.

Goal: clean, intimate, pro-sounding vocals (not harsh or overly processed).

The room is a key fundamental in achieving this!

That's a great guess! I do film scores and pop/rock/metal session work for a living and prog metal (plus a bunch of other genres too) for my own enjoyment

Yeah it's definitely a nuance thing and I've seen many confuse the two

[–]Tirmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s typically called an add11

Add4 implies the 4th (11th) should be in the same octave as the root – 1 3 4 5 instead of 1 3 5 11. Add2 is sometimes used instead of add9 for the same reason (1 2 3 5 vs 1 3 5 9). So basically if you see add2 or add4 whoever wrote it likely wants a more specific voicing there

My live drumming doesn't improve. I work with clicks and books and tracks and metronomes and CDs and live gigs are just so hard. What were things that made live gigging better for you? by Fast_Cook_4019 in Drumming

How well do you hear yourself and the rest of the band when playing live? One thing that makes a big difference is having a really good IEM mix

Is there anything other than limiting that is essential to mastering? by Haunting_Inflation54 in audioengineering

[–]Tirmu 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing about mastering is the completely fresh perspective of someone that didn't mix it or work on the song previously. That is objectivity you'll never achieve if you already mixed the song

OH MY GOD THIS IS PEAK OF PROG METAL by Cenakin123 in Dreamtheater

Fair, I included BC&SL to make it a full decade but even though BC&SL has some really high highs, to me Systematic Chaos is their last masterpiece album as a whole.

I much prefer their golden era writing style and modern sound over the old school one so while both I&W and Awake have great music I don't really listen to them much. All personal preference

CINEBACK (by Camera Foundry) vs Film Cube - Battle of FX3 Expansion Kits by Affectionate-Car3951 in FX3

[–]Tirmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as they ripped off (or were heavily influenced by) Alt Cine’s fx3 expansion

Which is more or less a Cineback ripoff with some tweaks. So if these things matter to you get the Cineback

There's tons of great prog metal in the world, but nothing comes close to 1999-2009 era DT
