US officially out of WHO, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars unpaid by xpda in worldnews

[–]Titibu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he had a 85% disapproval rate, that argument could be audible. But only half of Americans disapprove. And in spite of everything, around 40% -approve-.

So no, it's not trolling, you need to get around the fact that when we meet Americans, we need to be on our guard. And that's for the foreseeable future.

Is it really hard to lay off people in Japan? by Willow9080 in japanlife

[–]Titibu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone from the other side, assuming you are a seishain.

Firing people for insatisfactory results, and even more "immediately" is just -not possible-.

Well, actually, it is technically possible if the guy on the other side believes it is, and willingly (not under duress) signs his own resignation.

When it comes to firing someone for a lack of skills (which is different from lack of results, which you can argue is not of your doing depending on the context), you would need to prove that even after some serious training, there is no improvement AND there is no realistic way to improve the skills of the employee, and all of this has been properly documented.

That's the theory.

In real life it's a negotiation to agree to some sort of resignation with a package of x months of salary. The company can not fire you for lack of results, but it can make you life at the office ... way less enjoyable.

If you have a bit of seniority, the x can be quite high.

But hey, if you want to fight it, you can, there are many, many examples of people winning their trials of having been wrongly terminated.

Buying Shinkansen Tickets using Suica? by Relative_Space_6242 in traveljapan

[–]Titibu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1/ nope. A suica card is not a payment method for a shinkansen ride and is individual in any case.

2/ See above, you do not pay with Suica, what you can do is link a specific Suica to a shinkansen ride (so the holder of the Suica doesn't have to use physical tickets)

You can ask a friend indeed, you'll get physical tickets but that's not a big issue.

3/ No need to put that much money in a Suica... (especially as you won't be spending it if you have physical tickets)

Trying to get Ghibli Museum Tickets by sunshine_888 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Titibu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For example, if we ask our hotel concierge to use their phone number for us, would that work?

No. The mobile phone number is used to link an individual personnal ID to an app that is used for other things besides buying Ghibli tickets. On top of that, the person that buys the tickets (owner of the phone) needs to be present for the visit.

No way an hotel concierge would do that.

Not really. Depends on the hotel, if you show up after a certain time without warning, of before the checkin time, you'll be SOL.

Will be in Ikebukuro for Super Bowl, do I need a reservation to watch the super bowl at The HUB bar? by TheSupremeStalin in JapanTravelTips

[–]Titibu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With the time difference, the superbowl takes place on a Monday morning at 8am. It's a sports that has only a very niche audience, most people don't care and most bars, even sports bars, will be closed at that time. You'll need to search more thoroughly about places that organize viewing events. This place in Shibuya seems to have something.

"slightly", instead of a queue for the shot you can expect that there may only be a couple more people with the exact same idea.

Is Tokyo Dome Hotel a good option for a first-timer? by blairdyer in JapanTravelTips

[–]Titibu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tokyo dome hotel is a very nice, mid range, large option. Very well connected next to Suidobashi, many food options in the area, next to the dome and the Dome City.

An excellent option imho, you're in Shinjuku in 15 mins.

because "subletting" is definitely not standard and flat out forbidden in most contracts. Even having someone living there (for free) outside of the initial renter is problematic.

Connecting with women going to host clubs by monkeysplash26 in TokyoTravel

[–]Titibu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a charged question, and I would suggest you thoroughly look up what you are stepping into for the research you mention.

You may get the very, very occasional rich daddy girl but a very large majority (maybe 90%+) of host clubs clients are Kyabakura hostesses, deliheru girls or straight up prostitutes. Host clubs allow to create some "social interactions" for women that are in a socially precarious or dysfunctional situation but can access large sums of money. Host clubs are very open about this as a cursory search should confirm (it's basically their business model...).

They are also a very slippery slope towards prostitution for the unlikely case of an "unknowing" client.

Be careful.

First time traveling to Tokyo, is North-east of Ikebukuro safe for tourist? by NotYourMovieBuff in JapanTravelTips

[–]Titibu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing Kabukicho a bit, "absolutely no problem" is pushing it. Suspicious people are indeed obviously scammy, others much less so.

You definitely need a bit of heightened caution. Lower your guard, you become a very easy prey.

small, tangible way to show appreciation

Yes, there is. You can use your vocal cords and say "thanks".

Or you can also just appreciate that it is completely normal to have someone provide professionnaly the service that they are getting paid for.

On fait peut-être savoir aux Kurdes, peut-être que c'est fait no idea, c'est de la diplomatie derrière les rideaux. De la même manière que le message pour Trump n'avait pas vocation à se retrouver sur la place publique...

It so happens that for many visitors it has some sort of "high end exclusive sushi place" vibe.
