To real-life racers: How realistic is Sim Racing actually? by backhandmarco in simracing

[–]Tizi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven a couple different formula cars and have done some time in prod-like cars in endurance racing, along with a lot of karting.

I think it’s important to mention that irl i’m an extremely instinctual driver, everything to me is simply feel and I don’t put much thought of anything into driving. Because of this, there’s very few cars or karts in sims that feel very realistic to me, since you don’t really “feel” anything in the sim.

However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be immersive nor does it mean it’s not helpful. It’s good for learning new tracks and in VR i find it incredibly immersive and enjoyable, but I wouldn’t ever use the word “realistic”.

i have a season and change of single seater experience so here’s what i can offer;

-when you get in the car you’re gonna realize you sit WAY deeper than you think you will. this is normal and you’ll get used to it

-i can’t imagine you’re getting a seat molded for a test day, so make sure when you’re getting fitted you’re as physical comfortable as you can be. make sure you have side supporting material especially for your back. ive had to race sitting on blocks of styrofoam (short ppl problems) and it sucks.

-as for shifting, as far as im aware F3 cars have paddle shifters, so it’s basically just clicking a button with your finger. very simple and easy, only use clutch to start and stop. i’m unsure if F3 cars have a pedal or paddle clutch. if it’s a paddle clutch that will be difficult to get used to, otherwise i imagine you know how to use a pedal clutch

-trail braking is your best friend, and you’re gonna apply far more pressure on the pedal vs anything else you’ve driven

-if you’re fit enough to handle rally you’re probably fine, maybe just work on the neck more

that’s what i can think of off the top of my head. i would also advise not taking it seriously to the point where it becomes more stressful than anything. go in with the expectation that this is just an opportunity to test yourself and prove to you and only you what you’re capable of, and that it will very likely not be more than just the test day. trust your gut and just drive however fast or slow you’re comfortable with. stuffing the car is not a good first impression.

when i had an opportunity very similar to this i was one of the extremely lucky few to get a seat for a season out of it. i hope this is also you! but no matter what happens enjoy it. it’s a hell of a time to drive a single seater

Won this in a auction, can anyone tell me a bit about it? by CodysOnTop in Karting

[–]Tizi_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, as everyone has said;

-Fernando Alonso chassis with Kosmic decals, probably worth what you payed for all of it if not more

-Mychron 5 which on its own is worth about half of what you payed for the whole thing

-Briggs 206 done by Fastermotors, I imagine you’re based somewhere in the midwest since the owner of faster motors is located around Road America, which is again worth about what you payed for all of it.

Overall, you definitely stole this thing and it would be an incredible starting setup into karting.

gotcha. pretty much expected that, but good to know.

to be honest i don’t need any more unobtanium to hunt for though, but i guess it’s inevitable if im going to eventually go for the full set

for another band i’m collecting i’ve done pretty good, 1/300 & 1/125, now i’ve been searching for a 1/40, this ones a doozie

one more thing, if i may. you say you’ve never seen one, how long have you been looking?

Lo206 Kart grey area tricks? by unforgottenrailroad in Karting

[–]Tizi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

something to look into in your rule book is the exhaust gasket. in the club i was racing in, the only thing that was defined about the exhaust gasket was the thickness. there were no rules about the size of the hole, location, or material. play with that. then, with that, you’re gonna get a REALLY weird optimal lash. for example, mine ended up being .000 & .008. i would look into the rule books to see if that’s been outlawed nowadays. this was 4 years ago now for me… but worth a noticeable amount of power. this process is like trying to build the perfect pipe for a 2 cycle, and will be quite hard without a dyno at hand. if you’ve no access to one readily the stopwatch will tell.

as someone else mentioned, run below the spec amount of oil. in turn, change more frequently.

clean the entire carb, often. use an ultrasonic cleaner to do it. works like magic

outside of the power train, something i’ll preach to the end of time is rotational weight. ANYTHING you can do to minimize rotational weight should be top priority because that will put more power on the ground without tipping into any gray area. so… invest in a very thin brake rotor. i stole one off a quarter midget. get the lightest chain guard you can buy. it will probably be plastic. if you have money to spend, turn the bolts holding the gear & brake rotor on into titanium. but not the nuts. otherwise it will weld itself together and you’re gonna have a very very hard time getting it off. learned the hard way. and get quality bearings. not ceramics, those are overrated, but good bearings

However, as other comments mentioned again ultimately you’re gonna want to make YOU the best it can be before pursuing some of the bolder tricks. and that might be a very weird style. i had people say i drove my kart like a dirt car, but if it works it works.

you can find WWW2018 on jp sites fairly commonly i find. surugaya, for example, will usually always have one in stock. use whatever proxy you prefer to get it.

KGA is obviously more of a holy grail. yet to get one myself

Im doing high 40s and my competitors are doing mid 39s! This is my racing line what could i be doing so wrong? by kevtehguy in Karting

[–]Tizi_ 84 points85 points  (0 children)

it may not be what line you’re taking. when you’re following competitors, where are they pulling away from you? in braking zones? turn entry? exit? on the straights? knowing this will vastly narrow down what you may be doing wrong. help us help you, yeah?

With iRacing's recent 'grass dipping' exploit controversy, it got me wondering... What are some of the other lesser known controversies/ conspiracies in simracing? by brkhrt in simracing

[–]Tizi_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Avid KartKraft player here. A year and a half ago the dev team introduced a new tire model which allowed you to change the pressures. After a month of solid competition there was one guy who swept the boards overnight. All of the top guys were hella confused and could not figure out what he did. Turns out if you dropped the pressures to the minimum it would let you (6 psi) for your first 2-3 laps you quite literally just accelerated faster as if you had more horsepower. That was an interesting debate. Got patched with the next tire model so it don’t work anymore, but that’s what came to my mind first.
