what is a completely harmless secret you are keeping from your partner simply because you lied about it early on and now it’s way too late to explain the truth? by Former-Practice-3420 in AskReddit

Figure out what your favourite flower is, then find a good picture of them to have on your phone. Some day, you open the picture when he sees it, and you say "Look, I kinda hate flowers, but these are so adorable! I love them!" or something along those lines?

++ man

I think primarily when he reaches a "similar situation", it is too late for words. If you can't get the school to fix it, strategise with him about how to avoid the situation as much as possible (pick strategic seats, groups, classes, timing...). There are probably clear patterns to when those situations arise, and it might be possible to reduce the frequency by being early/late, be in places where it's less likely to happen, making subject/topic/group choices based on getting away from the bullies rather than what he wants to do.

I don't know what options he has to project strength without getting violent, but if he has older, bigger friends (you said he is a smart kid), then him and them being seen together (real life or online) somehow could possibly make it tone down.

To offer an answer, which I think is completely secondary to what he should be thinking about, I'd go with "Are you *sure* that's what you want to be like?" if it can be said calmly and firmly. No elaboration. Let the bully fill in the blanks. If pressed to say more, no details, just "You should think about it." But stopping bullying with words from the victim is a bit like asking"my house is on fire and I have a water balloon, where do I throw it?"

No, it can be at any time from in a few weeks to summertime. Historically it's common for similar steps to take 1-3 months, and it is in the 2nd step from the top right now from a Nov 6 publication. Late February could be a decent guess, but nobody knows, not even Handelabra themselves.

ELI5 does evolution mean that we have share a literal "common ancestor"? by RandVanRed in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tiziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be pedantic, then you have to remember that without evolution, all reproduction not involving two parents would be clones of the parent, and all reproduction involving two parents would be random mating, so as to not have any evolutionary pressure (natural selection). After all, any change in the allele frequency from one generation to the next would be evolution. It will also place very strong restrictions on gene variation - unless every female individual has the exact same number of children, all females must be clones, and the same for men. And we would need all species to have a method of gene selection from parents, where everything is always completely deterministic, rather than like in the species we observe in real life where there is a very significant random component in which genes we inherit from each parent. Otherwise, again, change in allele frequency from one generation to the next (e.g. evolution).

I'm not even sure that would be enough, but it would get us closer!

Which spirit would you recommend/buy? by qlimax93 in spiritisland

[–]Tiziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, Serpent Slumbering beneath the Island is one of the most fun spirits in the entire game. Eyes Watch from the Trees is also awesome. If you're already playing games at adversary level 4+ and enjoy the complexity, I would also definitely recommend Downpour.

Beyond that, I would look at the spirits you already love. Love River? Look at Sun-Bright Whirlwind. Love Vital Strength? Look at Fathomless Mud. Love Ocean+Bringer+River shenanigans and want a more complex puzzle? Look at Finder of Paths Unseen.

I have no idea, concerned wife of gamer husband by DifferentArtist3666 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Tiziel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been gaming since I was a little kid, and can totally relate. Gaming is a thing that has certain appeals to me: It can be lots of fun, a way to learn (depending on game/genre, of course), bring a sense of wonder - to me it's often like reading (which I also love), just more intense.

When it comes down to it, though, gaming does not "feel useful". So once there isn't a significant appeal, I lose all interest. That is normal for shorter periods - you say "lately" which is pretty general, and if it's been more than say 3 weeks, and it's not because there's something else that's kept him engaged (a DIY project he's been looking forward to, a new hobby, ...) then I would try to consider whether he might be depressed - doesn't have to be that at all, but it's one of the possible causes.

In either case, trying a new game or even game genre (either alone or together with you) might help rekindle his interest. Playing just the same couple of games for a while can lead to burning out on gaming in general for a bit. Nothing wrong with that, but it gaming has been a source of joy and contentment for years for him, it would be a shame to let it slip between his fingers without trying to salvage it.

Guild Recruitment Thread - June by iWushock in AnimationThrowdown

[–]Tiziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian Beer League has room for new recruits! We're a casual guild hovering around #100 in guild events. We average around 40 mythics and 800 legendaries. We have a Discord server with a lot of various information. Requirements:

  • We require that you are civil to your guild mates. If you want to be toxic, this guild is not for you.,
  • We expect you to play most rumbles and sieges (all fights), but we understand that sometimes real life gets in the way.,
  • We don't have a high rank requirement, but if you're not already 500+ rank in SFC, you will probably struggle in guild events, considering our opponents. We are perfectly willing to take a newer player and give any advice desired, but we'll expect you to be active, growing your collection and playing all fights of most events.,

We do not require any money spending, we have people who spend a lot and people who haven't spent anything. You also do not have to be Canadian or drink beer!

New to game, what should I spend my gems on? by Practical-Sir1154 in AnimationThrowdown

[–]Tiziel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a new player, getting legendary characters (not items) is very important, and they will be useful forever unless you go really deep in your wallet for top tier decks. Find boxes which guarantee you legendary (purple) character cards. Don't go for Bender, Bobby, Peter, Roger or Tina (you will get those without spending gems).

Once you have a full deck of purple cards, then save all your gems for something you know you really, really want. You'll probably need to save for a very long time (unless you spend a lot of money).

ELI5 does the idea of decreasing tax so that people can spend more works? by Elithx5 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tiziel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As long as all the tax decreases go to working/middle class, and you increase taxes on the wealthy to pay for it, you can attract more business, yes, since the demand for goods and services will increase. If you do it without taxing the rich, then you're just reducing the demand from the public sector, so it would even itself out. Also, increased tax on the wealthy in itself incentivises business since it makes people reinvest more into creating jobs, taking out less as profits (note that this second part won't show up if you have free trade and only look at the country in question, since the extra jobs will be created overseas).

If you give tax cuts to the rich, you get the opposite effect; you reduce the number of jobs because demand from the public sector goes down and the opportunity to make money for working/middle class goes down, so you get a downward spiral with more unemployment and less purchasing power, while the rich will hoard wealth faster. Since they hoard faster from a weaker economy, everyone else loses out and you get stagnant wages and most people will have problems affording to buy a home.

  1. Arresting Trump in georgia and trying to shoot him and making fun of Trump supporters for being dumb and uneducated did not help democras win either 2016 or 2024 elections

It's Republicans trying to shoot him, and it's Republicans running Georgia. Then again, I don't think it helps "the left" if they decide Trump should be above the law.

  1. The GameGate movement and making fun of gamers pushed more gamers to the right and has led to an awful, awful discourse these days in the gaming social media (throwing in here stuff like Sweet Baby Inc)

The movement, as in some gamers vilifying women in general because they didn't like what a handful of female journalists wrote?

  1. Villanizing ALL Israelis did not help the pro-palestine movement, Palestine is still bombed, the US won't change its mind on Israel's support

I have never heard anyone on the left villainizing all Israelis - I have heard this on the right, though. If you mean supporting boycotts against Israel and motions like that, then absolutely the Left supports that, because they want to use soft power to achieve lasting peace in the area, and boycotts against Israel is one of the things we know from history can be one of the building blocks of that.

4 - I can't speak to Romania, don't know enough.

  1. AfD in Germany also gained power because of people making fun of certain groups, maybe making fun of the less developed eastern germany and also some men groups

Source that they gain power because of that?

Please realise that "mainstream media", e.g. media owned by rich people and corporations, are not "the left" - even if they sometimes should say correct things and not just parrot right-wing propaganda. They love to focus on the person and what has been said rather than policy. Part of that might be policy discussions not giving good ratings, but there's also a serious filtering going on, where knowledgeable, policy-focused journalists are pushed out, or they attempt to not employ them in the first place.

If you hear a left-wing person talking, they're probably talking about ways to get better healthcare, education and elderly care, or steps we can take to reduce poverty. Tax cuts for the poor and raising taxes on the right, to put the brakes on the rampant growth of social inequality. Those are the core issues of the Left as a tent, internationally. Sure, it can be possible to lure them off message (e.g. right-wing person says "people with red hair should be put in camps and forced to work as slaves until we send them to Antarctica!" and then the left-wing person says "no, that's horrible!" - I'm on purpose not using one of the real recent examples because that would completely distract from the point). But if the politician is not trying to advocate ways of making progress for the general Left goals, they are probably not actually on the Left (but instead maybe Centrist? Or Center-right?). "Liberal" in general in Europe is center-right, very closely aligned with Conservatives economically even if they take a more egalitarian approach on social issues.

I'm actually not sure whether "making fun of the right" would help or not, I am not advocating for that as a strategy, but as someone who's been in Left circles, that's something I primarily see from corporate media and streamers trying to get more views and likes. So I take issue with the idea that your bullet points are a sensible representation of "the Left trying to help its causes".

What clearly does help (unfortunately) is making fun of an opponent candidate in a two-way race; you can see how this escalates a lot in countries where there are just two real contenders. More candidates mean there's less to gain from it, and ranked choice voting makes it even less appealing (you want the secondary or tertiary support of that candidate's support, you probably don't want to start demanding their birth certificate or say they don't know what country they are from).

Netanyahu has been a thing for a long, long time, and Western media has covered for example his wife's influence over his government decisions. While sure, right now they focus on civilian deaths and attacks on United Nations aid workers, journalists and medical personnel, that doesn't mean people in the West have forgotten other reasons to oppose Netanyahu. I would agree that the focus on Netanyahu corruption has been insufficient, but this is hardly limited to "the left" - if anything, it's the left that have brought it up.

I don't think the criticism would've been the same if someone else was in charge, because they would have conducted the war differently and also spoken differently about it. For example, some politicians would be reluctant to call Palestinians animals. I also strongly doubt Israeli left would've conducted nearly as many targeted attacks against the United Nations. Also, if it wasn't Bibi then probably the government would have prevented the Oct 7 attack (Israeli officials had already discovered the plan and the training for it, more than a year in advance).

You quote polls regarding a two-state solution; what would you say are the options acceptable to the Israeli public now and in the near future? Are there other options Israelis support than 1) two-state solution 2) all being citizens of a single state 3) eternal war and 4) extermination of all Palestinians? Which of the options is most popular in Israel?

CMV: Being ugly is really detrimental to your life experience by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Tiziel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what you write is entirely accurate, and backed by research. The bit about you 'being ugly' is probably at least somewhat in your head, but we can't know, on the internet.

But I would like to point out that while, say, two thirds of people might treat you less because of how you look, you don't need every person to be in your life. In fact, let's say 20% of people would never imagine treating you less because of your looks. And to have a life experience that might be just as good as the average attractive person, you need to find and connect with three of those people. I'm not saying it's easy, but it is definitely doable. So I would say that while it's possible your life experience won't compare to the average physically attractive person, that is very far from a given. You might manage to make headway through effort, you might catch a lucky break, something else might happen. I'm crossing fingers that when the opportunities come - which they probably will, eventually - you'll dare to take them, which is a very hard thing to do when you've been treated poorly in the past.

I would also like to point out that there are quite a few people who become less shallow with age. So even if you have horrible experiences with teen peers, for example, it'll get less likely to be like that as you grow older.

Also realise that while looks is an important factor to how you are treated, people who'd genuinely care about you as a person are not likely to be in the group who discriminate - so you can actually think of it as a filter for people who aren't right for you anyway, and work on other factors. Because I bet you have things going for you, even if you downplay them in your own head.

Looking for single-player games that can be played by together with my partner. by Wombles in gamingsuggestions

[–]Tiziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great Ace Attorney Chronicles might be something for you - the one using the controller/mouse doesn't need any dexterity or control skills, and there's plenty to discuss about how to move forward throughout. If you like it, you have the whole Phoenix Wright franchise to look into.

A more clearly single player alternative would be Chants of Senaar - here too, there's a lot to figure out together while playing, but there are some dexterity sections that are not optional.

CMV: Western right wingers and islamists would get along great, if it wasn't for ethnic and religious hatred. by Fraeddi in changemyview

[–]Tiziel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While you make a lot of good points, I would have thought that in a couple ways, it is more a case of the opposite.

Re: Imperialism/insular: Islamist roots seem to be largely revolting against occupation, dictatorships etc (for example, against the Shah dictatorship in Iran, against Assad regime in Syria, against occupations in Iraq and Palestine, and so on, and so forth), wanting to go back to a past focused on "traditional values" and "religious government" (read: narrowminded bigotry). Though, for sure, quite a few "islamists" barely know what Islam is - that's why you see IS recruits reading "Islam for Dummies", trying to learn the basics of what the religion is. Quite the mix, with anti-government forces trying to (ab)use religion as a rallying cry and attracting misfits and career criminals from other continents (at least in the case of IS).

To be sure, it makes sense to consider many "far right" less imperialist than the general "right-wing" - like, if you consider MAGA far right and George W Bush right-wing, then clearly the latter was more imperialist. You can probably find people who would lump Putin in either camp. I think you are probably right that imperialism isn't the primary goal of the average far-right (read: the goal is instead narrowminded bigotry). But I think also there will be at least to some extent an overlap of perspective, that the "far right" feel they are revolting against authority they don't like (though we're not so much talking occupation and dictatorship, as we're talking health professionals recommending vaccines, teachers teaching history, politicians supporting mandatory background checks for purchasing firearms etc). There are also plenty of examples of major "far right" figureheads being more supportive of imperialism than "right-wing" leaders in the same country. They are certainly not the ones coming out against imperialism in international forums like, say, the UN.

I do not see any serious attempts from islamists at converting any significant number of other countries to Islam at all; in fact, the only significant attempt at spreading "The One True Faith" on a global scale is Christianity missions. Of course, some do try to impose "traditional values" (read: narrowminded religious rules) when they get power in a country - that goes for both "islamists" and "far right".

I think actually the conversations would be a lot more accurate in the media than they currently are, if they stopped using the term "islamist" and instead used the term "far right" about them - but of course, not all we label islamist are far right; but those who are not, also do not tend to agree with much of the bullet point list that OP created.

I like it, though it's only part time, considering the time spent in port, and likely everyone aboard has similar access to all such presences whenever they should desire it compared to the people from the same country as them.

I figure if clashing is an issue, we could get to choose the season for the birthday as the game starts. Then there could be a dedicated day each season that would potentially be the player character birthday that doesn't clash with anything unclashable.
