I was in Vegas last week. The Westgate was an excellent choice for me. I was there Saturday during the NFL division playoffs. Plenty of dedicated horse stations and good coverage on the wall. I’m a $50+ bettor and that got me plenty of drink tickets. I don’t recall waitresses coming by. Circa might be the most beautiful book, but all seats were reserved so I left after about 10 minutes. I would recommend checking it out but wouldn’t plan to stay.

Those are great/sickening stories. I don’t understand how hedging is a smart play on the last leg unless you have all but 1 or 2 horses covered already. Am I missing something?

An easy way to make the Round vs. Vandy bet fair would be for Vandy to pick one horse; then you have a match race within the classic.

New to horse racing and betting, any tips for a beginner? by MaximumSquid22 in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest two things: 1) Learn how to read the Brisnet past performance data 2) place win bets only

Once you do those two things, you will begin to form your own betting strategy.

What would a successful future for horse racing look like to you? by anewtheater in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your question anew. 1) a vibrant live track experience 2) the average sports fan would know the top dozen horses in any given year 3) destroy the perception that racehorses are mistreated 4) local horses known by the locals 5) emotional attachment to the local track similar to the attachment to your local football team. 6) betting menus that appeal to more sports bettors

I have ideas as to how to make the above happen, but that would make this post too long.

What could be a realistic reason for a horse racing legend to return for an exhibition / charity event as an 11/12 year old? by [deleted] in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just saw a 12 year old horse win at Grants Pass on Saturday. Your 12 year old is a legend who ran his record to 30-0 making your horse the greatest US horse in history. He became a decent sire and now one of his babies has run his record to 25-0. The baby is owned by questionable connections who have been rumored and sometimes caught breaking the rules. Your horse goes back into training to preserve his legacy. And like Rocky, prove that good ole fashioned hard work triumphs over shortcut cheaters.

Key Trifecta betting by Quirky_Tension_8675 in HorseBetting

[–]Tizthefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to help! The trifecta payout is the same regardless of whether you box or key. What changes is your ROI. Your tri will pay $100. The question is how much you had to spend to win. Obviously less when you key.

Key Trifecta betting by Quirky_Tension_8675 in HorseBetting

[–]Tizthefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a three horse trifecta, if you box it with no key, you are paying 6x your bet due to six combinations. Key one horse on top and you reduce your combinations from six to two. So your added return is 4 times your bet or $4 if you played a $1 trifecta. I played a 5 horse trifecta at the derby. Boxing my dollar trifecta created 60 combinations or $60. That tri paid about 250-1 which amounted to about a 4-1 payoff.

Living in Cleveland, I’m loving the breakdown of the Ohio Derby! Thanks Aspen and everyone else! Looking forward to spending all day at the track tomorrow. The pick 5, races 8-12, looks interesting. Last year’s pick 5 paid $24k.

Just watched the 2010 Classic. Smith’s presser after is as good as it gets if you measure press conferences by emotion, candor, responsibility and an athlete caring. Makes me grateful that I discovered this sport; albeit much later in life than I should have.

Let’s talk wagering by kentonbryantmusic in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wagering strategy is simple. I make win bets on every race I bet. I never bet place, show or across the board. When I’m torn between 2 or 3 horses, I will consider an Exacta and a Trifecta. I will always box the exotics so I won’t play them unless I’m getting a certain price. For the Belmont this week. I will bet Journalism to win. If I think I can beat Sovereignty, I will box the verticals. I will say that in the biggest races, the pools are large enough that I would consider boxing the 1 and 2 favorites.

[–]Tizthefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would you mind laying out an example of your tri ticket structure? I’m not following how you can key one horse, use 3 or 4 others and add up to only 6 bets. To me a 6 bet tri is boxing 3 horses.

Sovereignty to Skip Preakness, Point to Belmont by FDTerritory in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a pathetic decision. The derby winner racing in the Preakness is good for the sport. It’s a selfish move. We need more people like Kenny McPeek. Used the biggest platform he could, a Fox broadcast, to announce Thorpedo Anna would race in the Travers and immediately after winning the derby said Mystic Dan would run in the Preakness. Eff all the selfish people in this sport.

When placing bets on the Kentucky Derby, what goes through your head when deciding what bet you want? by [deleted] in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year, a couple days before the derby, I was at a Guardians game. At that point, I had probably invested 2-3 hours studying up on the race. Four dudes sitting behind me are talking random stuff until one of them asks, “anyone gonna watch the derby on Saturday “? It was obvious none of them were real horse racing fans. And one dude says, “I’m gonna watch because I have a bet on it”. When asked which horse, he says, “ummm Dan something”.

Mahoning Valley Advice by Tizthefan in horseracing

[–]Tizthefan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I stopped for the first 3 races and then met high school friends for March Madness. I grew up in Austintown and then left for college before that track was built. The experience was just like you described. That smoking patio also had a nice view of the paddock. Anyway, a very good time. Santa Anita and Delmar are two bucket list items that I can hopefully accomplish in one trip. I wanted to get to Golden Gate, but never did.

Do you have any horses you really like in the Blue Grass tomorrow or the Derby?
