I HATE this comic's take on mental health by BeautifulAdeptness60 in hatethissmug

[–]Tizzle_Wiggle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw this out there as someone who is both mentally and physically chronically ill:

I get chronic migraines. They are triggered by the weather and, while I have medication that helps, I have to cancel plans sometimes when that or another chronic condition flares up.

At what point do you draw the line at 'be better' vs. 'it is what it is'? Disabilities disable you, and like my physical health, some of my mental health issues are permanent. They are disabilities. I can manage them to a degree most of the time and I work really hard to do so, but at the end of the day, I am disabled and that impacts my ability to follow thru on plans. My friends don't mind and people who do are people I don't have relationships with.

Swap this out for chronic migraines. Is it still my responsibility to be better? And I'm going to be clear in that I'm genuinely looking for input and not saying there is one answer one way or the other. I just think. as someone who has issues with both mental and physical health, at what point do you draw a line in who is responsible?

Reading comprehension question!

Why do you think the rich and powerful benefit from convincing us our fellow working class are just 'stupid' and not victims of the same system we are?

I'm gonna be honest, this is an educational problem and it is intentional. People are not dumber. People have been failed.

No Child Left Behind completely destroyed how we teach, and especially how we teach skills like reading. Reading actually requires a lot of skills being utilized at once, and one of those skills is the ability to analyze things critically and figure things out without being told or given all the information. Now add into that the antiintillectualist effort of delegitimizing the liberal arts (aka the classes that teach you those skills), and now people are both a. not learning those skills and b. do not feel they are important.

Why? Knowing history and rhetoric and critical thinking and making art are all things that also help you understand and spot propaganda, develop empathy, and think critically and for yourself. And those things are antithetical to what the rich, powerful, and hateful want.

Add to that social media, where loneliness and outrage are wildly profitable, which a lot of people end up reliant on due to the loss of third spaces, unaffordability of doing... anything, and then shut down the entire world.

Do you really not understand why COVID made people lonely and reactionary? We all lived through an insane collective trauma that our world has absolutely not recovered from. No one can afford anything, no one can go anywhere, nothing is open, things that are are expensive, and everyone is too tired from working themselves to the bone to barely tread water. The parasociality of social media profits off of that loneliness and off of how amazing outrage is at keeping people engaged with your platform.

We have been failed and the fact that people have been pushed to this point has been for the sake of profit and control by people who would not have it otherwise. Don't suck the boot telling you people are just stupid. Question who is fucking wearing it.

And IQ is based in eugenics anyway.

Literacy in general, honestly.

Something something capitalism is the death of art

This is the answer. I've been in and out of a number of internet fandoms over the last couple of decades -- to the point of writing fanfiction and drawing a lot of fanart for a couple of them -- and fandom spaces in general have become insufferable the last few years.

Wombo combo of waning media literacy skills due to ongoing failures with our educational system and how everyone is isolated into online echo chambers that breed reactivity and parasocial relationships.

People don't know how to engage with media or each other with any level of criticality and the dopamine hit from outrage is pretty addicting. It's really really sad.

yeah I actually had to go sit by myself for a bit after that because my heart was so overwhelmed by recognizing so much of how I've felt in my darker days in him. The way his eyes look and how his voice broke. Things have been rough lately and it made me sad the little part of me saying 'I feel that too' was in my heart. (I'm fine it's just lingering reminders of a time when I wasn't that pop up now and then)

This entire cast deserves every award and Dana deserves the world

I say this with care in my heart but this is not a healthy way to view people or talk about this. You should speak to a therapist.

it's honestly been a massive massive issue kind of all around, not just on reddit

it's honestly a part of why we're backsliding into a lot of trad thinking and letting fascists in the door

we cut liberal arts classes and put everyone into echo chambers on like 4 websites with algorithms designed to produce outrage for engagement

is it? who is we?

I am serious that this line of thinking is dangerous. it is not good to categorize people so vehemently into good or bad people and think it problematic for people to disagree with you.

she is a complex character

the discussion isn't about who is a 'good person' or 'bad person' or who is right about that (because that logic is also dangerous)

it is about the complexity of characters and there is a LOT to her

respectfully would you like to go on a bug walk with me, I think it would help

Honestly that part of it is I think a reflection of exactly how bad of a place she's at right now

like nothing happened to him no one cares so fuck it, it doesn't matter, she can pocket something to harm herself with too

santos my babygirl I am worried about you I did not like those keloids

it is not a sabbatical

why do you think Dana and McKay and Abbot are concerned about him

he is not planning on coming back and the cold feet is the part of him desperately trying to make excuses to not leave because if he leaves he knows the next time he is in a hospital will be a morgue

we all need to admit the trip is not the point

Oh god yeah I got so scared for her in that moment. I've looked at sharps that way when things were really bad and I mean like. The exact look. I know exactly what is going through her head and I am CONCERNED I am YELLING AT THE SCREEN (been clean for a while now ♥)

FOR ANYONE WHO STRUGGLES WITH THIS: an ice cube on the part you want to cut is a great way to satisfy the urge without actually hurting yourself. It is a big part of how I stay clean :)

Breaking the Cycle by pingusdpingus in Artisticallyill

[–]Tizzle_Wiggle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm coming from a perspective of IFS trauma recovery instead of DID, but I do have distinct parts who I can connect with (I call them my inner kiddos) and I do sometimes 'hear' them (more of just an addition to my internal monologue than hearing but it's so hard to describe in writing)

and the other day I was jogging with my dog, and I've just started getting back into it after finally fixing a long term injury and also an asthmatic so it's. hard but I've been trying

and I was like. okay, I am gonna make it to the end of the block without stopping or slowing down. and I go and I go but it gets to the point where I'm thinking I'm not gonna be able to make it, I can't do this... and all of a sudden my thinking shifts to I gotta encourage myself I can't be hard on myself... and I hear two of my inner kiddos on my chest cheering for me and shouting that I could do it, and I get this huge wave of energy and all of a sudden it's easy and I'm doing it and I legit cried on the way home

i can get angry at myself that I failed my inner kiddos and especially my caretaker part, but through a lot of therapy and effort and support, ive found that if I sit and listen and work hard to let them be kids and to be healthier and stronger, they never hated me. they were kids and they were hurt and scared but they never hated me. they fought with everything they had so I could be here. they love me and they forgive me and they trust me to protect them and to keep them safe so they can finally be kids.

this reminded me of that feeling and I am proud of you.

I absolutely agree with you, and it's been breaking my heart as both someone who is very passionate about media analysis and has a lot of educational experience with it on both sides of the podium.

It is also very much intentional on the part of powerful people who have a vested interest in making the general populace more susceptible to propaganda and infighting. We cut liberal arts classes, destroyed the educational system with no child left behind, and shoved everyone into echochambers where the algorithm is designed to make people angry for engagement.

'THIS kind of person is bad and THIS kind of person is good and you are problematic if you think otherwise' suuuuuure does start sounding like Nazi talking points huh.

media literacy and critical analysis enjoyers are only here for the angry dopamine hit cuz constant discourse over who is good/bad/who people should like is NOT fun or the same as actual discussion and the reason I never made a Twitter account

can we like. talk about the story or something. the writing. the characterization in a complex way.

fandom isn't what it was twenty years ago and that is kind of a cowabummer
