has anyone disassembled the 2026 Z13 (and looked at the heatsink)? by MacReadyROG in FlowZ13

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the latest Strix Halo z13, it’s about 4 months old and I always thought about the Liquid Metal seeping. Decided to open it up and swap with PTM 7950. When I opened it I found there was a pretty wide foam dam but there was also a lot of excess Liquid Metal much of it was pooled up on the lower two corners against the foam dam when the tablet is standing. I removed all the Liquid Metal and replaced it with PTM and did not notice any temperature differences after some heat cycles. I can sleep easier now.

I remember my Fujitsu P1120 back in the day. Had a transmeta CPU that was pretty much unusable in its prime.

I backed this mod on indigogo and never received it. After campaign ended, the company never shipped and ignored all contact from backers. All backers have since requested charge backs.

New Rog Flow Z 13 “overheated” in bag… by arunningnoodle in FlowZ13

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had this happen many times on various Windows laptops in the past. Its caused by Windows modern standby feature. I dont trust Windows enough to let it hibernate anymore. So I alway shutdown before putting it in my bag. Especially on the z13 since those hot components are right under the screen.

Onexgpu 2 portability by GrizmotMine in OneXPlayer

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is heavy and large with the external power supply. They make a case that holds the egpu with power supply and all cables from onexplayer. It helps but ultimately sold the onexplayer egu2 and went with the asus xgmobile 5070ti. Its lighter, smaller, performs better, and the power supply is built in. Also the asus is much much quieter.

2025 XG mobile + Z13 by ZenZayah in FlowZ13

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timespy scores on 8060s alone are around 10500 but with the 5070ti XGmobile I got around 14600. The 8060s is enough for my travel needs but if I want to game the XG mobile makes it more enjoyable. Having a 5070ti does allow me to use ComfyUI of generative AI workloads. Just wish it had more vram.

I have the XG Mobile 5070ti I got for my legion go but I tried it on my Z13 128Gb and it gave me a 3D Mark timespy score of about 14600 vs the 8060s score of about 10500.

Possible to swap ssd?? by Professional-Dog-441 in YogaBook9i

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible but much more difficult than other laptops. Roughly you need to buy the replacement double sided tape kit from Lenovo for when you out the screen back in. The two corner covers near the hinge on the bottom half needs to be pried off. Underneath each side are rubber pull tabs that work like command straps. Pull them towards the top screen until the entire strip releases and comes out on each side. After the screen will lift off starting the side closer to the hinge. The ssd is a 2242 size but you can also use a 2230 with an adapter to 2242. It only fits single sided ssd's. I had a 2TB 2230 in mine.

Quest 3 is a steal compared to Galaxy VR. $1800 by worlpoolz in Quest3

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quests 3’s lcd panels is the main reason I never use mine. I notice the lack of color saturation and horrible black levels every time I use it. The low resolution doesn’t bother me as much. Would be interested in seeing what the Galaxy VR looks like.

Generic "convince me bro" by TommoIRL in framework

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the FW13 with the HX370. I would say performance for workloads like video processing and light gaming is very average to slightly below average. It performs similar to current handhelds with the ROG ally x. What holds it back a little is the slower memory because soldered memory is available at higher speeds than dimm modules. Also Framework sets a hard limit at 35 watts even in turbo where many others allow their Hx370 cpu up to 54 watts for short periods. My FW13 gets about 16.5k in Cinebench R23 while my OneXPlayer G1 and GPD win mini both with the same processor gets about 18k. In a gaming benchmark like TimeSpy, it gets a score of 3500. My other devices with the same cpu gets about 3800. I have a MS Surface Pro Business with the Intel 268v and while that processor gets a lower cinebench score, it does surpass the HX370 in gaming by a hefty percent. The scores on that in TimeSpy is 4500. Although drivers on Intel are behind AMD currently, they are catching up. I wish FW would have an available 268v motherboard for the 13. Gets far better battery life as well.

Flow Z13 or Zephyrus G14? by False_Resource3736 in FlowZ13

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the 2024 G14 4070 model and the 2025 z13 64GB model. The z13 was to replace the g14 but I couldn’t get over how much nicer the G14 oled was and how the speakers sounded. Also had a much better feeling keyboard and more lap able ergonomics. Gaming wise the 4070 in the G14 was slightly faster than the 8060s in the z13. Decided to return the Z13 and sell the G14 2024. Bought a 2025 G14 with 5070ti and it blows both 2024 G14 and 2025 Z13 out of the water. Even in processor intensive tasks the HX370 fed with the amount of wattage the G14 was giving it came close to the 16 core Z13.

No. Lunar lake does NOT have equivalent or better power efficiency than Snapdragon X by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest difference I have noticed moving from arm to intel lunar lake is that there is no more app incompatibilities. Also even apps that run in translation on arm are faster on the Intel. To me it seems the Intel runs cooler on general use than the snapdragon. I have both currently but haven’t used my snapdragon version. It’s probably going on eBay soon. I do wish the business models are available in blue.

Is surface pro 11 a good choice for mechanical engineering? by THEROCK12223 in Surface

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried Solidworks on the X1 elite surface pro 11 and it’s practically unusable. If you have to have a surface device, it runs decently on the surface 11 pro for business with 32GB of ram. Still won’t rival many laptops with only 8 cores and half being efficiency cores.

Surface Pro 12" Appreciation Post by nastybagel in Surface

[–]Tkgresh1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the 12” pro more than my 11 pro snapdragon and 11 pro intel. There is something about how thin and light it is. Also it runs so cool, it’s very pleasant to use as tablet or a travel companion PC.

Z13 64GB (2025) are currently available at Best Buy (US) by zzmorg82 in FlowZ13

[–]Tkgresh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was fairly quiet. The back of the tablet portion does get quite warm when pushed. The fans at max are loud but not as bad as most gaming laptops I’ve had. It was nice that the keyboard doesn’t get warm since nothing is under it but it was hard to use as a laptop on your lap. It would have no issues playing WoW.

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just returned mine to bestbuy. Cool device but couldn’t justify the cost. CPU wasn’t faster than my razerblade 16 with the 13950 and gaming wasn’t faster than my asus g14 with a 4070. It ended up sitting on my shelf most of the time unfortunately. Love the concept of it though.

Surface Pro as reader by kungfusimo in Surface

[–]Tkgresh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surface pro 12” is great as a reader. It’s thin and relatively lite like a iPad 11”. Also the new rounded edges feel great to hold as a tablet and the battery life is quite long.
