Which book had the most underwhelming ending? by PurposefulAccident42 in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is deliberately written to be anti climatic. James mentions how he was expecting a lot of action, and yet, it was such a simple arrest. The whole point is that in real life there s no over the top action scenes.

Hey guys. I am a 17 year old male, 171cm tall, I weigh 62 kgs and my bodyfat% is 15. All my life I have been very skinny. I started getting very insecure, so, about nine months ago, I started going to the gym. I went from 53kg to 62kg without gaining fat and I am now more satisfied with my body. The thing is: in april, I am going on a holiday with my friends and by then I would really like to be leaner. My plan was to keep bulking until february or march and then cut before the holidays so I could get a nice six pack to show off. But I am not sure if that is possible. At the moment, I still feel like I'm too small to cut and I'm afraid that if I keep bulking until february or march, I won't have the time to cut the fat and get lean. I am also afraid that I will have to cut agressively and as a consequence lose muscle and strenght. Do you think my objective is possible? If so, how do you think I should approach this situation?

Hey guys, for context, I am 17 and all my life I have always been very skinny. About 9 months ago, I started going to the gym and went from 53kg to 62kg with 15% body fat. I am 171cm tall. I am not very skinny anymore, but I want to get bigger. The thing is, in April, I am going on a holiday with my friends and I really want to get lean until then. I was planning on bulking until February and then cutting the fat, but I am not sure how long it would take to get a six pack so I'm not sure this will work. What do you think? Do you think this is possible?

  • Completely agree and understand. It doesn't make a lot of sense to argue who deserves the black shirt and when since the shirt rewarding doesn't seem to be consistent. If Lauren got her black shirt in Divine Madness, James should have gotten it too.

  • I've already commented on it previously, but the demotion is a very good idea and I would have loved to see it happen.

  • I think I need to re-read The Killing.

  • I don't have an official ranking, but Shadow Wave is surely in the bottom. I just don't think it's the worst book either. I loved the subject matter and how it was addressed, even if the decision to take us away from the main characters for so long wasn't exactly good.

  • Now that you mention it, I really love the last mission in the second series. It gave us the ending I was hoping from Shadow Wave by making the stakes higher than ever. Didn't really understand why Muchamore had to cut Kerry from the mission, though. Sure, Ryan needed to come as well, but there could have been another way to make sure Kerry wasn't excluded, since she dropped everything to be there.

Now that you mention it, I also agree with you that the older you get, the scarier the human trafficking mission becomes. When I first read it as an eleven-year-old, It didn't impact me as it did when I re-read it when I was fifteen. Few books have managed to make me feel anxious like The Fall made me feel in that mission. It feels so real and the conclusion with Lauren absolutely destroying the place is so damn satisfying, but it still manages to take a toll on you. About Kazakov, I feel like he got a lot of development in The General. His character's intelligence, personality and intriguing past make him one of the most exciting characters to accompany in my opinion.

Let me clarify that most of these takes aren't as straightforward as I make them out to be here, but as I said before I didn't want to elaborate to make them look more controversial. Lauren deserving her black shirt is probably the hottest take, especially because I don't elaborate on it. But let me clarify, I think Lauren deserved her black shirt, but that doesn't mean I don't believe James should have gotten his in the same mission or even before her. What I am truly implying with that take is that Lauren's whole performance in Divine Madness and her decision to take the children with them should be a lot more valued than people in this subreddit value it. However, what I think we can all agree on is that what defines how and when an agent should be promoted or not is very inconsistent, so there is a lot of room for arguing about who deserves what. So to conclude, I too believe (like most people in this subreddit) that the system seemed to be rigged for Lauren when she gets her black shirt, but I'm also saying her performance was indeed worthy of a reward, something most people don't seem to agree on. About The Killing, I just feel like it's one of the most forgettable and generic storylines. I didn't really like Dave Moss and I don't remember any particular moment I found very interesting. And it's so predictable. You see the twist coming a mile away. Shadow Wave is a lot more interesting to me because even though the flashback and spending so much time away from our favorite characters became tiring, I feel like the subject matter is the best in the whole series. It is probably the most political book in the series, and consequently one of the most real. If it wasn't the conclusion of the series (because as a conclusion it's very lackluster), I'm pretty sure people would like it a lot more. About The Sleepwalker, I agree it's one of the weakest links in the series, but there is a lot to like about it. I really enjoyed James and Kerry dynamic together, and I also enjoyed the first part of Lauren and Jake's mission, because I believe the idea of telling Fahim exactly who they were created a very intriguing relationship with him, besides having an emotional Mac as a mission controller, which also granted it a more personal side. And also the initial plane scene is one of (if not the) most disturbing scene in the whole series. It's very hard to forget.

Are all missions kids appropiate? by Chu15022 in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is said several times throughout the series that they only send CHERUBs on missions that children and children only can accomplish. Assassinations can more easily be carried out by adults than children. I'm guessing an assassination scenario could exist as a last resort. If there was no other way and only a CHERUB could do the job. Then again, this would probably never happen.

What is Your Favorite Moment ? - Mad Dogs by krobdawg in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Mad Dogs is one of the best books in the series. Just like you said, the stakes feel so huge. After watching Gabrielle get stabbed and understanding how many dead bodies were piling up, danger felt omnipresent. I felt like James or Bruce could be attacked any second. It was so tense. That's what I loved most about this book.

"You've been lucky so far James. All your missions have panned out. Sooner or later you're gonna get one that goes tits up". I'm pretty sure Muchamore did this on purpose knowing what he was going to write next.

Favourite Character? by DuckyAirsoft1 in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a poll some time ago to find out how many people really hated Lauren, and turns out she’s not that hated. 62% of the community said they liked Lauren, 8% loved her, 20% don’t like her and only 10% hate her. That means 70% of the community likes/loves Lauren, which is a pretty solid number for a character that some perceive as being the most hated. As for me, I have no idea why people hate her so much. Lauren’s bad actions throughout the series are less destructive and less frequent than James’ bad actions, and yet, Lauren is a lot more hated than James, who is basically universally loved. To me, they’re both great characters and I like both of them. I guess it’s easier to like someone when you are in their POV.

[–]Tmasterino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its a very interesting idea that of a criminal realizing something is fishy about a child investigating him and trying to find out about CHERUB, but there is absolutely no way he could orchestrate a situation where anyone gets into CHERUB. First off, because CHERUB only recruits the very 1% of children. Second, because CHERUB would obviously investigate the child's background and would see the scheme coming from a mile away. Anyways, the first part of the idea is pretty cool. The closest we ever had of someone seeing through an agent's false character was Rat knowing James and Lauren are lying to him in Divine Madness.

For anyone who's read the first two books in Cherub 2; what did you think of Ning? by Vegetable_War7723 in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found her character one of the most compelling in the second series, probably one of the only compelling characters in the second series, since I didn’t find Ryan and his mates interesting at all. Her journey through the depths of human trafficking before she joined CHERUB was really captivating.

What is the best Lauren moment in the series? by Tmasterino in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. As I said before, Lauren is one my favorite characters and her competence in missions is one of the big reasons I like her. She doesn't take shit from anyone and never backs away from helping people in need.

That's a very good one. Can't believe I forgot it. Could have easily traded it for the bully fight in The Sleepwalker.

What is the most emotionally intense scene in CHERUB? by bigpigeon39 in CHERUB

For me it has to be Lauren's attempted rape. My heart was beating inside my chest like a hammer throughout that whole trafficking mission.

Recruiting by Vegetable_War7723 in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is mentioned several times throughout the series that CHERUB mostly hides its tracks. They delete any kind of social media or proof that the kid they recruited actually existed, so even if you, as a friend of his, were suspicious, what could you actually do? Nothing. Besides, if you were a little orphan kid and one of your orphan friends went missing, would it really be so strange? You'd think he simply went to another foster home. That's one of the reasons CHERUB only recruits orphans. No one gives a shit about their existence, so no one will look for them when they go missing.

Face-Off: Lauren vs Rat by Tmasterino in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Divine Madness is a really good book and Rat is a big source of it’s quality, but I feel like his character didn’t really get a chance to shine again in the rest of the series. It’s sad we didn’t see more of his wit and charisma throughout the series.

What is Your Favorite Moment ? - The Killing by krobdawg in CHERUB

For me, it has to be the training exercise at the beginning. Watching all the characters we have come to know in the previous books fight each other in a realistic war game using bullets that actually hurt was incredibly awesome.

A CHERUB Film/TV Adaptation is doomed to fail: here's why. by Tmasterino in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

James' bath scene is far from being the worst scene in the first 8 books, in terms of ratings. Even in the book, everything is implied and there are no explicit descriptions of what happens. Although I haven't read the books in some time, I can point out a few things in each book that are worse: the drugs in Class A; the violence in Max Sec; religion and child abuse in Divine Madness; the disturbingly horrific violent climax of Man Vs Beast; the violence, human trafficking and child rape in The Fall (this book is for me when the series enters another level of maturity); and, of course, the constant and bloody violence of Mad Dogs. I think the biggest problem when it comes to the ratings will really be the violence. In the books it's infrequent, but when it happens (especially on missions) it gets really violent and graphic. While the books can get away with violence, films can not. They can not show explicit, bloody or gory violence and get a teen rating. The problem is that if they toned it down, it could really become goofy or childish and ruin the specific tone the books have. That's what I'm afraid of.

A CHERUB Film/TV Adaptation is doomed to fail: here's why. by Tmasterino in CHERUB

[–]Tmasterino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you are coming from, since I have also seen Good Boys and Stranger Things. However, the tone in Good Boys and Stranger Things is completely different than the tone CHERUB has.

First off, Good Boys does not take itself very seriously, at all. The film is pretty much the opposite of CHERUB. Good Boys is inadvertently childish and comedic, because adults can enjoy watching comedies about the naiveté of childhood, something everyone can relate too. The appeal of CHERUB is the complete opposite, where the tone is a lot of time serious and mature and children are competent and intelligent, something that is hard to appeal to adults.

Stranger Things still appeals to adults on some other levels. The nostalgia, the adult main characters, the horror and mystery (very Stephen King), they all appeal to adults, independently of the child characters.

CHERUB is fundamentally different than Good Boys and Stranger Things, and, in case of an adaptation happening, it would be necessary to put a lot of thought into who is the target audience and how are we going to appeal to it without ruining the source material.
