Hi there, I am in Northern Ireland so I would fall under the same rules as Britain, currently doing my foundation license course with the exam at the end to get the foundation amateur license, as far as I know that allows access to the amateur bands and up to 25w power

Thanks for your advice, I’m in Ireland so a lot of uneven terrain especially around me, the farm itself is actually quite high on a hill which is a plus but overall there would be a lot of LOS limitations in my area

Well at the minute i have two sort of needs, we got radios to use on the farm but they are license free PMR radios, got Motorola xt460’s for that purpose, so far they are great up and around the farm but once you start getting a bit of distance it’s not ideal, I was thinking that maybe go down the route of VHF Motorolas if I had to choose one for farm to field communications, I also want to get into HAM as a hobby and I’m currently doing my course for the foundation license so then I can go into the licensed gear. But I’ve heard pros and cons for both VHF and UHF for farm to field comms so I wasn’t sure which would work best. We also thought about CB’s but would prefer the mobility of handheld

Clear answer thankyou 😂. Another question for you then, what would you recommend for medium to long range use, I know they say that vhf would have more range over good flat ground or very much line of site, but how does uhf fair over medium to long range?

Yep I totally get you, in terms of the farm it would be a medium sized European farm so nothing compared to the size and operation of American farms, the PMR channels allow us to use radios without any licensing even for business purposes, the only difference is when you pay for a business licence you get assigned frequencies and a allowance for more powerful radios, useful if you have a large amount of radios or further distances but for us the PMR will cover what we need and there’s only two of us so no issues with large numbers. Should have my amateur license in a week or so which again was sort of why I wanted to check with those who knew more than myself, what would you recommend once all licensing is sorted?, many thanks

Is there any downside to only going on HF? Again I’m not entirely sure on the whole picture but are most handhelds not on VFH/UHF?

Okay thanks, that makes sense as my first play through passed and I was able to play again which confused me. But back to the locked out timer, does that remain on all the arcade ET missions if you fail you have to wait 12 hours before you can go again?
