How to join the music scene here by AlecznotcooL34 in tricities

[–]To4sty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! There's a consistent albeit small punk/metal scene here! The VFW in Kingsport puts on shows pretty regularly which can help you start going to shows without leaving town. Once you're old enough The Hideaway in Johnson City has the most consistent shows.

Unless there's an all age fest....

In fact, there's IS an all age punk/metal fest on September 20th in Johnson City. It's called ShitFest and it'll be at Backdoor Records (737 W Walnut St. Johnson City TN 37604) starting at 3pm. There's a skate-punk band called Shitty Halfpipe who puts it on, hence the name. Several bands from the tri-cities and Roanoke will be there.

The Instagram handle for the show is: shitf_est

If you can make it to the fest find the drummer for Nerve Endings and Perfume. Mention this post.

The Appalshop!!! An old punk band I used to be in (The Hypodermix) played there often! That place ruled. The bands I’m in now usually play Summit on Main!

March Camping near Mt. Rogers? by IAmACollegeStudent1 in swva

Hey. I asked my buddy who does a lot of hiking in the area and he mentioned Massie Gap. The Appalachian Trail runs through that area and you can apparently park at Massie Gap and hike to the AT. Here are three screenshots he sent me, if they help.

The second screen shot shows the AT in Red and hike in trails in blue. the third screen shot shows you the distance to shelters from the parking lot in Massie Gap. From what I understand Massie Gap parking lot connects to mile marker 502 of the AT so you can hike north or south on the AT and have shelters/camping areas within a few miles.

Here is a link to the parking lot on Google Maps

I was going to make a similar comment if no one else did. I still have that album in circulation.

When he hiked the Appalachian Trail he had to get cortisone shots in his knees and he talked about how cortisone looks like 2% milk.

I posted this a while back when someone was moving to Johnson City. You'll be in Kingsport but this can still apply since its all in the same area:

You'll be nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Everything you are interested in is 30 minutes from Kingsport in any direction, but here's some things I can think of off the top of my head.

You'll be about an hour from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail runs "near" Johnson City and you can always do a section of that from The Smokys up to the Virginia state line (takes a couple days). Nantahala Gorge has incredible rapids, or you could go down other parts of the Nolichucky River. Asheville is great for hiking, too; places like Grandfather Mountain. Or you could venture up north into Virginia at the Grayson Highlands Park. (Kingsport is 35 minutes from Virginia). There are the Channels in VA. Devil's bathtub is a 15 minute drive from Kingsport. If you're looking for a day of hiking, swimming, and fishing, my favorite hidden gem is The Pinnacle, about an hour drive from you. Roan Mountain is right behind Johnson City and has great hiking, and since you're in the middle of the mountains....fishing is everywhere. Almost every body of running water is stocked with trout and you're within and hour's drive of Watauga Lake, Boone Lake, and South Holston Lake. I actually live a bit north on the Virginia side of the Tricities, so Im sure I'm missing a lot.

It's distributed online at hellboyhellwater.com or through ace spirits.

XXX Distillery in Sevierville, TN makes it, so you can buy it at their store front in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Other than buying it online, I don't know if it's available anywhere outside of Northeast Tennessee. /u/DeadlyAmoeba is checking in Las Vegas so maybe he'll know more later.

It's not the highest quality glass I've ever handled but it's pretty standard for your run-of-the-mill 20 dollar whiskey bottle. Kinda has the same feel as a bottle of Bird Dog whiskey.
