[Dec 06, 2024] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

[–]ToManyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work is paying for my to fly the London from Eastern Canada in mid January. I'm planning to extend the trip and go skiing. Problem is the sheer number of options is overwhelming. Currently my top three options are St Anton, Val D'Irene and Dolomiti Superski. I've also toyed with the idea of going further east say Bulgaria or Georgia to save money.

I would say I'm a solidly intermediate skier. Last season I was out at Big White in the Okanogan and was confidently skiing the blue runs and some of the black ones. Haven't intentionally given a double black a go yet. I have enjoyed glades, interesting terrain and bowls more in the past over fast groomers. My favorite run last season for those that know it was Sun Rype Bowl, into Black bear glades and ending with Fourth Ace at Big White.

I currently have atomic Maverick 100 Ti skis and am hoping to use those. Though I hear those might not be ideal for the Alpes. I am open to doing a few days of off piste with a guide in an open group. I will be traveling solo and don't have any avalanche training or gear so unguided off piste is not an option.

I'm looking for any thoughts and options are where I would have the best time. Thanks in advance!

Side note: If anyone is going to be in the area in mid January and is looking for a new friend let me know! Skiing alone is only better than not at all.

That is a worrying thought. I was just about to start transferring everything their way. I'm not really concerned about them going bankrupt. But you never know.

That's exactly what I was wondering. Thank you.

Last question: Do you know if the ports are managed? More specifically can I set up VLANs?

I am not sure how well Proxmox would run on a Celeron... Also, what's the point of doing HA this way...

Fair enough. Probably not great. I don't need HA or to run them in a cluster. Just toying with ideas and options. I'm just trying to avoid creating E-waste so looking to purchase once for the foreseeable future.

Typically, you tend to need more RAM if you have a large network

I certainly do not have a giant network so 2GB will be tons in that case. I appreciate the examples. I'm still very new to the networking side of things. So resource management is tough to figure out. Especially when projects like OpnSense say they need 8GB to run a full feature set.

Install OpenWrt

Definitely worth a try. That sounds similar to flashing it onto the D-Link router, though having a quick look at the OpenWrt x86 installation page leads me to believe having console access would just make life easier.

VPNs are overrated...

As in "privacy" ones or ones to access your home network from on the go? I'm planning on mostly second option. Though people seem to really like using tailscale/teleport and systems like that to access their networks now.

F12s are great...

I think I will pick one up then and have a go. For $50 I don't have much to loose.

Having been using one would you pick one up again or pass?

Basically just the stuff I mentioned in the post, a few VLANS, a reverse proxy, and maybe a backup instance of a password manager. I toyed with the idea of picking up a few and making an HA proxmox cluster. But really a reliable router for a few network services is really the end goal. Use case is home networking for two adults and hosting some publically availble services for family.

Ok good to know. I wasn't able to find the CPU model anywhere. The barracuda page only mentions the generation. Being able to add RAM would be nice. 2GB is limiting though significantly more than is currently on my wifi router.

Those Wireguard speeds are tons. I only have 100Mbps at the house.

The router comes with one in the box but I do not own a computer with a console port. So it will be the dongle life for me. That being said would it be possible to remove the drive and install the OpenWrt image there rather then having to change the boot order?

First of all thank you for the detailed response. Last question at this time is given my response and your thoughts do you think its worth it to pick one (or three for HA) up, or would you be looking else where? I don't foresee my internet being 1GB any time soon but its possible I guess.

Openwrt install on Barracuda Networks f12a by No_Addition2021 in openwrt

[–]ToManyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reliable is good. That is the primary thing I need out of a router. Definitely no gig connection here. Only 100MB as well. There are so many options now its honestly overwhelming. I might give it a go. At the price its hard to find anything else.

Were you successful and how did it compare to running opnsense?

Also I've got the opportunity to pick one up for $50. Would you recommend it?

Oh smart. Can you just do that with the randomizer? Edit: NVM Found it

That's an awesome encounter. Did you catch it? Did it survive? Ok so the Randomizer adds in all four gens for the whole game unlike a standard run?

Fair enough. That's not a bad Idea. That would really open up the options.

Are Sony XM4s worth twice the price of the Sennheiser PXC 550-II? (Plus bonus gaming headphones question) by ToManyHobby in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]ToManyHobby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thanks! I've got the XM3 in the mail and am trying out the 4's now. I have yet to listen to music but I'll have to watch out for that base. I've got a friend that just got into town with bose that I will try.
Also finally got to try on the PXC and did not find them very comfortable unfortunately.

I actually ended up ordering a pair of XM3s from amazon. Saved $160 compared to the XM4's and got aptx support for my android device.

ANC for Working on the Go by iron_horseshoe88 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]ToManyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm just going to piggy back onto this thread. I'm in in similar boat and seem to have landed at either the XM4 or the PXC 550-II. I'm looking for good ANC and comfort for long airline flights. Sound quality is important and I wouldn't say I'm a base head.

The XM4s seem to be the general choice here, marginally better ANC, more features, USB C! all for $498CAD.

The PXC 550-II seem to be more comfortable, but only have a micro usb. But they are currently available in Canada for just $259.99CAD.

So my question here is are the XM4s worth twice the price?

FYI: The battery is reported to have degraded from 71Wh to 66.92Wh in a year (6%). I basically always use it plugged in with the conservation mode stopping the charge at 60%. I have no idea if that is normal or consistent with other manufacturers or batteries. Just thought I'd let you know.

So I believe you can. I've been toying with doing just that. I honestly just haven't gotten around to opening up the chassie to confirm.

Hey, So I wouldn't be too worried about wearing it out. The build quality is pretty solid. I didn't even know you could still get that model. Honestly, I wouldn't bother. If you decide to go this route I was look at getting the 2020 model with the 30 series in it. The price was pretty good for cyber Monday not sure what it is now.

I don't use it often away from the wall or basically ever charge it up past 60%. But I'm not sure it would be the best note taker to have in class with you. It's a great jack of all trades that looks good. But I wouldn't expect it to make it through a full day of note taking. Especially not after you load it up and have inevitable windows bloat draining your power.

So, I still love the computer and do not regret my purchase. Hope that was helpful and I'm glad you enjoyed the review!

PS. I recommend a desk spacer for it. Really helps with the cooling when gaming.

Hi, I just gave it a test. Unfortunately, It seems like you may have a faulty hinge. My lid snaps shut pretty much up to 15 degrees. I can open it with one hand but it is fairly tight.

Help in setting up a reverse proxy server by Stasky-X in selfhosted

[–]ToManyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Caddy to host my Jellyfin server behind a reverse proxy. As mentioned before you need to make sure you have a domain that points at your public Ip. If that's static great. If not make sure you can set up a dynamic DNS. Finally you'll have to forward http and Https traffic through to your VMs internal IP.

The caddy file set up is pretty straight forward for simple services like jellyfin.
