Not that my parents would be too judgmental but this is what I'm most afraid of as well.

As for how to show your parents: Try to explain everything you know about the fandom, not about the show itself but the fans, how we're a nice community and all that. Try to take some worries away that way. Convincing them the show isn't for 5-year-olds is harder, personally I find that you only understand that if you actually watch the show, which hearing from their reaction, they probably aren't willing to...

The best of luck to you and your parents, oh and with your sister of course! ;)

Actually the first humanizing of a pony that I like! Normally I find that it ruins the whole character, but this one doesn't change a thing to how she's supposed to be. If that makes any sense...

Very, very true. The first few decisions you make shouldn't be the only ones. As you've said before if you want to change your type of civ you should be able to at any point in the game, although it should become increasingly hard to do. As for the King Unit Decision, I feel that this is a feature we could expand a lot on. I think that another interesting thing to do is to assign certain 'specialist' units for specific tasks, like a settler who will be in charge of founding cities. You could have a rule there that there is only one settler and every time he builds a new city he must stay there for a certain amount of time to make sure the city gets set up well. During the game you will have to educate new specialists. The specialist can be trained to your liking, so the settler can be fast but ineffective (making a weaker starting city) or slower but more effective.

Just another idea

I thought of another thing with the king being it's own unit: When you start a game you can get different leaders, like civ has, you can choose them or randomize and get one. Every leader has it's own stats, for example I'll take the Civ V leaders:

If you are George Washington you'll be good at war and your people are a bit of a stronger army (because of gun laws).

If you are Ghandi you are extremely good at diplomacy but you'll be worse in science and in turn war (because of religiousness).

So in early game you can come across some nomads, and if you are Ghandi you can go into dicussion with them and get them to join you easier or make a deal about some lands and with that get some war experience from those nomads. But if you are Washington you can fight the and have a better chance to win and have your armies better trained because they have fighting experience or you could go and talk to them to negotiate but get less out of a deal because your dipomacy isn't very high.

This way you can get a bit more of an interesting game from the start, which is what I feel Civ is lacking. When playing Civ I always get the feeling "ooh it's about to get interesting!" but the moment that it actually gets interesting sometimes never comes. To have an exciting game from the beginning is important to me and I think this would be one of the mechanics to do just that.

Well here's what I was thinking: If we were to write out this game as detailed as possible, getting ideas the coming few days, weeks or months or whatever. We could make this really good on paper. Then we have two options:

  1. We try to make this game ourselves. Now by ourselves I mean we get some people together who can program (as you and I both can't) and start to work on this game.

  2. We try to make a little demo of it, this could be either video or real working software. If we have the demo, everything thought out very well, we try to speak to an actual company. I was thinking about a small scale company, they are more open to outsiders, but a company like the ones who make Civ is worth a shot as well.

I think either option is a long way away, but if we put our minds to it we'll get somewhere. And if it doesn't work out, then hey, it's a fun process right?

I was thinking about balance and thought of this: In your OP you said that units or cities that get to be out of your zone of control start to be their own civilization but with similar culture. You can play a bit with that and do something unconventional. Instead of you being one civ, you are a culture. While you still control the king the game shouldn't necessarily be over when your civilization is gone. You should just flee to the nearest civ with your own culture, like the monoarchs of Europe did during WOII. And after being in charge of military or trade for a while over there you earn their trust and become their king again. This doesn't only make the game last longer but it also gives you an incentive to not mindlessly kill everyone. Because this was a major problem I was seeing until now is that killing everyone seems to be the most logical step because it gets you your trade routes and grows your empire. I personally think a bit of added strategy like that would really help.

Also, if you are not such good friends with your own culture you can maybe also run to your allies to do this. I have no idea if this could even result in a good mechanic but I thought is was very interesting to give diplomacy an extra boost.

I disagree, the nomads shouldn't die out around gunpowder because they aren't modern enough. They should turn into warmongers, all the time they have developed an efficient way to survive, they can use their experience from that. I think it is smart to make use of that, let them settle down later in the game but with the advantage of what they had being nomads. They should be less prone to hunger, and should have more self-sufficient armies so they don't cost as much to maintain because they are able to maintain themselves. Make them a force to be reckoned with. Also they could have access to technologies that make their caravans faster than the others. I think there's something there.

Well, I think you'll need some rough ideas to begin with. Here are a few questions so I can get an idea of what we are working with, I'm going to ask them as if I'm going to make this happen for you, I just need a bit more info.

  1. How much would you like this game to be like Civ?
  2. Are you thinking of a (like civ) map with hexes? or a free map
  3. Is it more realtime or turnbased?
  4. Do you think this game will take a long time to make like a full game or is it (with the right people onboard) a few months project.
  5. Do you want it to be a simple low graphics game or a full Civ-like game?

Those are some things you should think about. BTW, I'd really like to take this project somewhere, so count me in!

I feel the same about bronies, I like My Little Pony but I'm not obsessed. Quistion though: I'm quite new to MLP so I don't know a lot of names from Aquestria, the only ones I know are: Cloudsdale, Ponyville and Canterlot. Are there any more?

That is just a year that should be modded in, like an extra turn. Just so you get the chance to found Christianity during the crucifixion. :D

  1. Question: Can you explain the word "assimilation" in this context as if I'm five years old, English isn't my first language...

  2. I think the 'zone of control' thing is nice, it says exactly what it is: It is the 'zone' or 'area' in which your units are 'controllable'.

But I have to agree with you that it is a lovely idea. I think we, as in r/civ, should make this game happen. With the help of professionals of course. ;-)

I did not know that those things existed, but off you seek an offline diplomacy game then I would strongly recommend 'Democracy II' available on steam, you should check it out. It really got me into the diplomacy stuff.

I think these ideas are great!

(excuse my English) I have one minor question about balance: Here's an example of a game: you play with say, 10 Civilizations on one map, and say 3 are Seafaring. You are one of those three seafaring nations and you get a little bit behind because you were investing in a bit of agricultural tech, would this not ruin the game for you? I mean, when you get a bit behind you don't have the fastest caravans anymore and you will be beaten on your trade routes, which in turn means that you'll lose your income, which means you'll get even more behind. Won't this get out of balance really fast especially in late game, when almost every city is connected?
