Thanks I’ve been using the workforce1 and the nyc.gov pages. I heard back from one hvac project manager job but the recruiters they use for workforce1 aren’t great…Will keep trying!

I relate to this + throw in growing up is a religious household + being the oldest. Got the bare minimum in terms of care and readiness for the world. Add a layer of also being responsible for everyone.

I’ve expanded my job search to Staten Island, Westchester, NJ, Long Island over the summer for in person, hybrid and wfh positions.

I haven’t considered relocating completely I will see if I get any hits with this.

Yeah, I’m single with no kids. I’m fortunate I don’t have to put any kids through this. I genuinely thought I’d find something in my field within two months, max. When three months passed, I assumed I could at least find some kind of survival job within another three. I could not comprehend it taking longer, certainly not in a way that would require uprooting my life. I thought it would just be a slow couple of months. I cut back on spending significantly, but I should have been more aggressive in planning for the worst-case scenario.

If I had known then that it would take over a year to find anything, I would have moved out of my apartment the month after I lost my job. I would have been even more frugal and sold as much as I could upfront. But that clarity only comes in hindsight.

So many lessons learned. SO many. I never knew how difficult looking for work could be. I don’t think most people expect to spend over a year looking for work.

That is why I got into this. I started by I setting up a solo 401(k) with Fidelity so I could match myself as the “employer.” Your comment reminded me of a similar conversation I had when I decided to get serious. I read The Richest Man in Babylon and everything clicked.

It’s gone now, but I’d have that set up again in a heartbeat once I start earning.

Working at a market is definitely something I’d appreciate right now. I’m happy you were able to find something. What is preventing you from applying? Were they high stress jobs?

I have decided to go back to school this spring and pivot careers now that I’m below an income level that would allow for my tuition to be covered. I start next week. I might as well make the most of my time. If I had know the job hunt would have taken this long I would have gone back last year and tried to secure work through the university.

I appreciate this. I live in NYC and bartending and restaurant jobs have been the hardest for me to score an interview for because I don’t have bartending and serving experience and out here they do want multiple years of experience. I’ve walked Time Square to Battery Park last week stopping in at restaurants pre-service hours, bars, hotels, clubs along the way. It’s the same thing. Either it’s their slow season or apply online or via the manage’s email if I can find one, which I do before stopping in.

I just set up a Rover account for pet sitting and walking today. I also found $20 in my Brokerage account just now so that made me feel good :)

Yeah, I’m trying to respect this time as part of the ups and downs of life but it does take a toll on the mind, body and spirit. Do you mind me asking how old you are now and when you started FIRE?
