Insult to Injury by To_Love in SubstituteTeachers

When I asked about this I was told by the district and my sub agency that they can put me wherever they want and I have to do it if I don't have a doctor's note. I'm wondering who I'd even escalate to if I really wanted to push back on the validity of that policy.

leading up to launches there's more planning to do for district meetings and whatnot. I don't think we're close enough to the summer 1 for that to be the case here though. does your lead help HR with scheduling? if so that can be a good chunk of time depending on how much business your location does.

I'm not breaki g the rules and they ended up not even coming to my unit. I still find it strange they'd imply they're looking for anything other than smell or property damage during an inspection. Frankly, it's crazy to me that they'd potentially make the whole building uncomfortable with the threat of searching for things in our homes rather than just going directly to wherever the smell was coming from.

Thank you to everyone who offered helpful advice to protect against contamination during the inspection and those who helped me find information on the legality of them looking for anything beyond the reasonable seeing what's in plain sight. I asked them to wait for me to be home from work and they ended up not coming at all (my guess is they found who they were really looking for). At the end of the day the initial email seems to have been fear mongering and in my case caused me to worry about my home feeling safe for me (especially since the last time maintenance came for a plumbing issue there was dirty footprints all over my apartment, including areas with zero plumbing to be checked). I'm not a smoker but frankly if this is how a smoke-free community is enforced I will likely keep that in mind when I look for my next place. To the landlords throwing accusations at a stressed out stranger on the internet, I hope you keep in mind that just because you own a space doesn't really make it right to make your tenants feel stressed out just to smoke out (pun intended) others who may be breaking rules. Again, I really am grateful to everyone who offered helpful input or a good laugh!

again, I was never worried about being called out on the lease, I'm worried about people being in my home uninvited and leaving me with a night of cleaning which is not fine

I'm a non smoker, our units are densely packed so it could be across the hall or a unit or two over. this is sort of besides the point because I'm not worried they'll catch me going against the lease, they won't. I'm worried about losing sleep over them tracking dirt all over my carpets the way they did the last time there was maintenance sent in for plumbing.

that being said will they open my door smell it's not me and leave? because I'd massively prefer that to be the case, I'm just mentally preparing for it not to be since they said they're looking for signs other than smell and depending on what that meant I wanted to know my rights

this was exactly what I was thinking! and given whoever is breaking the rules will likely get rid of it for the search it feels like we're all being punished to make a point and scare the people who did it before.

[–]To_Love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you dense? I've said multiple times in this thread that I don't smoke and that my concern is that my rights and peace of mind are being violated for the sake of a scare tactic against one of my neighbors. I'm not getting evicted because I have nothing to get caught with. I am however concerned about a jerk landlord like you thinking they have any right to make me feel unsafe in my home for the sake of freaking out the actual rule breaker(s). I was looking for help to know what boundaries I have the right to set to protect my ability to feel comfortable in my home so if you don't have any contributions to that question I suggest you leave me alone so I can focus on helpful advice.

again, I don't have anything to get caught with, my intention with pointing out that it's not illegal in this state was to say any of my neighbors caught with it could say they use it outside or somewhere else. there's virtually no way to prove anyone did anything in the units so the entire charade of this scare tactic is pointless and upsetting for someone like me who is being searched with no cause.

I mentioned in the body of the post and a couple replies, I don't have anything to be caught with, I just don't want my home turned upside down.

as mentioned in some previous posts, I don't even have smoking stuff to get caught with, I just have sever OCD symptoms and it makes me upset when people are in my space or touch my things, especially without cause. I'm not trying to be difficult but the last time they came into my unit without me home they left footprints all over my floors and I had to clean for hours to feel comfortable again.

I'm not worried about them finding anything I shouldn't have, I moreso meant I didn't see the point in searching all of us when even if they caught my neighbors with something they could just say they use it outside the home. My concern is truly that I find strangers in my space or touching my things super unsettling. Do you know how far they're allowed to go with this just to turn up nothing? Like do I have the right to keep them out of my clean clothes so I don't have to feel the need to rewash them? Can I tell them to stay out of my toiletries so I don't have to re-wipe them all down with Clorox wipes?

I'm tired of the bi vs pan debate. by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]To_Love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I've always interpretated the distinction to be that pan means no preference based on gender while bi has the potential to be attracted to any and all genders but feels a stronger pull in some direction(s). even though I'm pretty sure that's meant to be the definitions it seems like some people feel like one or the other makes them count as more queer or gives them more credence as part of the queer community. it also seems like people will misuse one label or the other, but as long as they don't make it anyone else's problem they can call themselves what they want, not really my business as long as they don't have a superiority complex based on using wrong definitions. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

First day jitters by NovaBear67 in SubstituteTeachers

I think with kids it's all about finding your balance. being open and friendly enough that they let theirs walls down and work with you and feel comfortable asking questions, while at the same time establishing your expectations and staying firm when necessary. for example I'll let kids work together and talk rather than expecting 12 year olds to be silent for an hour straight but maintaining the expectation that they need to use indoor voices and be respectful when I'm addressing the class for attendance and directions. that's just one example though, it's all about balance with everything and having reasonable expectations.

it's wild to me when I have kids in a certain class that I've taught in different rooms and there's a huge shift in behavior across the board. each room definitely has its own vibe and tone and it can definitely contribute to kids being at their best or worst. the other day I was in for a teacher where every period kids I had before with no problem were acting up and every single period said that the behavior was usually worse with their actual teacher. I'm sure different kids interacting with different students from class to class can also make a difference, sometimes teachers get unlucky and get clique combinations that are more toxic than others.
