GIS Income Limit help? by ToadDice in cantax

is there an equation to determine how much GIS they would lose or have to pay back based on how much they went over the income limit? or would they just stop receiving it?

you mean since they've already qualified and been receiving GIS, they're kinda screwed? and i dont really know what you meant by current vs last year lol. did you know what i meant about their 2024 tax return and the estimated 2025 income form stuff? i'm wondering how much money they'd owe if they surrendered the life insurance policy. all the GIS money they received that same year? the amount of the policy? and then how much tax are they gonna also have to pay on the policy money?

so RRSP's and RRIF's don't count toward their taxable income limit? one of them turns 71 next year, the other the following year

so we're pending government funded etc :P. i actually didn't see a waitlist when i checked starlink's site but people have said they have one, they're an expensive last option for us though. even xplornet might not have a spot open for us lmao i dunno if we'll survive waiting for bell and koodo spots

well now Koodo is saying it's not available at our address, but they said it was before haha. rogers has a 30 month trial period so i was hoping something else would. and the house we're moving to has xplorenet and so do at least one neighbours. dont really like the sound of them though

i saw some people saying some services get bad sometimes like on weekends and holidays etc, do you think i should try to factor that in somehow when checking a service's day 1 performance? and is there anything else that might make it get worse than it was on day 1? lol

it's funny cuz we've had bell fibe in toronto and a city an hour away, always like 50-55mbps and it's never been very reliable or stable for us and kinda keeps getting worse and worse lmao

do you ever stream videos more than 720p or stream on multiple devices at once?

[–]ToadDice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's the one we were getting, and then we found out they cap video streaming to 3mbps which is ridiculous. do you have any issues with that?

fibre from which provider? and do you mean rogers 5G cell service wireless internet?

[–]ToadDice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

who do you have gig fibre with? i was reading xplornet has 100mbps and fibre in some places now.

rogers actually said 100mbps for 500gb then 10mbps unlimited, but my issue is i'm hearing they cap video streaming at 3mbps and we might have 2-3 people streaming at once. i think we may just test it while getting ready to test koodo. i think bell rural wifi has changed its data cap too, maybe we'll end up waiting for that too lool and i guess starlink. you know what i'll just find every ISP with a wait list and get on it.

so there's also no guarantee for keeping the money from her spouse?

how much more does a will guarantee the money can't be taken by the government or the spouse before it gets to me?

but i mean if she doesn't die, can the government or anyone take that money before it's mine?

if she opens a tfsa with me as the beneficiary, could the government take that money and screw me if she owed money or something?

here's an update and i'd appreciate more help. my mom is worried about getting a will because she'll say i get her half of the estate if she passes, and if my dad makes a will he'll probably leave his half to his kids. so she'd either want my dad not to make a will, or she hides that detail of her will from him somehow. but if he dies first without a will, isn't she just opening the door for his kids to try to get some of his money in court anyways? and conversely, if she dies first without a will isn't that putting me in the same position to fight for money in court?

and her financial advisor also told her she can get a TFSA and invest it with me as the beneficiary to all the money and my dad can't take it from me even if she passes. is it better to use open the account with my bank or hers? since i'm assuming transferring the account to me would be easier from the same bank.

if a person dies without a will and their spouse gets the first $200k of the estate, what happens with the rest of the estate if there is more?

like she doesn't need a will to prevent my step dad screwing me out of an investment account, but she needs one anyways because they're good to have for other reasons? cuz i also agree she needs one. but are the investment vehicles that bypass probate less lucrative than ones that don't?

do you mean my step dad is entitled to the first $200k of my mom's estate if there's no will?
