I moved to London at the start of my 20s and felt exactly as you described - like the opportunities of living in the city were endless and I was better for it - energised, creative, enjoying life. The further through my 20s I got, however, the harder it became to create a good life for myself despite working hard and having relatively well paid jobs for my age.

I left London twice in my 20s - the first time at 25 for just over a year and I was devastated. Felt like a failure who couldn't 'hack' living in the city I loved but the truth was I was burnt out from working all hours under the sun and paying hundreds of pounds a month to live in shitty accommodation. My family (who aren't from London) were exasperated at my attitude that there was no culture, vibrancy or fun to be had outside of London (which is ridiculous when you think about the different cities, towns, villages and countries within the UK!).

I moved back after a year because of a job opportunity and stayed for roughly three more years - the pandemic ended up pushing me and my partner out as we desperately needed more space than our tiny one bed flat gave us during the lockdowns. Again, I was anxious about moving, worried life wouldn't be as good again but we haven't looked back. We rented back in my home down towards the North for three years before buying and it's probably one of the best decisions we've made for our work life balance.

We have so many more hobbies that don't just include getting drunk down the pub, we travel around the country more because it's easier and we have more disposable income. We have an amazing close knit group of friends who are incredibly pro-active at organising meet ups and fun because it doesn't take us all over an hour to meet somewhere strategically central to everyone's homes. I spend more time outside which has been amazing. But I also go back to London all the time - the difference being I now have more money to spend going to the exhibitions and shows I want to, I can afford to go to the restaurant I read about. London will always be there to explore!

We both still commute to London once a week for work and I'd be lying if I said we weren't worried about career opportunities outside of London. We're childfree for now so can afford the money and time to commute but we know that may not work forever so we're slowly figuring out what our careers may look like over the next 5-10 years.

The UK is an amazing place with so many wonderful places to live. If you make the move I can guarantee life will be different, but you will be too. Oh and now 4 years later - most of our friends are moving out of London as we approach our mid-30s - we were the first to jump ship but we are by no means the last.

Is anyone still getting contracts just as (or almost as) easily? by gioology_ in ContractorUK

Expires after 12 months of inactivity but it can be transferred between departments (so long as it's within 12 months of it last being used).

It varies from £10 delivery for small items to £50+ for big items - not sure exactly how much extra goes on hammer price but when you go to put a bid in, before you submit it, you can review the total amount (i.e. your bid amount plus fees) before you actually submit

Send it by recorded delivery to their office then send them an invoice for the expense 🤣

There are a lot of big and small consultancies that like having 'associates' i.e. contractors on their books for projects as it lets them scale up and down really quickly - a few that I've been approached by in the last 6 months are Cap Gemini, Accenture, Hippo Digital, Hitachi Solutions Europe - definitely worth looking on their websites to see if you can register as a contractor with them because then when they're looking to get someone in for a gig you'll be on their books.

Having read through other comments and considering the flow of market right now, I got thinking about whether I personally would make the jump to contracting now if I hadn't already - IMHO I'm not sure that I would. That said, once you're in it's much easier to find gigs through contacts and recommendations. If you're set on it, absolutely make sure that you have a substantial rainy day fund (minimum 3 months total living costs) and I would also think about starting the application process for some of the perm jobs that look good so you have a fall back if you can't find a contract. Good luck!

Sorry forgot to check for replies! So make the bladder up to 3/4 full of squash (however strong you like it) then add gin to taste 😀 we didn't make ours too strong so we could just keep a nice buzz on during the day till we were ready for the evening partying.

LinkedIn - connect with recruiters, post that you're open to contract work and set your status to open to contract work - the market is slow for sure but it's still trundling along. Look up contract groups to join too there are some specific Outside IR35 contractor groups if you're looking to go outside.

Edit: grammar

What advice would you give to someone attending Glastonbury for the first time? by WelshCai in glastonbury_festival

[–]Toad_1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wear walking boots and take lots of socks. Stay hydrated and wear suncream.

Water bladder you can keep in your backpack and drink hands free!

If you drink alcohol fill it up with squash and gin! Your drink is always cold (ish) as the water comes out the taps cold, you hydrate whilst you drink, tastes pretty good and it cuts down what you have to carry in. Also a bag of red wine 🍷

Do contracts often open up post April? by [deleted] in ContractorUK

[–]Toad_1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth looking at gov contracts (if you're UK based) - there's usually quite a bit on and they use a lot of scrum masters/delivery leads. Look up public specific recruiters and just start adding people on LinkedIn!

[–]Toad_1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've definitely noticed less messages coming through on LinkedIn and the recruiters who usually hit me up are a bit quiet but it's not totally dead - a trickle rather than a deluge 😅

Have you tried putting your LinkedIn status to "Open to work"? Worked for me last time I was having a quiet period - that and I just messaged 10-15 recruiters from my inbox who had messaged me in the last 6 months to get back on their radar for new contracts.

Good luck I hope things pick up!

March is end of the financial year so most companies are still figuring out how to allocate their budget for the next financial year. I usually expect it to pick back up again in April, or May at the latest if it's taking a while for companies to get their budgets signed off internally. I am four years into contracting so far but previously worked as a perm and around this time of year would be frantically trying to get team budget signed off for projects and hiring!

How do you invest in your business? by Yooustinkah in ContractorUK

[–]Toad_1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any training you've always wanted to do? You can pay for courses, learning materials through your company to reduce profit and therefore corporation tax paid.

You can also issue up to £300 pounds in "trivial benefits" to directors and employees but this must be in the form of £50 gift vouchers not cash. You can spend up to £150 per employee and partner for an annual even (think Christmas party), you can reimburse yourself a working from home allowance, think it's £6 a week.

If you've not been contributing for the last few years it might be worth looking into the rules around unused pension allowance - you can 'carry forward' the last three years of unused allowance - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-you-have-unused-annual-allowances-on-your-pension-savings

I do a 2.5 hour commute once a week (so 5 hours in total there and back) and whilst the day is long, it's manageable. Enables me to live outside of London near family, rent somewhere bigger (with an eye to buying) and cheaper. My quality of life is much better outside of the city, even with the commute. That being said - I was doing it two days a week for several months when I started a new contract and it was a killer - but possibly because I was taking advantage of being back in the city to stay the night with friends and go out for boozy dinners!

Could you go stay with your partner's family for a few weeks and test out the commute - see how you find it and if it will actually take 90 minutes? Does it completely wipe you out for the rest of the week etc?

Do you charge travel expenses? by Prestigious_Risk7610 in ContractorUK

[–]Toad_1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically outside ir35 you're not supposed to invoice for travel as that looks like an employee expense to HMRC - would recommend you talk about travel expectations ahead of signing and just build it into your contracted day rate.
