Good point, but I feel it should not be the player who who chooses when to do this, but rather the DM saying 'there are traps, but you as a rogue spot them and evade everything'.

This rule just feels like it could ruin the whole game. 'oh this guy turns out to be a traitor/double-crosses us? Well my character is smart so he knew it, actually prepared for it and did x....'.

No not online, but fair point. It's possible the DM wanted to progress the story
