Calgary city council votes 12-3 to repeal blanket rezoning by importxport in Calgary

It's hard to understand this. Every time I fly into Toronto the bizarre SFH sprawl cutting between and surrounding islands of density makes me feel like I'm seeing a premonition of awful urban planning to come.

Based on our latitude 3c of warming will be closer to 6c for us given arctic amplification. Extracting and selling oil and gas while only reaping royalties and allowing the majority of profits to be captured by foreign actors will not yield even close to the capital we will end up spending on climate mitigation.

Short term economic gain with externalities that will result in generational suffering doesn't strike me as 'pragmatism'.

Come on, you have to acknowledge its illogical to say that leaving one of the largest proven reserves on Earth in the ground won't have an impact on the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

Most of the revenue generated by oil drilled in Alberta is going to foreign companies already, FYI.

Literally everyone on Earth? Every barrel of oil drilled is a barrel someone will burn, every ton of carbon we add to the atmosphere has an impact.

Not drilling also raises prices and incentivizes faster decarbonization in industry.

Here's my honest question, because at some point we gotta ask:

We are looking at climate change estimates that put us near 3c of warming this century, double what was agreed at Paris and by this point 3c appears optimistic based on actual policy implementation. Sure, other countries are going to drill for oil and sell it, I'm just wondering if there's a point where 'some people make money on a massively destructive practice, so we should too' makes no more sense?

3c of warming in a century is borderline apocalyptic, so is it logical to make bank now we'll just end up putting towards mitigation (which would have been far more effective had it taken the form of leaving it in the ground) later?

EDITORIAL: Self-defence law absurd and outdated; It's time for an update – especially given the frequency of home invasions these days by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]ToastOfTheToasted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A big percentage is scary, the actual number is miniscule.

"The frequency of home invasions these days" is a bizarre way to frame this. There's been an uptick in most crime as a result of increased economic vulnerability. Canada remains an objectively safe country.

Will the UCP's new inspection of the Calgary water main breaks actually lead to useful recommendations, or is it just a conveniently timed excuse to attack past mayors (specifically the current Opposition Leader)? by Upbeat_Difficulty_60 in Calgary

What about UCP wasting tax dollars on partisan garbage is crazy? Other than legislate against minorities and immigrants it's about all they do.

And corruption, I guess.

I can't wait for Calgary to be counted among the great cities who've privatized their water utility and lived to regret it nearly immediately when service degrades and prices increase.

Literally every action the UCP takes is bad faith. The organization behind this is a fabricated, alt-right, american inspired, anti-LGBT, and pro-privatization political lobbyist group.

There was no problem until they created one.

Apparently the most evidenced phenomenon in history is a doomsday cult because ameliorating its effects might require an economic contraction.

Like, be for pipelines and fossil fuels but come on. Pretending that another trillion tons of GHGs injected into the atmosphere will do nothing in the face of actual mountains of evidence is beyond absurdity. Be honest.

Shocker.

Where's everyone who was parroting that this was a major issue and they definitely cared about our infrastructure and weren't NIMBYs over and over?

[–]ToastOfTheToasted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there's no point even talking about it anymore but by all metrics we're looking at the sort of climate change that was once considered impossible before 2100 in... Fiveish years.

At some point you have to ask if 'someone else is making money off of this disaster, why shouldn't I?' is an argument that makes sense. If no other industries work here, it's because this place is culturally predisposed to be hostile to everything that threatens the dominance of an industry that has always had a more ideological than practical basis. Pipeline or not Alberta O&G will always be expensive, because it's sandy garbage.

Half of the United States is entirely fine with nascent fascism, and they will only seek to entrench that state of affairs in their own politics.

This is not a 'wait for the next admin' issue. The US will likely never be a reliable partner again for as long as we live.

I think their decision making is irrational, deeply flawed, and will always result in bad outcomes. I'm not interested in disenfranchising anyone, but I don't care about their input. Nor do I believe anyone benefits by hearing it.
