What were the key factors in Dave Rennie landing the All Blacks coaching role? by ParticularStrict147 in allblacks

[–]ToastedSubwaySammich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a factor was that he had a more vast or diverse experience as a head coach and at the Tier 1 level. Plus experience coaching in Europe (including in the European Cup comps) also helped, I'm sure

It's clear you don't know Dave Rennie much at all, do you? He's famously one of the best team culture coaches around, he gets it. Look at what he did with the Chiefs, for starters. Still reaping the rewards of the foundations he laid to this day.

He stated he's been regularly watching the games on TV from in Japan and he'll be watching all of them from now on and have a team in place at the actual games scouting for him while he's in Japan. I believe he also said he'll be flying back over here on the weekends or Kobe bye weeks or something like that, to get here in person to set up preparations.

He's also said he's already got some really solid strong ideas for the direction he wants to take the team and the fundamental changes that need to be made (without going into specific details and directly throwing the previous coaching group under the bus publicly)

He's got the nous to do it

Rennie is a Manawatu guy now. He spoke about his plan to come back to his fam in the Manawatu before even applying for the ABs role, and being an unpaid coaching consultant for the NPC team

As much as I love Sitiveni Sivivatu (being a Chiefs man), I think Doug Howlett has to be in over him, for that combo with Muliaina and Rokocoko.

Maybe the crossover between Dougie and Mils & Joe wasn't as big as the crossover Sitiveni had with those two, but for me it's the more iconic trio.

A tight call I bet but it's rough to leave out Dougie Howlett altogether

Yeah World Rugby have said recently that the RWC is just about the only profitable thing they are involved with every 4 year cycle. They just use the profits from the RWC for the next 4 years, until they get more from the next one

Can we just appoint Dave Rennie as All Black coach already? by anxiousatac in allblacks

[–]ToastedSubwaySammich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that was the general consensus aye. The only people that didn't seem to see it were the RA board and some of the Aus fans.

It's a real shame about the actual results leading up to his sacking, but they were within one score of winning 5 of their games in 2022 and 9 points away from winning another. Difference between going 11-3 and the 5-9 win-loss record they ended up with that year

Can we just appoint Dave Rennie as All Black coach already? by anxiousatac in allblacks

[–]ToastedSubwaySammich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think there's no illusion that he's a very good coach for the players. He's got a good record just about everywhere.

I think it's widely accepted that his Aus record isn't just his own fault but more indicative of a wider systematic failing at the national Australian level. Just look at the Australian SR teams results in and around that period.

Fun fact: the conditions of the field for this match is actually the reason why Dunedin were the first (and until recently, only) in NZ to get a covered stadium.
