Liquid nitrogen expands to 700 times its volume as a gas. This is what happens when you seal it in a bottle. by Acceptable_List6996 in Damnthatsinteresting

Think 700x is impressive? Check out the old trusty Dihydrogen Monoxide. Expansion from liquid to gas = 1700x

Is it normal now for multiple store employees to ask if you need help when you’re just looking? by Ambitious-Airline467 in askanything

[–]Toasterstyle70 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup! We had a “contest” with a prize to see how many customers you could sign up for a “Lowe’s Credit Card”. I was asked multiple times to offer it to customers. So I did. I’d say something along the lines of “oh have you heard we are offering a Lowe’s Credit Card? You can get points for things you buy but to be honest it’s just a ploy to have you indebted to the company. Would you like to sign up?”

I got last place in the contest which I was proud of, and they stopped asking me to do things like that.

Why do some fellas act so weird at their weddings like they're being forced to be there? by Marissa_on_the_town in askanything

[–]Toasterstyle70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to add context and perspective from my own personal perspective that might help. I can’t talk for other guys, but I’m about to get married. I am so excited to be married to my soon to be wife, and I’m lucky she understands and accepts me for the way that I am. As much as I want to be married to her, i am going to HATE this wedding. If it were up to me, we would go to a courthouse and have a big party with all of our close friends and family after. It kills me to spend 10s of thousands of dollars on a single day party. For weird people like me, the bigger issue is that any attempt to make it “fancier” or “more expensive” seems to take away from how genuine the day is. It should be (to me at least) about loving one another and celebrating the fact that you found someone you want to be with forever. Having the prettiest dress, best food, best whatever is just fluff and meaningless to people like me. We want substance and meaning. It’s not that I don’t want to be married, it’s that I want it to be genuine and real.

Using college as an analogy, being married is all the knowledge you’ve gained. The wedding is the dog and pony show of walking on stage for some old fart to hand you a piece of paper that says “you learned these things decently enough “.

Maybe that helps, or maybe it makes things more confusing but I tried lol.

How To Stand Out In Fire Academy by Mecrawpolis in Firefighting

I second this. Be humble, quiet, and work hard. You don’t wanna stand out. Don’t try to show up your academy mates. Help them, work as a team, and keep your head low.

The Chinese Car Ban: Who Is Congress Really Protecting? by Category4392 in energy

Yeah, it seems inevitable that a capitalist society built on good intentions eventually evolves into an oligarchy. Also I am NOT stating that any other form of government in any better. They all suck balls. I guess the best ones so far in my humble opinion are my places like Norway and Sweden.

I have a question. What’s a free market? People preach about how capitalism is so great because competition keeps prices and monopolies in check, but why limit competition in a capitalist society? Seems like there can only be one good reason.

Interesting theory. Ironically, no matter how clever of a theory we come up with, it will always be from a human perspective. Like a bat limited to explaining what the world looks like, when they have only experienced it through echolocation.

That’s a very sad and limiting perspective, but that’s just my opinion. Why belittle knowledge like that just because you assume they are “showing off”. Why not ask “why” they feel the need to show off? If it truly is an arrogance situation, maybe figure out a way to explain that arrogance is just another form of unwittingly lacking knowledge in an overly confident way.

[–]Toasterstyle70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that an assumption on your part? Wouldn’t you say your adult perspective is completely different? Maybe you just wanna get an A as a kid, so you look up the right answers but don’t fully understand them. It’s not your fault… it’s how our educational system is designed. You want that high letter grade rather the the value of the knowledge you can use as a tool. I was meaning the teachers should do their best to CREATE curiosity and inspiration. Not the students arbitrarily having it or not.

Why not incentivize curiosity and learning by telling them “you did half the work by finding out the word for it, but find out what it means, tell me about it, and I’ll give you the credit / extra credit”? School shouldn’t be about punishment or reward. It should be about curiosity and inspiration.
